I have one question. About two weeks ago I brought pair of zebra finches, but they didn't want to mate. I realized that maybe they are from the same nest,I mean,I think they are brother and sister. Than, yesterday I brought one female more. Now the male is very annoying and he is chasing her all day,but she is running away from him. Should I be worried?
Sounds like he is not happy but concerned... just read also that the hen died. I think this little guy knew she was on the way out, trying to exhort her to be strong.
@angelialvares The little female bird died on natural causes in the past week and Alex stopped singing, hes sleeping half the day the rousing his feathers the other half
He's an absolute beauty! He as certainly impressed all ten of my finches. They all came running to thedge of the cage to see who was singing. My oldest male zebbie called Apache couldnt stop singing when he heard Alex!
Alex is almost eight years old, far older than any finch we had in captivity. He has not been very active, choosing instead to snooze in his little basket for several hours of morning and most of the afternoon.
Mine just turned 10 yo in July. He doesn't fly anymore and mostly sleeps the whole day, but still sings a tune or two when he's happy. That makes him a true Birdhuselah, doesn't it?
@901chloe He is a boy, this is distinguished by the hazel cheeks, the zebra colored breast feathers, and the brown/white streaks on his side. Females have very little decorations of this sort. Alex was born with full plumage resembling that of purebreds, save the white primary feathers and a little Y on his forehead. Cheerio :)
What a beautiful looking boy you have there. I have two girls and a boy... Unfortunately, they are all in separate cages, but I always love to hear the males sing.
ohh bless!! He's pied, look at the white tuft on his head!! He's got a vera quiet lil song hasnt he...its funny how each lil finch sounds vera different!
@pulvaris Alex's song was played to him over and over from a recording of zebra finch singing. Being raised in captivity most of the time he pronounced only chirps and babbles. Finding him a girl motivated his desire to improve. Unfortunately the girl went for his dorm buddy [another finch, I'll see if I can record him], a more spotty and feisty fellow. Alex spent a number of his days after trimming his song and decorating his nest. He has thus far won high respects from me in patience alone :)
@mannermikael He was born with it in that condition, abandoned at birth. We thought it was a miracle Alex finally being able to land on a twig and not fall over. When Alex was young he couldn't balance himself even on the floor. We took turns holding him in the palm of our hands, where he would sleep soundly until hes hungry.
We haven't been able to relax his legs, which are curled up resembling skeletal flippers. His left leg has partial usability, the right is limp. :(
@arslantaher Since Alex was raised in captivity, we had to artificially imitate the courting call of zebra finches and repeated over a speaker when he begin to babble and squeak. No finch's call is alike, yours will find its own one day :)
@angelialvares you got a pont there

my friend, as a piece of advice, try to use a thinner sticks. this will allow your birds to grab the sticks better since their feet are small.
