I agree. It is true that often time the children with this problem tend to get misdiagnosed. The neurologist, so far, has been unable to find the problem with my daughter. Now I know what to ask. It is important for us parents to know what to ask.
I have a daughter with special needs. SHe was born hydrocephalic. SHe has overcome her hydrocephalus and her hypertonia. However, her speech delays still perists at her 6th year of life. I hae been searching for what it could be. Thank you for the video. It has given me a possible answer. I will ask her therapist and neurologist to screen her for speech apraxia.
I have to thank you, from the bottom of my heart, for doing this story on Childhood Apraxia. My two 7yr. old great-nephews, have this . We live in Ontario, Canada, and do you believe, in this day and age, that Canada has NOTHING for children who have this. Please pray for my nephew & his wife as they are raising awareness up here. Thank you and God Bless You.
I have already commented on this but continue to watch it again and again. THANK YOU so much for posting this!!!! I finally found a local clinic that specializes in speech apraxia... truly a miracle to find someone that doesn't insist on an ASD diagnosis because they don't really understand Apraxia. I shared this with friends and family because this has explained apraxia better than I ever could. Thank you and GOD BLESS YOU!
Im 13/m and have apraxia. people constantly make fun of me because of it, and i might have the first stage of arthritist. But the natural thing that happened after years and years of being made fun of the way i talk, i stopped talking. Now people make fun of me for not talking, but when i do they make fun of me cause of my speech problems..... Yea this really sucks considering i already have no self-confidence
I volunteer in a special education classroom 3 hours a day after school and one of the kindergartners has speech apraxia. He is so bright but you can tell he is very frustrated. He has started using a device to help him but he's only 5 years old so reading and writing is hard for him. I have heard him say "move" and "salsa", it's great to see him improve!
@raineko98 Specifically verbal apraxia, because there are other kinds of it, like: ideomotor, ideational, limb-kinetic, constructional, oculomotor, and gait apraxia.
My daughter has been through so much as well. She is 4 1/2 and was born with a Congenital Heart Defect and we almost lost her at 2 months of age. What are some of the causes of this? I see stroke, but she coded and was wondering if that pays a part and has enlarged ventricles in the brain.
whoah i talk like this in my nightmares. in one of my nightmares i had a dream that some pervert was trying to kidnap me and i ran to my mom but i couldn't tell her what was wrong i would just stutter and mumble.
@BR0WNY0DA Yeah, I know what you mean, I end up shouting something like Mum and it sounds so scary. I suggest you watch some videos on sleep paralysis, there are some great examples of them trying to shout in their sleep
My daughter is severely apraxic. We've moved to Hattiesburg, MS in order for her to attend the Dubard School For Language Disorders. It's an amazing school and she's made so much progress using the Association Method. Check it out!
@LaurenAlexandra711 sign language does help a lot. I have global apraxia meaning i have all forms of apraxia. I went to a preschool for childern that are special ed and i was thought sign language although i dont remember most of it it help alot when i couldn't say a word that was noticeable. I dont need it any more but it helps a lot.
It does help a great deal. My daughter - 19 months - is apraxic and I began teaching her signs when she was about 10 months (before I found out she was apraxic). I don't know how else I would understand her if it wasn't for the signs. After 3 months of speech therapy, she is improving, but signs still help for words she can't say.
@dlaparra at 18 months children only have a vocab of 5-20 words. to me, your daughter's language development appears completely normal. verbal apraxia is not a 'learning difficulty' - it is a result of lesions in specific locations in the left hemisphere of the brain caused by stroke, dementia or other traumatic brain injury (eg car accidents, loss of oxygen).
@therealjaytie: 1st of all, I do not know how you can write to me and tell me that my daughter's language development "appears completely normal". I don't even know you! You don't know my daughter nor have you evaluated her. My comment didn't give you any insight as to the details of my daughter's apraxia or how many words she was saying. I don't know how you can say that her vocab is normal. 2nd, they don't know the exact cause of apraxia. Some say it can even be genetic.
@tyilbs4 using sign language does not make them less social. they would still be attempting verbal language with people they know don't use sign language, but that can be really difficult a task, so to make them more efficient communicators in general sign language is a good option.
@Acemega234 Keep trying and don't give up! But also, fuck what everyone else thinks and forget what they say. People who don't and aren't willing to understand are the ones who merit pity, not you.
My son is 25 mnths & was thought to b suffering "Dyspraxia" / "Apraxia of Speech" @ the age of 12 mnths! (my sons red flag was the inability to chew his food, drooled alot & then the fact he wasnt talking was looked @ as he got older). He has been in ST since 13 months & still only has a few "clear" words, the rest comes out completely wrong.. if we're lucky he'll get the vowels in the word right though so I can guess what he's trying to say in context :)
Easy to say when you don't have a child with that issue! My son is 10 and barely can speak and knows how to sign language, but not everyone knows sign language and does him no good.
I work closely with a Speech & Language Pathologist who has been in the field for about 30 years. We both work at the Art and Drama Therapy Institute in Washington, DC providing services to adults diagnosed with Autism, Mental Retardation, Down Syndrome, etc.
Apraxia is something you get when you have something like a stroke and lose the speech you once had. DYSPRAXIA is when a child is born without speech and cannot generate speech on command. They may be able to talk on their own volition.
I'm getting my Master's in occupational therapy and apraxia is something you get when you've had a stroke. It's the inability to carryout purposeful movements. Aphasia, on the other hand, is also an effect of a stroke but it deals with the inability to speak or communicate.
i was diagnosed when i was 4 years back when it was practically unknown in kids. now i am 25 and am much better, but still have some problems such as 'r' words, some motor skills and it effects my learning, so im not doing so hot in college, but will graduate at least. my mom did lots of research and put me thru speech and motor skill therapy till 10th grade. be patient with your daughter. :)
im 17 and have apraxia. i was the first to be diagnosed in ohio, so until i was three no one knew what was wrong with me. speech therapy has helped, now i sound like i have a lisp/retainer
i think I have sppech apraxia and I am 25. I used to go to speech all during school and had it 2 to three time a week. My 28 month old daughter was just tested for the same thing and they think she has it also. I was never tested for it. but I sound like the older boy when I talk. and it is hard for me to say some things still. but the speech has helped my daughter. she is now saying mama and hat and seat and dot, dot. and she has only been in speech for three weeks and she has it twice a week.
this video is wonderful. There needs to be more like this one. My son is getting ready to turn four and he was diagnosed with this when he turned 3. We didn't know this disorder even existed. He is getting therapy and he is slowly getting better and we are thankful for that.
Thank you so much for this my 3 1/2 yr old son has Apraxia. It has been an agonizing journey with the evaluations. I amg lad he is recieving ot and speech now and he is doing better still can't fully understand him. But my husband and I are happy and can't wait until we can.
Im 14/M and im apraxic, mainly caused problems for my arms, legs, especially my fingers, also it affected my speech like many.I took physical therapy and it helped (although mine wasnt nearly bad as others, bad enough that it caused lots of problems though) growing up to this age has been hard people always making fun of how i do things or talk even though they dont understand how that feels. But i find my apraxia is also a good thing,imAn athlete and knowing im apraxic motivates me to try harder.
it almost sounds like a speech impediment....that's strange, but it's great that more people are getting the right diagnosis and that these families are bringing it to light.
Did you have speech early like befor school age and or did you go thru elementary school speech and if you did how often ..I have a 5 year old with apraxia and also my step daughter who is 25 i beleive she has it to ...
What a coincidence! I have been asked the same thing...I had speech therapy from the age of two until I was in middle school because I couldn't get certain words out right. But now that I am 26, in the last couple of years, I have been asked where I am from also. It's embarrassing not able to get the words out when I can think it so clearly. I didn't know there was a diagnosis on this until today. Just knowing that there are others out there makes me feel not so alone on this.
I am 12 years old and i have had Developmental Apraxia of Speech my whole life. I get bullied a lot and it sucks. Although i can be understood easier now. it hurts to have teachers give you weird looks because they don't know what your saying. and having people asking you to repeat things over and over.
My son is 3 1/2 years old and has moderate verbal apraxia. I'm also a sign language interpreter and has taught him sign language. It helps me to understand what he is saying. He sees a speech therapist every week and goes to a D/HOH preschool. He first reaction is to speak of course and I do encourage that but just in case I don't understand sign language does help. Its good to see success stories in Apraxic kids and am hoping that my son is another one.
I am 15, and i have diagnosed myself with a mild form of this, whenever i want to speak i can't get anything out, yet i know what i want to say. I don't know if i have this but all the symptoms make it so clear ..
Whenever you think you might have a problem, never doubt yourself. Trust your instincts. If you are seriously concerned that you might share this condition, &you notice it's interfering with your ability to lead a normal life, then make an appointment with a neurologist as soon as you can, &he/she will be able to OFFICIALLY diagnose the issue &offer suggestions for treatment. Even if this isn't the exact diagnosis, there still may be a different issue you might not have even realized you had.
My sister has apraxia and she is almost 3 years old she has 4 speech teachers and goes to a school and has kids that have problems. she is going to a friendship academy with other kids and a pre school i hope she will do good in there
I'm 16 right now and I have speech apraxia. It effects my reading, talking and writing, but luckily after a few years I've nearly got it under control. If your child or a child you know has apraxia, be patient with them. Help them if they stutter or pause, give them confidence if they feel down. With help and love, they will vastly improve. Thank you for posting this video.
mu granddaugter has speech issues, she is almost three, and she uses few words, and mainly sign or gestures. We didn't think too much about this, cause we know her, and most times under stand Kirsten speak...but we are getting help for her.
My daughter is apraxic also. I e-mailed this video to family members so they could fully understand what she is going through. Thank you so much for this info. If your child is not apraxic count your blessings, if he/she is, give them a kiss and tell them how much that you love them and how special they are to you!!!!
Many people with autism have Apraxia, but because it's labelled 'the autism' they don't get treatment for it. Other's have Semantic Pragmatic Disorder or Selective Mutism. The sooner we call these communication disorders by their true names, the sooner treatments will be more appropriate and people will reach their potential.
Donna Williams
autism consultant and author of The Jumbled Jigsaw.
Ms. Williams, thank you so much for being willing to put this information here on YouTube. I mean, lol. YouTube. I'm glad you don't confine yourself to the 'old world' of information. ^_^
i have Verbal Apraxia .but iam still smart iam the smartest person in of my classes.i read alot and iam a straigh A student.iam 14 yrs. old too.but people do make fun of how i talk and sometimes people do not understand me
As I watched this video on"Apraxia"it made me understand just how hard it is on parents who have children with a disorder.I am glad he is doing better, Thank God for mom,s and dad's like you both.
Thank you soooo much for posting this!! I've been trying to find it for months. My son has apraxia & this is the easiest way to explain it to others!! Thanks so much! :)
@outerskyblues87 I have a daughter who is 20 and would like to find a group on line for her to find people with apraxia for her to communicate with. Any advice?
@Jcerulo: there's a website called Daily Strength. You can google that. Once you get to the website, search for 'apraxia' and you'll find a group called 'Dsypraxia & Apraxia'
...too bad she couldn't pronounce "apraxia", it kept coming out Aproxia. Oh well at least they made it known to people sitting at home who may have never heard of the disorder.
Thank you for adding this video. I never saw this on tv! my daughter has Verbal Apraxia and I am eager to learn as much as possible about it. Thank you for helping to educate the public on this issue.

@outerskyblues87 I have a daughter who is 20 and would like to find a group on line for her to find people with apraxia for her to communicate with. Any advice?
Jcerulo 1 year ago
@Jcerulo I think there are some groups on Myspace and some on Facebook.
