Sounder.......... Sounder.......... Sounder........... Rah! Rah! Rah! Sounder is my life in rural Enfield, North Carolina. Growing the crops, molasses, baseball, sheriff, poor schools, stealing to eat, share cropping, preachers. It brings back memories of a hard life, but something that gives me to joy remember. Al Jarreau said, "WE GOT BY" Lightnin Hopkins said, "Needed Time" As a credit to the human spirit, in the face of having less of everything, we have survived, some have done well.
@PeluMaad~~Knowledge of the history of different forms, and structures of Musical form are very helpful and good to know in Theory class ! I just want to be entertained...I am not a "song writer", I'm a lover (to me)of good Music, and a listener, that's all...now, I'm going to find me some Blind Willie Johnson and Rev. Gary Davis to listen to...because I've never heard them play or sing, I don't think ! Thank you for the 411~~~ I appreciate it~~~~
@NoRosesForMe~~Thank you !~~~I really don't like putting labels on Music, It's all about feelings with me~~ Mississippi Delta blues, Chicago Blues, KC Blues, St. Louis Blues,Cool Jazz, Bebop, Hard bop, Swing, R and B, PoP, Country Western, Classical, Baroque, etc. etc. enough already ! To me Music, is Music ! Just enjoy it~~~ while it is being played!
@william52648 ..dude....I have a room full of guitars, mandolins and banjos...shelves of books, albums and CDs....I've been a student of the country blues since my father gave me Stefan Grossman's "How to Play Blues Guitar" in the late 60s. I know the difference between the blues form and folk gospel. I'm very familiar with Blind Willie Johnson and would never call him a blues singer. Would you have labeled Rev Gary Davis a "blues singer"...to his face?
uh william....this is NOT blues....your first clue should have been "Jesus"....this is gospel. e-music.com lists this track as Jimmy Reed too...WTF? I doubt Reed EVER recorded anything on acoustic...solo. I'm absolutey certain he never played in Lightnin's Texas monotone bass style. Yes, this version and Taj Mahal's version were in the movie Sounder. daddystovepipe's tutorial is great and it's not a hard song to play.
@PeluMaad This *IS* blues. Its gospel blues. There is a such thing. You should listen to Blind Willie Johnson.....or learn more about blues before you assume. William is right. And Lightnin was the best. Ever.
I think this recording is actually done by Jimmy Reed. I went to iTunes to download the song, and there was no listing for Lightnin' Hopkins. But the Jimmy Reed version is identical. Same key, same sound, etc. Check it out. Either way, it's a great song.
Thank you took me home to a place i havent been in years.
