"By the Lord before whom this sanctuary is holy, I will to N. be true and faithful, and love all which he loves and shun all which he shuns, according to the laws of God and the order of the world. Nor will I ever with will or action, through word or deed, do anything which is unpleasing to him, on condition that he will hold to me as I shall deserve it, and that he will perform everything as it was in our agreement when I submitted myself to him and chose his will."
0:30 (Post 2:) ... So please, learn about free market anarchism (aka libertarian anarchism or anarcho-capitalism) to realize that not only are governments not necessary to protect peoples' life, liberty, and property, (for these things can be protected through voluntary private organizations of people), but also their life and property protection services are inferior to the protection services that would arise in a voluntary free market anarchist society.
Governments ARE necessary for these purposes. Anarchism is a wet dream, and devolves quickly into some type of dictatorship, warlord rule, civil strife, or even government rule by popular vote.
What ape species doesn't have some type of government authority?
@ChristophDollis Some sort of democratic processes are necessary - but are not sufficient - in protecting freedom and civil rights. In a free and unfettered society, a spontaneous order will produce more freedom, not less, as you suggest. It is the free market - not government - that will generate the order you seek.
@ChristophDollis yes the Ape species have a system of government alright - the strong take from the weak. Statism has run its course and governments all over the western world have grown too large and become effective predatory states. Whatever kind of government we have in the future it will need to have far more constraints against its ability to expropriate private citizens, circumvent the law and abuse individual rigths. The Anarchists are right in this respect at least.
0:30 Governments necessarily threaten our rights. Even taxation for a property protection service is a necessary violation of our rights. What if someone does not wish to purchase a government's property protection services? It's the same argument for why taxation for things like medicare, social security, public education, welfare, or anything else is an act of aggression against people and their property. ALL taxation is coercive, even taxation for property protection services.
I'd argue that with a government there is a guarantee that you will lose those inalienable rights. A government works with compulsory taxation which is incompatible with respect for property rights.
That said, my point wasn't even about this. My point was the video is needlessly divisive.
Libertarians want limited government? I'm a libertarian and you can keep your limited government. Government by its very nature violate individual rights.
You can have been inclusive in this video and said libertarians want the least amount of government interference with individual sovereignty. But noooooo. No you HAD to positively affirm that libertarians want government.
@murbard There is a role for government, even most Libertarians will agree on that. But it is limited to protecting our individual rights, and nothing more. Without a small, limited government, there is no guarantee that you will be able to keep your inalienable rights of Life, Liberty, and Property. Therefore, we must have a small governing body to ensure that all individuals are protected, not just the ones who can defend themselves.
@murbard Come on now, you know there are different branches of libertarianism. The common flavors are minarchists and anarcho-capitalists. Please don't alienate yourself from the other group. We all want the same thing. If limited government could ever be established again, maybe minarchists would come to the conclusion that we could do with zero government. Lets work together!
Without an elected government to protect the rights of individuals, there can be no freedom, thus no libertarianism. If you think that if there were no government that people would be "free" you are mistaken, what you would have is anarchy. Anarchy is the absence of the rule of law, and would ultimately break down into mob rule.
Man needs a government to define an objective standard of law, uphold the courts and to provide for the common defense. Everything else, hands off.
@murbard chill out man. The phrase you're looking for is anarcho-capitalism; you can't vote for that. Voting libertarian (limited gov.) is at least a step in the right direction. If we keep fighting amongst each other we'll never get anything done.

A good primer on libertarianism is the video "The Philosophy of Liberty," which you can find here on YouTube and is eight minutes long.
