I'm a Google fan, i like all the advancements that they made and the philosophy that they preach, but I have to say that Microsoft is moving on the right direction. They've done a great work using photosynth, plus, using the street view attached to the 3d model is a thing of geniuses.
I love that someone posted this much of the conference. Blaise is very interesting to listen to and it's great to see Microsoft stepping up to challenge Google.
You should check out their Google Earth browser plugin sometime. I can't understand why they won't make it an option on Google Maps, as they've had the plugin finished for close to two years now.
Coolnansd, Microsoft was experimenting with street level photography before Google ever launched Street View, but I have to give Google credit for really being the first big name in mainstream mapping sites to use full spherical panoramas and really push it so that there's a lot of coverage.
I agree, in future, I see Google using HTML 5 on Google maps website... just because it doesn't require any plug-ins... and its much resource friendly than Flash or Silverlight...
Yeah but their coverage is more limited. Stil where they have coverage it's better than Google in most cases (Manhattan especially) and Google has nothing on Photosynth and their approach to corwdsourcing is much more limited as well. Birds eye view is also really nice.
GuruOfSales, Google has a head start on gathering Street View data, no doubt about it, and has done some interesting things with the tech from University of Washington and Microsoft Research's Photo Tourism project using its geotagged Panoramio and Picasa Web photos, but Microsoft has done more with that same research with Photosynth. With Photosynth, anything that isn't on the map can be put there by anyone who lives nearby using nothing more than a digital camera.
