It's not a factory defect. Mine makes it and the one I checked out at Best Buy does the same. It's just moving the lens continously with the "sport" mode to capture action/motion.
oh man sorry you had a defected one, but you should have staye with the canon, although the panny is rather nice, i just got the SX1, very very sweeet
no i have not used the panny at all but it does look real cool with an excellent easy photo function on the dial switch, but i have got the canon SX1 IS, i always think like this, canon makes cameras and printers etc, panasonic and sony makes all sorts of electrical equipment but canon and nikon stick to making stuff to do with photography and therefore INMO you cannot go wrong,
my sx10 have that sound too

It was a factory defect. I returned the camera and ordered the Panasonic FZ28. So far I am very happy with it.
