  • I've been trying to hand-feed chickadees from our Northern Ontario boreal forest for the past 2.5 months - still no luck. Because of work I can't get out every day so the weekend's the only free time I have. Sometimes it gets so cold my fingers & toes start to freeze and I have to quit. Your video lets me feed them vicariously. Can't wait to share the same experience as you and everyone else who finally succeeded.

  • Quite the experience, isn't it? While birdwatching with a friend this morning, we spotted a small group of chickadees, and because I know of their curious behavior, I extended my index finger to see if one would land on me. Sure enough after only a few seconds, one of my feathered friends came to say hello. This continued a few more times. The feeling of the little feet on my finger is something I can't even describe. I was speechless! Truly an amazing way to "get in touch" with nature.

  • The Chickadee is my favorite bird. They are just so small and tremendously friendly. I was out hunting, i sat in my treestand and waited for about half an hour. A chickadee had come out and landed right on the barrel of my gun and it stared at me for a moment before jumping off again. Ever since then it's been my favorite bird.

  • once they are trained they will fly to you every time they spot you.

to training them takes a little patience, however, you will be amazed how quickly they learn.

  • how long do you have to stand there before they start coming to eat it

  • they look so nice.here in germany our chikadees look a little bit different in color.i only saw a one very similar like this once and only for a short time before he went from tree to tree.

  • I've done this and there's nothing like the feel of their dear little feet on your fingertips!

  • Yeah and they are very precise at pecking seeds in your hand ! I only got bitten once and it pinches a very small bit.

It's funny how they get used to this too lol. When I was a kid, whenever they saw me comming outside, there was suddenly a handful of chickadees on the branches waiting haha.

But like you say, the feeling of their little feets on your fingers is something to remember ! haha. They give that "harmonized with nature" feeling too since they are wild animals being sweet haha.

  • It is easier than it looks.

Advice; Try to be alone or without many people.

  • trick is to hold perfectly- and I mean PERFECTLY- still- it will take a while but the little beggars will soon scope you out. If you wear a wool hat put some seds on your head too so birds landing there won't be disappointed.

  • I hope i can do this too..

    Cardinal if ever..

  • Can't wait to try this! Love the video!

  • Great video - We have chestnut backed chickadees

and they love the black sunflower seeds. Never tried to get one on my hand but they land on my shoulder while I'm filling the feeder all the time. Very brazen little birds. My favorite!!

  • if you put a few sunflower seeds on the bill of your baseball cap, they will come to get a seed and you can see their little feet gripping the edge of the cap...it's neat :)

  • I love it! And I think YOU are neat!

  • mother nature blesses you

  • chickadees>

  • It's more than one chickadee. I'm blessed with a nearby park where I do this during winter. During summer months they eat mostly spider eggs and don't care much for seeds. If you want to try this sometime, use Black Oil Sunflower seeds. They're a little smaller than the striped ones we typically eat, and are all black and shiny ;)

  • lol it keeps flying and coming back
