Whitney and MAriah are 2 different women with 2 different voices. And BOTH sang the anthem beautifully. Whitney's version was a bit more powerful, but I like Mariah's to because she did NOT try to be like anyone else but HERSELF, and she did a great job!
I read someone comment and they pointed out that Mariah Carey Star "Sangled Banner" was prerecorded.....Now I love Mariah and she's #1 in MY BOOK, but just so you know Whitney's was prerecorded also that why both Whitney & Mariah went back and song the songs again. Besides, one of the things our country stands for is DIVERSITY. So why not show off your own DIVERSE style and FREEly add a touch or two to the otherwise very simple, basic tune? My mom is certainly not a Whitney Houston fan but she says when Whitney sang this song millions of people everywhere loved it. Of course, she has an incredible voice. But not comparing her to anyone.. and seeing how this was the only song she had to sing that day....
It was way too restrained,whispery.. and soft spoken.
She didnt really let it go full tilt...til nearly at the end.
It still was, indeed, beautiful but this is a power song.

the national anthem can be sung by anyone who sings from their heart. it's not about how artistic you can be with your voice. all these ups, downs, and arounds are not impressive when it comes to this particular song. like someone else said...save that for the top 40 countdown. take a lesson from Ms. Houston.
