nae such thing as demon drink. jist big tumblers. gerry went through every emotion and imparted. sometimes it takes 5 minutes. for others it can take a lifetime. drunk or sober. what you got out of gerry was the best he could give. hail!
ach! drap yir feelings inti a hat. gerry will pick it out and work very hard to solve yours and his. a highly talented feeling scottish man. well revered and sorely missed. but his songs carry on forever
@JimLaddie Billy still tours his hilariously accurate observational comedy and after the split the pair remained close friends. Gerry was never comfortable being in the limelight and especially disliked the politics of the music business. He became quite reclusive and continued drinking too much. Gerry died earlier this year. If you see this within the next week you can watch the documentary Gerry Rafferty; Right Down The Line on BBC iPlayer.
One of the songs I sung myself long ago. Admired Gerry for his unique voice and wonderful songs. His heart has run dry and he is not going to be an engine driver as he pointed out in Rick Rack. Who knows what the day will bring it could bring anything. Who knows if we ll still be here we could be there. Today my heart cries for a friend I had and never met.
Other people may always think of Baker Street when they think of GR .... this one will do for me thanks. Lovely song... not the greatest orchestration, not the greatest lyric but just a lovely lovely song that resonates..........
Always thought this would have made a great single. One of my favs from that era. They where some act to see with Billy's nonsense and Gerry's songs. Brill
to bollix13!! Would LOVE to take the whole family (3 kids, Mum and Dad) but ... but.. Mum and Dad are 'conservative'. I produced Dad .... who's a fantastic man ... but "where did I go wrong?" - he used to rock around the rooms with me, as a youngster and we had music all the time - Mum has greater influence, I guess, as is right of course. Still, I remain Hooligran and one day .... I shall abduct my grandkids!! YESS. Music is food for the soul - I WILL see they're fed well.
Beautiful but sad song. The words are very true where humans are concerned because people often don't give others a chance & make judgements about someone before they really get to know them.
Another of Gerry Rafferty's songs I love. He certainly knows how to write a song - perfect for his voice, wistfully longing. I want to share such songs with my grandchildren. Have to find a way to prise them away from their parents ... and take them to folk festivals. Yeah ....Hooligran will strike!
Well I hope you succeed and have a great time with them, they must be very lucky with a grandparent like you. This song is so great, makes me smile behind me pc listening to this and taking a trip down memory lane. Just listened to Rick Rack, another great song by them and felt 16 years again for a moment... ;-)
Loved the humblebums stuff and of course gerry did go on to write some of the best music of the 70s.I wonder why their split was so acrimonious.Must be a woman or money.Still they both had great careers but sad they couldnt reconcile.
Nothing will compare to my dad singing this for me.
He use to take me to folk clubs when I was under ten and refused to go to bed on Sunday nights, sit me in the corner with a bottle of coke and some crisps while I watched this world of music unfold!

Love this song... love lots of his early stuff, like Patrick or stupid stuff like Coconut Tree, let alone his later stuff. So sad today.
RIP.

What a loss of this gentle voice - I met Gerry in 1969 when he was still with Billy Connolly, a great evening. RIP Gerry.

The coat she wore still lies upon the bed
The book I gave her that she never read
She left without a single word to say
Her father didnt like me anyway
She always wanted more than I could give
She wasnt happy with the way we lived
I didnt feel like asking her to stay
Her father didnt like me anyway.

I was readying a huge big nasty comment about this song, and then read your comment.
Bah.. you spoilt my fun!.
Dads are great, and not always around forever.
This song is actually great, and I was just going to say that even the Pope couldn't spoil it.
