he plays fingerpickin'.... he fuckin rules!! RIP Mr. Mayfield. He played his guitar using open F# tuning, his guitar playing sounded like a piano... he is one of the greatest guitar inspiration for me, even tough he's not a hellraiser like Hendrix, Eddie Hazel and other guitar heroes...
Mayfield was active throughout the 1970s and 1980s, though he had a somewhat lower public profile. On August 13, 1990, Mayfield was paralyzed from the neck down after stage lighting equipment fell on him at an outdoor concert at Wingate Field in Flatbush, Brooklyn, New York.
Superfly was tha shit back in the day,Curtis Mayfield was one of the great classic soul guitarists of his era in 60's & 70's every thing he did w/Impressions & solo career was Marvalous indeed.
i remember this episode of flip wilsons show. it was great. I have this album it was great then and now. Curtis Mayfield was great and he will be missed but at least we have his music.
In Feb '98 Curtis had to have his right leg amputated due to diabetes. It is said that he sadly died a year later (Dec 26, 1999) due to complications of diabetes. Let us remember the legacy that his music has left, a truly talented musical genius. Rest in peace, Curtis.
I believe he died in Brooklyn when a bank of stage lights fell on him. Must be 15 years ago by now... going from memory (and therefore might be inaccurate!)
Though the subject is rough, inner city life, and yes it's morally ambiguous - celebrates the life of drug pushers, hate Whitey, Black exploitation films, but the soul, music talent is there for all to see. Compare this great music to today's Black African American music - Rap/Hip Hop. Rap stinks - no musical talent, no message, no soul, just ignorant, talentless punks shouting, can't even understand the words. We should sterilize Rap singers.
As the late, Barry White would've said Sho' you right!!! But it sho' would be nice to know what was the greatest soundtrack Issac Hayes "Shaft" or Curtis Mayfield's "Superfly" both in my opinion are DAMN good. They stand the test of time.
Good Question. Both where good but I would have to go with Superfly, because what made "Shaft" dope was that it had unorthodox track lengths, instrumentals, and loaded with interludes, it was more orchestrated. Superfly was way shorter but personafied the songs better,Shaft felt like the background music in a movie while SuperFly sounded like the script...Just my opinion, SuperFly is better, a better movie too I love Isaac Hayes though, takin my babies (9,6,3,6months) to Stax next month. I RAP?
Not all hip hop is like that. Actually a lot of it DOES have a message. Listen to Lupe Fiasco. Listen to Common. Outkast. Nas. Listen to people freestyle. And THEN you can try and comment on what rap is. But to say that all Rap "stinks"...? As ikariss77 said, you've probably never heard REAL hip hop. You don't even know what hip hop is.
you could argue that with a lot of these artists that 'no junk no soul' applies, but mayfield and womack both cleaned up and were just as talented. Shame about David Ruffin really
Mayfield and Bobby Womack were trying to deliver the same message. Take this song and run it alongside 'across 110th street' by womack and you will see the similarities. The harlem drug ring i.e the council of seven were responsible for empowering african-americans in the wrong way, these guys were like 'it's cool, but there is more to us than just the dope'
well here's my top 10 best soul music voices after serious analyzing (In my opinion) 1. David Ruffin 2. Marvin Gaye 3. Curtis Mayfield 4. Otis Redding 5. Al Green 6. Eddie Kendricks 7. Smokey Robinson 8. Sly Stone 9. Harold Melvin 10.Bobby Womack/Jerry Butler (TIE)
Rap is the de-evolution of the 70's black power movement. Curtis Mayfield was the Socrates of Black Power music and modern day young black men would do well to recieve his wisdom.
I agree to a large extent, but not all rap should be discounted-- Public Enemy, Grandmaster Flash (The Message) and Queen Latifah, for example, try to open eyes and have a positive, empowering message.
I was a white, privileged (which I'm not apologizing for at all - I've done my bit for my fellow man) private-school boy when this song/flick came out, and, man, how cool I thought this was. This song exudes COOL!
He is of the architects of the word "HUSTLE". His music made the streets glisten, and made every player on the block a star under the street light with his ghetto theme music. Every good street disciple should have some. Thank you Curtis. If Heaven has a ghetto, You are the landlord under God's ownership. Rest peacefully, Brother. Right on!
Jesus had more than 12 disciples. He had disciples of music(Curtis Mayfied, Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, Donny Hathaway, Barry White, Isaac Hayes, Quincy Jones, Ray Charles, Otis Redding, Sam Cooke and James Brown) His 12 Disciples of Music and not a thief among you. RIP to those who are with Jesus. To the others, rock on!!!
He was good, too. Only thing he didn't produce his music, own his masters or own a record label. But God bless his life. Lot of energy and classic material.
Cool to see flip wilson again, also love those early 70s bongo drum songs.Too cool, wish they had music like that now.Even my mom liked the music i listened to.I couldnt listen to my kids music if ya paid me to.
Thank you for sharing and adding. I added this to my favorites. It is really great to see these classics! It is nice especially when you see something you have not seen before.

I notice he had a highly unconventional guitar technique.
Not only is he fretting bass notes with his thumb, but he uses no pick and an unusual "fluttering" fingerpicking style.
Obviously self-taught.
