Have you recreated anything by David Frank from The System? Or Chaka Khan's cover of 'We Can Work it Out' (played by I think Greg Phillinganes, last I heard w/Toto)?
@FelixTheCat24x7 +100. David Frank and the work he did for the System and various other artists in the 80's is very similar to the Gamson/Maher/Green style of production. I would love to see Geeljasjes cover some of his tunes.
Your pretty amazing man! I have been a Scritti fan for a long time and I knew how complex the pieces were... .but damn.... you clarified my assumptions. Keep it up!
And there were no computers then in music production - it was incredibly tedious to do what they did technically - almost superhuman- decades ahead of their time!
It's great to c what a big presence Scritti has on YouTube - a very unique chapter in pop music history
Because technology was so limited, compared to what we have now, they just pushed their limits. I think they also felt they had to, because making a 60-grand Fairlight sound like a Casio wasn't going to impress anyone. Even getting a decent sample out of a Fairlight would take you a day back then. We have now become extremely lazy. All the manual labour that had to be done is now virtually gone. Insert a plug-in, pick a preset and you're done.
Great job n I agree w u best lp of the 80s w grace jones 'slave to the rhythm' #2. I was working as a studio musician in NYC at the time in my mid 20s when I heard "the word girl" at a party right when it came out. I can't tell you how different those sounds and mix sounded at the time - from a different planet - I had no idea how they arrived at them but it became an obsession. I know from talking to people involved at the time w the record that they spent over 100k per track - absurd at th
you got me hooked on this album. I forgot how I got to this video a few months ago, but I've been rocking this for that long. I came back again to hear you play it and you really do it justice.
It's even exiciting to hear such good composotions with slightly different sounds. Very enjoyable. thanks and keep it up!
You're freaking NUTS! LOL Blows my mind, how you went about recreating these killer tracks - must have taken you weeks, didn't it? (don't blow my mind any more or else what little mind I got left goes down the drain... ;)) I mean all this as a HUGE compliment, of course! Killer!
hands down best video on youtube! i have one question: what is the name of the bass pedal in the bridge section 1:40 in "Absolute" (reminds me of a Moog Taurus)?
Good job, Gee. Gamson is the Man on synth bass and you definitely nailed his style. DId you remix that stuff with you playing all or most of the parts? Very impressive chops.
I can not tell you how impressed I am with what you did with this music. There are not words good enough. I watched this with my mouth hangin open the whole time...FROM BEGINNING TO END and it did (i'll admit) move me to tear up. ANDF I TOO agree w/ you, Cupid and Psyche '85 was one of my fav albums of all time and one I STILL listen to all the time. AND I am so happy you included "Love Of A Lifetime".
Brilliant Gee! You got the funk brother! Agreed that Cupid & Psyche is a classic album with production values that are in a class of their own. That period of David Gamson's work is like the very finest crystal.
seriously, you did this complete justice in every way. it is so great to see someone play live like this. I think you covered a lot of parts. i have worked many times with Ray Bardani, Nick Moroch and Arif himself. The original record was recorded at Atlantic and a small studio in Westchester. The programming was way ahead of its time by Gamson and Maher... again great work by you!! David Bendeth.
@dbendeth You are so right - I still to this day am amazed by the way that Gamson got what he did out of his synths. And yes, he did it complete justice.
WOW. I have trying to follow you along for just a bit on a jp8000. This album was the Bach of the 80's. You have done spot on work. How about Flashlight by P Funk.
Don't even know where to start-- the fact you're playing the bass live- the fact you virtually replicated the most challenging 80's gamson-ness, and then just to punch me in the face you include the Miles' version of perfect way to prove how cool you are. Pls do a "provision" medley someday?
@Percopius Heh, I remember all summer neighbors calling, asking me to turn it down. "Sorry, I can't hear you, I'm playing one of the all-time great album the way it needs to be heard!"
Nice work man! It reminds me of high school. The summer after '85 I listened to this album all the time. I tried the guitar riffs, but I think they were mostly sampled.
Well done. Despite growing up in the 80's, I never much paid attention to Scritti Politti; lots of intricate work in those lines; couldn't be an easy task learning to master them as you've done. I see a bloke named David Gamson was behind alot of their kbds and production; he should be proud.
One question for you, how tedious is the Drum programming? Do you tape the main beats out quantized via pads or Vdrums or do you actually step program the lot?
LoVe It!!! Why not do a Moog Bass Along for Word Come Back To Life, the best unknown Scritti track ever.. or why not a doing a Moog Bass Along for some of the best David Gamson tracks like the ones he did with Tony Lemans, Five Star, Donny Osmond etc. I know you would do a masterpiece of that kind of Gamosn mix. Byt the way, we have exactly the same Music Taste and you are also the same age as me :)

Brilliant! And I fully agree to cabeef, your channel is a great trip trough a very interesting musical period. This is one of those standard album everyone should poses. I was also very impressed and confused at the same time when it came out, with so many different sounds played that tight. They must have had the best producers, performers, engineers and a lot of very good stuff in their mix environment. Very well done again Geeljasjes and thank you for picking the right pieces for us :-)
Your channel typically travels through things I like. And THIS is not music, this is a TRIP! Thank you.
The spatial and exploding sense of Scritti stuff is here! Very good job! That good ol' mad Hyp'hyp Hyp HypnotiZe was a bit harder to fetch, uh? ;) the complexity of Green's subtle deconstructivist distortions.
I'm not suprised it took some time to do this mate, its a masterpiece. Wonderfully played and extremely well produced and arranged. I didn't realise I knew so many Scritti tracks!
You should find these guys on myspace and get them to take a look, I think they will love what you've done.

Good question and thanks.
I play the drums on the synth keyboard, but an e-drum kit would make life a lot easier.
Wouldn't say it's tedious, just not the same as playing live.
Addictive Drums is a brilliant piece of software to get a live drum track.
XLN-Audio is one of the best software companies out there.
