I am in the planning and design phase of making one of these myself.... Just a small... 2'x2' table top one. Question is... Do you think I could use a cold weld glue like JB WELD, or perhaps soldering it to hold it together? I know welding would be ideal but I'm not about to spend $200 on a welder.
@cardshark525 JB weld would be hard to use because you have to wait for it to harden. I would go with brass or copper wire and solder that. Try for silver solder, and avoid the leaded type. Use a propane torch for easy heat-up. Get your supplies from a welding supply place. Also look for "Swirling Brain" here on youtube...he uses solder quite nicely.
I just noticed that there has been a similar discussion a year ago, and the maker of this awsome sculpture said: "But, yes there's a motor turning the helical lift."
Also, if it was marble powered, then we'd have perpetual motion which is, due to friction, sadly impossible :(
Nice 240p for showing off your art and all.

Forget putting stuffed animals on the walls in a nursery; put one of these and ur kid would be amused for hours!
mippy202 11 months ago
@mippy202 Haha, that's genius! You'd check on them like 6 hours later and they're eyes would still be zooming around, lol!

Incredibly cool and beautiful--hypnotic to watch. I make mine out of paper, but I like the flow of yours better.

Hi....fantastic track...Do you start with a plan or the frame and sort of invent it as you go?
NigelLoller 1 year ago
@NigelLoller I start with the frame and let it build as I go... Usually there is too much going on to really draw it all out to begin with.
motleymdg 1 year ago
@motleymdg Ok...as I thought...Thanks

where the hell do you get the parts for this? ITS FRICKIN AWESOME!!!!!!
stickbBOB 3 years ago
I make these from scratch. I start with 12ft pieces of wire. Then cut and bend and weld until it's done!
motleymdg 3 years ago
Do the marbles raise itself? How does that work?
TianSan 2 years ago
No, that long thing in the middle is some kind of screw that pushes the marbles up
FRQDO 2 years ago
What's moving the screw though? Is it battery powered, or is it the force of the marbles?
TianSan 2 years ago
how much would u charge for something like this and could you ship it?

How to you keep the two rails the same distance appart?
iamthe7th 3 years ago
I use track clamps that are spaced the same to hold the tracks the same distance apart and align them.
motleymdg 3 years ago
@motleymdg What is a track clamp? I am buying all the stuff I need to build my first one in a few days. Thanks!

This is really nice! How does the elevator work?
ossidrammen 4 years ago 9
It's based on an Archimedes screw originally used in raising water for irrigation.
motleymdg 4 years ago
@ossidrammen Small electric motor.
shashoni109 1 year ago
Is there a motor attached or does it keep on moving byitself? I noticed the wire coming out the bottom.
pottfuck 4 years ago
It would sure be easier if operated itself! But, yes there's a motor turning the helical lift.
