I think you had more fun making the trap than catching the rat! I had a year-long fight with moles digging up my yard & tried all kinds of traps. Probably wasn't too successful due to not reading the instructions. Finally, I rigged a small set of contacts to close when the mole pushed dirt thereby competing the circuit to set off a model rocket fuse that was stuck in a homemade firecracker. (50 grams of black powder in paper tube). Blew that mole into little bitty pieces! Great satisfaction!

you could use an IR switch but at the time i used the touch pads. the pads worked quite well and were sensitive enough for most weight of rats. i,m going to make a new one this year sometime and i will be using a different technique of sensors and switches, but i have not decided which ones yet.

If you really wanted to kill the rat; since the cage is alluminum/metal, you could set up a wiring for a amp jolter, all you'd need to do was when the pressure pad is set (should probably use metal to make sure hes connected) have it send alot of amps (to kill him instantly) and not many volts, im sure you don't want a burnt rat. Take note that the metal that connects the rat, MUST be on the feet, or nose, as I do believe that if itis just on their fur, it will do nothing. Use safely!

To make an even more sensitive pressure switch, you can fold a piece of stiff card and line it with aluminium foil. Connect your leads to the foil (even sticky tape will do). This might be useful for trapping mice, which are far lighter.

hurro67, if u watched my other videos u would have seen that i have caught a couple & i have let them go at our local woods. but more kept coming & i was advised by pest control 2 destroy them. & yes i am married with 4 kids so i don't need a girl friend, thanks. these little critters were shitting and pissing all over their toys in my shed & if you r not aware, these things carry awful diseases. i have not had any rats back 4 a while so i think i have done an excellent job.

i have re-built the trap using wood as there was a problem with this one. when i caught a rat, the rat would chew the wires and i would have to keep re-wire the whole thing. the new one has got all the wires hidden and is a lot stronger, if you would like to look at it it is on my youtube page called (electronic homemade rat trap #3).

well i waited over two weeks for him to go in the trap. he eventually did but he bust the door off the cage. i have since found out the rat is living under the shed, under the concrete base so i poured water into the hole and i have not seen him since.
