Its comical how Joya's courage here is so unfathomable that Paul Jay has to ask the same question over and over - if the U.S. leaves who's going to take care of the warlords and Taliban? UN can cut all foreign military aid to Afghanistan from neighboring countries, send in humanitarian aid, and let us work out our internal conflicts...

I think what she meant to say at the end was that a civil war wouldn't make a lot of difference to the populace as they are constantly being brutalized anyway. Malalai is a fearless, tireless fighter. On this tour she has packed in events and interviews from morning 'til late at night. She's so formal in the interview, but when you meet her in person she's all smiles and friendship. Malalai is a tribute to her people. If there are more Afghans like her they could get their way one day.

Afghanistan needs socialism. It needs to emancipate women, take those burqas off and burn them. That's what was done starting in the 1920s in Uzbekistan and other parts of Soviet Central Asia and it was a long struggle against medieval ways of thinking, but by the 1950s the burqa was gone and it has never returned.

Malail Joya is an Afghanistan citizen and parliamentarian she is living in Afghanistan and the Warlords & corrupt Gov't officials hate her . The U.S. & NATO only concerned about their own geopolitical interests and don't really care about the citizens of Afghanistan. Obama seems more interested in maintaining the American Empire than doing what's best for Afghanistan or Pakistan or Iraq etc. Americans and Canadians should realize they do not have the right to other nations labor or resources.

The U.S. invaded Afghanistan because the Taliban refused to hand over Al-Qaeda. We're *staying* in order to prevent Asian energy independence. The Taliban controls 10 - 15% of Afghanistan. The Karzai gov. controls about 30% and the rest are controlled by warlords. The Taliban has 5 - 10% popular support in the country. The top U.S. military commanders are pretty clear Al-Qaida no longer exist in Afghanistan except for inoperational figureheads. The U.S. is there supporting a government of ...

that was always my first thought, apologize for the occupation - visibly, not only at the top, make the troops demonstrate that they have a mission for the afghan people, wear signs of respect, just serious broad vertical diplomacy

but as she says: that would require that the mission is honest and the military really wants to help, not mainly sustain and prove itself or secure imperial interests

Paul Jay did the right thing by hammering her on the subject of what will happen if the US just leaves.

The truth is that she doesn't have a good answer. That DOESN'T mean that the US SHOULDN'T leave.

It just means that it's naive to believe the problems of Afghanistan will end if the US simply moves out.

She has no good answer for the simple fact that the warloads and the Taliban would start again at square one.
