Agreed. Russian Circles, Caspian, God is an astronaught, etc etc the list could go on, all sound the same. They're all brilliant, but Pelican really has atmosphere.
WTF. God is an Astronaut and Caspian aren't related to Pelican at ALL! They all fall within the post-rock realm, but you are meaning to tell me Pelican is the only one with atmosphere? Pelican is unique in that they focus on heavyass riffs, but that just makes them different not better.
Pelican destroys all other bands from this genre, including Isis, Russian Circle, you name it. Their songs are more artistic, more sophisticated, more nuanced and textured and lack the monotony of other so-called ambience or post-metal bands. So anyone here who praises the other bands shut the fuck and leave this post because you are intruding into the holy shrine of Pelican.
Russian Circles is better at being Pelican than Pelican is at being Pelican :P jk
No really, Pelican is more heavy guitar riffs, and Russian Circles is more Bass oriented. I'd hardly call Pelican "more sophisticated, more nuanced, and textured" than RC or many other post-rock/post-metal bands. Listen to 'Firdous E Bareen' from ISIS and you tell me they aren't sophisticated...
Love Pelican. But. I think you are unjustly trashing those other bands.
Your definition of sophistication is skewed. You are confusing sophistication with technical ability. That is not at all what I'm referring to. I'm not referring to the ability of a band to tweak with levels, and incorporate innovative designs and instruments into their reportoire. That's not what I'm referring to at all. I'm referring to song writing. Listen to 'March to the Sea' by Pelican. And then come back to me and tell me that's not more sophisticated than Isis or Russian Circles.
Uh, when you say "more sophisticated, more nuanced, and textured" that sounds very similar to "ability of a band to tweak with levels, and incorporate innovative designs and instruments into their reportoire." If you meant their songwriting, then why didn't you just say so? ...And you accuse ME of having a skewed view of sophistication? Sophistication in many ways is subjective, and I was merely going along with a definition I thought you were implying.
Can someone please tell me what kinda bass he plays? the one with the double cutaway and oval pick guard. i thought it was a fender but can't find one like it.
wicked awesome tree there at the end,the ride looked fun on a dry day with a sporty little car with stick shift..too rough for a bike though...eitherway,great riding tuneage, especially if you have the road to yourself!
The Fire In Our Throats Will Beckon the Thaw is an amazing album front to back. If you're looking for some of their heavier shit. Check out their self titled EP, or the song "Drought".
Wow just checked out the video on Pelicans website. I'm glad you finally got into this band, Australasia and The Fire in our throats will beckon the thaw, along with the self titled ep are the muddafukkin shit.
I guess I'll take this down when someone posts there new video on here.
the funny thing is the other night i was forced to watch headbanger's ball as a joke to see how bad it has become. 2 and a half hours of the usual teen bop screamo, ultra toned down black metal videos that looked as if they were filmed in 93, and some boring as hell hardcore. i was about to blow my face off then this song came on and as i spent my whole saturday night/sunday morning in agony i found that i had soiled myself in joy of discovering this band.
I think ventingmachine is talking about the style of drumming... maybe thats why Pelican is well-liked by people. The drummer has quite an unique style of drumming which actually keeps very good time with the song itself although it may sound really irregular with the guitars sometimes. I use 0:29-0:38 as an example. Cheers!
I like Pelican. But the drumming is at best poor. And I really don't see arguing against that unless you know nothing at all about music. Really, does the drummer EVER add anything to their sound? It sounds as if they have a drum track playing every time. The guy wouldn't know what a fill was if it slapped him in the face.
where the fuck is he going?

i would like to theorize that this genre of post-rock will be one of the genre's that generations later on will identify this generation with.
60s and 70s had classic rock, 80s had shitty electronic pop, 90s had grunge, metal and alternative, and now that has spawned post-rock, 00s genre
TheOB212 3 years ago
that or techno metalcore
rarehound 3 years ago
Seriously? Out of all the genres that are actually popular and well-known, this generation will be associated with a narrow avenue of metal?
Theorize my dick.
