  • Why is this even an argument. Embryonic stem cells and adult stem cells are the exact same shit - completely unconscious, tiny biological cells that no one should be getting uppity about. The stupidity of the religious never ceases though.

Besides which, anyone who watches a video on stem cells made by the catholic church and takes it seriously is retarded. One only needs to read the video description to see how biased and moronic the creator of this video is.

  • A group of Canadian patients just back from Noble have reported similar results. “I can actually see what I thought were long-dead muscles forming in my feet” said Larry Vermeersch of Kenora, Ontario. “My balance is back and I’m walking without a cane. I’m a pretty hard guy to convince, but getting these two procedures together has made me a believer. I’m looking forward to the physio ahead because I can feel everything coming back.” Log on to ccsviclinic. ca for more information.

  • A universal benefit reported by every patient has been the recovery of bladder control. Most MS patients have various bladder control symptoms that include urinary urgency, incontinence, nocturia, or urinary hesitancy as a result of the disruption of electrical impulses from the brain to the nerves and muscles that are involved in emptying the bladder (pudenal nerve, urethral sphincter, detrusor muscle). • With regard to MS patients, “We are cautious, but nevertheless excited by what patients are telling us. Suffice to say that the few patients who have had the therapy through us are noticing recovery of neuro deficits beyond what the venous angioplasty alone should account for”. • Cancer is caused when certain toxins, chemicals or radiation, cause a cell to skip the G1 phase, the G1 or growth one phase, is where a cell spends most of it's time. A cell that lives for 120 days spends about 119 days in the G1 phase. A cancer or tumor cell skips that phase and goes to the S1 (synthesis) phase and then to the G2 (Growth two) phase, and then divides. This was not pasted, I learned that in science class. I'm 16 and I know this.

  • I'm catholic, I'm for embryonic research. I know many people who's life and limbs where saved because of it. It does not form tumors, as they only multiply at the speed of the cells around them. Before they make claims like that, they should know how cancer is caused.

  • YEAHHHHHH Quote more people out of context. Well done catholics.

  • Getting your "science" lessons from the catholic church is kinda like getting brain surgery lessons from an auto mechanic

  • This is a great video! This is the best video on Stem Cell research I have ever seen. It shows the scientific view, and even better, the religious views of the Catholic faith. It shows that we Catholics are for Stem Cell Research, but NOT Embryonic Stem Cell Research.

  • Recent scientific evidence shows that Jesus liked to touch little boys... Don't like the sound of that... I'll make you a deal, I'll keep my science out of your religion, YOU KEEP YOUR RELIGION OUT OF MY SCIENCE!

  • @evilgenius2003 Please go on. What's the evidence for that?

  • @Krshwunk There isn't any. Just like there isn't any evidence of his divinity, just like there isn't any evidence of any god of any kind. I was being facetious... Just like when fundies who call themselves "pro-life" to protect a small grouping of cells, support capital punishment. Or is that irony? Or stupidity?

  • @evilgenius2003 There's obviously evidence of God (e.g. the millions of reported miracles), but whether that conclusive or not is another question.

I believe in capital punishment if society cannot safely protect a dangerous criminal from society (e.g. if the prison systems are weak and overflowing and it's easy to escape). In that case, it is the killing of a guilty person. In abortion, it is the killing of someone who has committed no crime.

  • @Krshwunk Oh yes, all those miracles...healing the sick and such... Though it's rather strange that god never heals burn victims or amputees... Actually god never does anything that you can actually see of course... Because he's imaginary. You mention abortion? You don't really know where embryonic stem cells come from do you? Usually from left over blastocysts from IVF procedures or, purpose made in culture. Nobody is killing babies for stem cells. Cells in a dish are not a person.

  • @evilgenius2003

You can't prove that God is imaginary. You've probably never experienced God. Other people claim they have. Many people have claimed to see miracles. You don't know what they saw. They may not be able to prove it to you, but you can't disprove them. You are taking a leap of faith to say that they didn't see anything supernatural.

If someone (who is made of cells) stands in a dish ... then they're not a person?

  • @Krshwunk By your reasoning, you can't disprove that I am god... Therefore, I am god. On your next point, if a dismembered finger (which is made of cells) is in a dish... is it a person? Should this finger be granted all the rights and legal protections of a person? What about a blood cell? or a skin cell? Should they also be legally defined as persons? If so then we will need to arrest anyone who performs blood tranfusions and skin grafts and charge them with human trafficking.

  • @evilgenius2003 Technically, I have to proof that you are not God. But I'm going to take a leap of faith that you are not.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but mere skin cells and blood cells can't develop into a full-grown human being. An embryo can however. That means an embryo is merely an underdeveloped human being ... and thus a human being.

  • @Krshwunk You are indeed wrong. Science has in fact cloned animals using nuclear transfer from "mere skin cells" Dolly, the most famous cloned animal was created by nuclear transfer from a mammary gland cell. You didn't know that did you? Which of course means that you have been attempting to debate this issue without knowing the facts... Interesting. You may find that you can defend your position better with knowledge rather than leaps of faith. Start by learning what a blastocyst is.

  • @evilgenius2003 I thought we were talking about persons ... not sheep.

  • @Krshwunk In order to create stem cells which would be useful to a sick individual we would need them to be a genetic match. This means they would be created using somatic cell nuclear transfer. (just like the sheep) The created blastocyst could then be used to create the necessary tissue. (ie new islet cells for a diabetic) Your response shows that you STILL have not bothered to learn any of the facts about this issue. A blastocyst is an undifferentiated group of cells. It is not a person.

  • @evilgenius2003 Hmm. You may have a point. I'll have to think about that. Thank you.

So ... just to get your opinion ... when DOES an embryo become a person? When it passes through the birth canal?

  • @Krshwunk To be clear, blastocysts for stem cell purposes should NEVER be put in a womb! As such, they never progress to even the embryo stage. If we're talking good old egg and sperm in a uterus... As my personal opinion only, I would say second trimester. There is a primitive brain and nerves then, and it allows sufficient time for most risks to mother and child to be assessed. That said, should complications arise later which endanger the mother, her life must come first.

  • @evilgenius2003

So, what I gather is that it is unclear when an embryo becomes a person. Wouldn't the prudent and moral thing to do is to avoid abortion altogether (no matter how developed it is) ... since we may be killing a person otherwise, as far as we know?

When you say the mother's life must come first ... should that be enforced even if the mother wants the baby's life to come first? Just clarifying.

  • @Krshwunk Embryonic stem cells and abortion are two COMPLETELY seperate issues. I am not going to help the church in their attempts to tie them together by debating abortion with you here. As to your second question, medical procedures require informed consent... They are not ENFORCED. If an expectant mother wishes to sacrifice her life to potentially save her unborn child, that is her choice. If she would prefer to live herself... that is still her choice. Not yours.

  • @Krshwunk

True, no one can disprove God. But that doesn't change the fact that the evidence for its existence is the on the same level as the claim of a schizophrenic in a mental home. Personal subjective experience is intrinsically worthless for anyone but yourself, and even for yourself.

  • herp derp my zombie god is right don't use stem cells

  • I think sinds now GERON and ACT compagnys who provide stems cells in the quest to cure blindness and paralysis with cells that are build without destroying the embryo they should spend their money in it. It can become like a mother Theresa, the help for everyone and it is because of the approval and not destroying the embry at christian standards... (i think) so some of the money should go to their reseach and not in redecorating the vatican.

  • thank you this helps alot with my speech on stem cells

  • gift3dluk31, you are welcome!

  • very informational. thank you

  • themachine2, you are welcome!

  • Why is it that no one in Canada or the states that has these treatment centres and you have to go outside of the country just to get treated? sorry everyone about all of the questions I'm just wonderng about it.

  • Why do they say that it's not promising?

Ozone treatments and also Stem Cell treatments do help too.

  • samm - With a little research you will find that the theory is ESCs have more potential. And they very well may. However, as of this date, there have been no breakthroughs, in ESCR, , , But the best results have been realized in ASCR.

  • "Since the embryos he planned to use were doomed anyway-- one of the arguments cited by Bush--he decided he was justified by the good that might come of the research. 'I could not see that throwing them out was better"

If embryos were destroyed AND ALREADY DEAD, my logic would then be to put them to better use such as research than just "trash" them or dispose of them anyways....

  • reminds me of one of those in-game videos in Doom 3

but yeah..adult stem cells are legit, useful and should be used for theraputic cloning

  • I wonder if there is an available text for this video. Can anyone help me?

  • Nice video. I dont know anything about this topic but one thing is for sure, any destruction of life in progress, regardless of the phase, is criminal to God and life.

  • evanom2, thank you for your comments!

  • @evanom2 so flushing semen down the toilet is murder...

  • @lishey100 No, that's because semen doesn't have the full DNA of an individual human being. An embryo, however, does.

  • @Krshwunk score for you

  • @Krshwunk Then again...what u said was stupid...just because something has dna doesnt make it conscious

  • @lishey100 I never said that merely having DNA makes you conscious. Why is that relevant? Are you implying that if a thing is unconscious, it's okay to kill it? Is it okay to kill sleeping people?

  • @Krshwunk Conscious as in self aware.

  • @lishey100 A person who's been knocked out cold is not aware of anything. Hence, it's okay to kill him, right?

  • @Krshwunk Words have more then one meaning conscious can mean:having the mental faculties fully active: He was conscious during the operation. or aware of one's own existence, sensations, thoughts, surroundings, etc.Don't try to put words in my mouth when you don't know what they mean.An unconscious human is still a human. An embryo is not.

  • If you dont want to watch the whole thing then watch from 4:52 to 8:49 it goes over all the scientific problems(and the moral problem) with trying to use or research embryonic stem cells that are on this video.

  • padraicbg and wgunn both show the power of influence. They can make a challenge without evidence to back up their claim. padraicbg claims it's propaganda without stating evidence contrary to anything said in the video. wgunn makes claims about differences. and welcomes ethics for the "leftovers". Protestants number over 2500 denominations in the US with 5 new ones every year (see the Handbook of Denominations in the United States published by Mean and Hill).

  • padraicbg, there is no bias in the video. The only reason you say that is because you disagree with the conclusions; conclusions which are based on sound science, sound ethics and sound theology. If the video had come to the opposite conclusion, you would be saying what a great video this is...

  • ESCs and ASCs are different cells, and useful for different things. You can't substitute one for the other. People need to know that the Catholic Church places their particular version of ethics above any scientific consideration, and have mistakenly conflated ESC research with their views on abortion. Ethics advice is welcomed, but they need to understand the science first in order to make an ethical judgment. Use of IVT leftovers is generally agreed by non-Catholic ethicists to be OK.

  • wgunn, adult stem cells are achieving the objectives the embryonic stem cells have yet to achieve. Killing and embryo for scientific study is worth of Dr. Mengele. The Church understands the science and the ethics of the situation, which is more than I can say for those who wish to kill embryonic human life.
