The speech Bentsen made in 1988 was directed to fellow VP Candidate Dan Qualye. He said "Senator, I served with, I knew Jack Kennedy, Jack Kennedy was a friend of mine. Senator, you're no Jack Kennedy." Reagan is not at all confident. In the speech, he said he utterly rejected the views that the economy was weakening and later flip-flopped by saying "let's not dismiss our current troubles." You can argue his mentality was weakening, but the functioning part of his brain knew it was over.
He knew Clinton had it won. He does not at all look or act confident that the Republicans will maintain control over the White House. In his mind, the New Dealer he had been before he got involved with Nancy told him his continued policies had messed up and it was over. He's also borrowing lines Lloyd Bentsen made in an 1988 debate. He changed his political tone a little too, as you'll see if you watch the entire speech. He talked about the need to strengthen education and health care.
Regan believed that America is and was the eternal best of all humanity. That Jesus loves us special. And people LOVE to hear that kind of thing. *That* is why he's so popular. He increased the national debt by a trillion dollars, raised taxes, and expanded the size of federal government.... A democrat's record, I'd say
It fascinates me how people love to be in denial about this man, it only makes you wonder about peple....this man gave his life to his country,,think about it, he didn't enter political life until he was 54, when most people are thinking and planning retirement..... love the man, will never be anyone like him again! We need him now more than we did in 1980! RIP Mr. President!
What's a good humored way of telling off Lloyd Bentsen and making fun of Clinton at the same time! I've always though that Bentsen's remark to Quayle was uncalled for and out of place. He deserved to be ridiculed for it.
@Claronium780 you say he's over-rated? well, all he did was build up the military, create 20 million new jobs, lead to the end of the Cold War, increase the real wages of the middle class, cut taxes from 70% to 28% while INCREASING the amount the Fed Govt recieves, cut unemployment nearly in half, ditto inflation ( 14% to 5-6% ), and interest rates ( 20% to 8% ).
@KEV8551 Actually, he IS indeed overrated when you coldly consider what was done under his presidency instead of relying on his public image; I, for one, would have agreed with you until recently when I decided to put his deeds under scrutiny.
An interesting article assessing Reagan in detail: The Sad Legacy of Ronald Reagan: mises . o r g/freemarket_detail . a s p x?control=488
@SniperMaske you can SAY he's over-rated, but look at the stats i previously mentioned.
also, he was a game changer. before Reagan, all democrats were calling themselves liberal, and the nature of the beast was to grow govt. after Reagan, dems were split with most calling themselves moderates, and the nature was to cut govt. and rely on the private sector. that and the tax rates coming down from 70%...he changed the dynamic...throw in the IDEA of winning the cold war, he's the man.
@KEV8551 It's pretty straight forward. Disparate drug-sentencing laws---if you smoke crack, you go to jail (black people drug mostly). If you snort or smoke cocaine, you're fine (mostly white people). Read up on it.
@BlackThoughtChannel i've looked up disparate sentencing. 1st off, he's the POTUS. they don't do much sentencing.
2nd, i'd like you to look up the violent crime rate associated with Crack vs Cocaine. Cocaine is more of a 'personal' demon. most victims are the users. Crack is more dangerous, w/worse ingredients, and has a higher amount of violent crime committed associated with it, stealing to afford it, etc.
drugs are bad...all of them. you're stretching it to blame this on Reagan.
@KEV8551 Is that because crack in of itself causes people to be more violent? Or is it because more violent communities also tend to have more crack users?
Yup he built up the military, cut discretionary domestic spending on the politically weakest Americans, "created" 20 million new jobs that paid mostly low wages, gave huge tax cuts to the rich, raised taxes on the middle class in 1986 from 11% to 14%, unemployment fell but the Fed minimum wage was never raised (Business men were Happy), cut inflation & interest rates but gave us the Saving & Loans Crisis>and he lead to ending the Cold War (we agree but 2 what extent is debatable)
@Salsa23PR tell me WHAT program was cut? liberals want it all...they want Reagan the Deficit Creator, but they bemoan his 'cuts.' the only thing he cut was the rate of growth...and that was in very few things. we have the deficits to prove it.
then they want Reagan the tax cutter...but now they talk about how he brought the rate back up.
@KEV8551 Yah he also created alot of the boogie men we are fighting today Like Osama bin laden and Hezbollah. He also royally screwed central America by funding the contras. I wouldn't say hes over rated id just say hes a dick.
@DivineMoleculeDMT yeah...he created terrorism...cause they weren't attacking the west before that...they didn't kidnap olympians in '72, or take our embassy in Tehran...no, they waited for Reagan to come feed them. had Reagan not worked with the Contras, or Afghans, communism would have spread.
his working with those countries helped deplete the Soviet treasury, and were the right things to do at the time. Central America would be worse with a communist state.
@KEV8551 So your saying that funding people that went around terrorizing their own people was a good thing? Doing what we did to stop communism isn't a good excuse for me and that's all it is. An excuse.
@DivineMoleculeDMT they did things, no doubt. but they were NO WORSE than the Sandinistas were doing to the people against them. it was war. war has bad things happening.
was it better than allowing the Soviets a possible staging base in our back yard? yes.
a good question to pose would be why were members of our congress dealing with, or rather trying to, deal with the Sandinista Communist?
@KEV8551 Im just tired of this bullshit excuse of "Oh it would have been way worse if the soviets were their". How could you possibly know that it would have been worse? Its a shit hole now because of what we did and the soviets may have done the same. Its annoying how the U.S. and the U.S.S.R. treated the world like a chessboard. Very little good came out of the cold war and neither side was the good guy. Each side had their skeleton in the closet.
@DivineMoleculeDMT you can look at the attrocities in eastern europe to see how much worse it could have been. in those countries Reagan is very well respected. history is a great teacher of how backwards the soviets left things.
as for Central America, the Cold War didn't do that...500 years of exploitation, started and mainly carried out by Spain for about 300 years to 400 years ago. they set up economic systems where there was no middle class. just the few rich and the very many poor.
@KEV8551 Im not denying the soviets did bad things but you cant overlook the things that we did like "manifest destiny", the displacing and killing of millions of native people.
@DivineMoleculeDMT i know reagan was old, and he joked about knowing thomas jefferson, but to place the blame of 'manifest destiny' on him is a bit much.
now, let's also point out that when 2 cultures meet, one survives, the other is assimilated. America didn't invent that.
AND the idea that those native americans were living peacefully, happily over here...that isn't true. they were killing each other. do the research. the chickisaw sold others as slaves, others were were worse.
@KEV8551 So your saying mass genocide and displacement of people is OK? I find it disturbing that we killed the natives so effectively that Hitler implemented some of the same strategies in Europe during WW2. Just because others cant play nice doesn't mean we have to barge in and do something about it. The Europeans didn't live in harmony and fought why didn't we kill and displace them?
@DivineMoleculeDMT Hitler propposed lots of things. Universal Healthcare, Smoking Bans, etc.
as far as Native Americans in the US...some were mistreated. ALL were not. many assimilated ( Choctaw, Chickasaw, etc ). many Americans were trying to help them.
hitler rounded up people and put them in camps. he then, when the war got too tough, began to actively exterminate them. you have half a knowledge of history...enough to get twisted.
compared to other 'superpowers' the US is angelic.
I didn't care for Reagan's politics too much but I've always thought he was a thoroughly decent person with good values and the interests of America at heart. And his wit is well known, as is displayed here.
LOL. I love Reagan. Im a Republican. (Moderate) He was such a master of Politics and being THE Leader. Whether that was good or bad is up to people to debate. I liked him and disliked him, but as an American, I loved him a whole lot more. ^_^
Lol. Reagan "knew" Thomas Jefferson. Yeah, right. Reagan and the entire conservative movement would be rebuked by Jefferson in a heartbeat. Ron Paul is the modern-day thomas jefferson. ;)
This was a great line. His opponents always tried to use his age against him. Bur Reagan had a way of turning the age issue around and make his opponents look ridiculous for even bringing it up.
BTY, Reagan was the same age when he ran for president that Joe Biden is now. Talk about hypocrisy from the Libs.
True, BUT WHO WAS BRINGING UP HIS AGE IN 1992? Joe Biden is currently 67 years of age as well. REAGAN WAS TWO YEARS OLDER THAN BIDEN'S CURRENT AGE WHEN HE WON THE 1980 ELECTION. This line is also not that great either. Look at Reagan, he is exhausted, shaking,-desipte the fact x-rays showed he still had some youth-like body cells even when he had Alzheimer's Disease, and he is stuttering when he says "he....he was a friend of mine." He doesn't appear to be confident of a Bush victory at all
You don't want to hear the full speech, trust me. Just before he said this, Reagan said that a Democrat's "change" message could only be trusted if "they ever quoted a passage of Lincoln and meant it." He is not the same jubliant speaker here as he was in the 1980's. Even in this portion of the speech, he appears to be exhausted, dazed, and stuttering. I think it's clear he sensed the end of the Reagan Era was coming This is not the Great Communicator at his best. He was a good speaker

No, HE WASN'T THE SAME MAN HE WAS WHEN HE TOLD GORBECHEV "TEAR DOWN THIS WALL." You need to be neutral when you observe things, AND DON'T GIVE PEOPLE CREDIT JUST BECAUSE YOU LIKE THEIR POLITICAL BELIEFS. That's what I do. I am a Democrat, BUT I STILL WILL NOT DENY REAGAN HIS PLACE IN HISTORY AS A VERY GREAT PRESIDENT
Not sure what you mean by giving people credit because you like their personal beliefs. Yes, GHW Bush failed to follow Reagan's major policy themes--especially making the stupid deal with democratics of raising taxes now for a spending cut later. That's why I voted for Perot--I figured that would help give Clinton a win but without a majority. But I digress. I just remember the Reagan speech as being quite good, and would love seeing if my memory is correct.
Clinton beat Bush by a fair margain in 1992, despite trailing both George HW Bush and Ross Perot in earlier. He rebounded greatly after both the debates and the DNC, and promised to bury the old Democrat politics used by guys like Jimmy Carter. He was a Centrist, and not a liberal. He advocated for Third Way policies and sought bi-partisan compromises
Wow, HOW MANY HOURS A DAY DO YOU SPEND SUCKING SEAN HANNITY'S PENIS? I'm not saying that Reagan was a bad president at all, BUT BILL CLINTON WAS A HELL OF A PRESIDENT.
What proof do you have to back your claims. His affair with Lewinsky? Believe or not, even Reagan's main advocate to this day, Rush Limbaugh, did adultery too. As did Clinton critics Newt Gingrich, Bob Livingston, Laura Schlessinger and Mark Sanford. Read the New York Daily News archives for many of these confirmed reports, Do you by chance think Clinton a weasel, while these five republicans are just good people who made poor mistakes? YOU NEED TO GROW UP AND ACCEPT REALITY, YOU DUMB-ASS.
I'm talking about your argument about Clinton being the second worst president ever, DUMBASS. I ALSO WAS MAKING FUN OF YOU FOR YOUR STUPIDITY AND PREMEDITATEDLY COUNTERED AN ARGUMENT YOU MIGHT HAVE MADE
I certain DO KNOW WHAT I'M SAYING. ARE YOU TO STUPID TO REALIZE THAT YOU WERE RUDE FOR PREACHING BS IN THE FIRST PLACE. STUPID SHITS, LIKE YOU, MAKE ME LAUGH
This speech was obvious a rhetoric only. Reagan had previously stated that the nation had exceeded Jefferson's use of big government. Reagan here looks more exhausted than he usually did when he spoke (even for a healthy 81 year-old). Clinton really put a damper on the Republicans this year. He was a far better speaker than Dukakis or Mondale ever were, and he distanced himself from the Left Wing-partisian politics of Jimmy Carter. After the 1992 DNC, Clinton took the lead in the polls
This not a great speech on Reagan's part al all. He looks exhausted and is stuttering. This speech is not at all one like one of the jubilant speeches he had given when he lived in the White House. This speech only shows that he probably thought deeply the end of his policies where coming. I will not lie, he did give some motivating speeches, BUT THIS IS NOT ONE OF THEM AT ALL
True, BUT HE WAS AN OLD MAN WHEN HE ALSO TOLD GORBACHEV "TEAR DOWN THIS WALL." This is definately not the same Reagan who gave that fiery speech in Berlin.
The speech Bentsen made in 1988 was directed to fellow VP Candidate Dan Qualye. He said "Senator, I served with, I knew Jack Kennedy, Jack Kennedy was a friend of mine.

I agree. But It was due to his age that made him act like this. He was 81 at this time.

But still a great speech. We all want you back Reagan.

True, BUT HE WAS AN OLD MAN WHEN HE ALSO TOLD GORBACHEV "TEAR DOWN THIS WALL." This is definately not the same Reagan who gave that fiery speech in Berlin.

He always had a way with poking jokes at himself to make the other person he was talking about an idiot. RIP Ronnie!!! :)
