The speech Bentsen made in 1988 was directed to fellow VP Candidate Dan Qualye. He said "Senator, I served with, I knew Jack Kennedy, Jack Kennedy was a friend of mine. Senator, you're no Jack Kennedy." Reagan is not at all confident. In the speech, he said he utterly rejected the views that the economy was weakening and later flip-flopped by saying "let's not dismiss our current troubles." You can argue his mentality was weakening, but the functioning part of his brain knew it was over.

He knew Clinton had it won. He does not at all look or act confident that the Republicans will maintain control over the White House. In his mind, the New Dealer he had been before he got involved with Nancy told him his continued policies had messed up and it was over. He's also borrowing lines Lloyd Bentsen made in an 1988 debate. He changed his political tone a little too, as you'll see if you watch the entire speech. He talked about the need to strengthen education and health care.

@Claronium780 you say he's over-rated? well, all he did was build up the military, create 20 million new jobs, lead to the end of the Cold War, increase the real wages of the middle class, cut taxes from 70% to 28% while INCREASING the amount the Fed Govt recieves, cut unemployment nearly in half, ditto inflation ( 14% to 5-6% ), and interest rates ( 20% to 8% ).

@SniperMaske you can SAY he's over-rated, but look at the stats i previously mentioned.

also, he was a game changer. before Reagan, all democrats were calling themselves liberal, and the nature of the beast was to grow govt. after Reagan, dems were split with most calling themselves moderates, and the nature was to cut govt. and rely on the private sector. that and the tax rates coming down from 70%...he changed the dynamic...throw in the IDEA of winning the cold war, he's the man.

2nd, i'd like you to look up the violent crime rate associated with Crack vs Cocaine. Cocaine is more of a 'personal' demon. most victims are the users. Crack is more dangerous, w/worse ingredients, and has a higher amount of violent crime committed associated with it, stealing to afford it, etc.

drugs are bad...all of them. you're stretching it to blame this on Reagan.

Yup he built up the military, cut discretionary domestic spending on the politically weakest Americans, "created" 20 million new jobs that paid mostly low wages, gave huge tax cuts to the rich, raised taxes on the middle class in 1986 from 11% to 14%, unemployment fell but the Fed minimum wage was never raised (Business men were Happy), cut inflation & interest rates but gave us the Saving & Loans Crisis>and he lead to ending the Cold War (we agree but 2 what extent is debatable)

unemployment...cut

taxes...cut

jobs...20 million...good paying jobs.

military...strengthened

cold war...won.

as for Central America, the Cold War didn't do that...500 years of exploitation, started and mainly carried out by Spain for about 300 years to 400 years ago. they set up economic systems where there was no middle class. just the few rich and the very many poor.

as far as Native Americans in the US...some were mistreated. ALL were not. many assimilated ( Choctaw, Chickasaw, etc ). many Americans were trying to help them.

hitler rounded up people and put them in camps. he then, when the war got too tough, began to actively exterminate them. you have half a knowledge of history...enough to get twisted.

Just before he said this, Reagan said that a Democrat's "change" message could only be trusted if "they ever quoted a passage of Lincoln and meant it." He is not the same jubliant speaker here as he was in the 1980's. Even in this portion of the speech, he appears to be exhausted, dazed, and stuttering. I think it's clear he sensed the end of the Reagan Era was coming This is not the Great Communicator at his best. He was a good speaker

Not sure what you mean by giving people credit because you like their personal beliefs. Yes, GHW Bush failed to follow Reagan's major policy themes--especially making the stupid deal with democratics of raising taxes now for a spending cut later. Clinton beat Bush by a fair margain in 1992, despite trailing both George HW Bush and Ross Perot in earlier. He rebounded greatly after both the debates and the DNC, and promised to bury the old Democrat politics used by guys like Jimmy Carter. He was a Centrist, and not a liberal. He advocated for Third Way policies and sought bi-partisan compromises

This speech was obvious a rhetoric only. Reagan had previously stated that the nation had exceeded Jefferson's use of big government. Reagan here looks more exhausted than he usually did when he spoke (even for a healthy 81 year-old). Clinton really put a damper on the Republicans this year. He was a far better speaker than Dukakis or Mondale ever were, and he distanced himself from the Left Wing-partisian politics of Jimmy Carter. After the 1992 DNC, Clinton took the lead in the polls
