It is explained in one of the novels (I'm almost certain that it was Better than Life). The tale told in this scene was a lie made up by Rimmer so that Lister didn't think that he was pathetic.

I beleive the 'Series' as the seasons have been called are slightly tweaked alternate realities.Ive watched the entire run and started asking 'What happened to Jim and Bexley?','How would anyone have sex with someone as anal(in a bad way) as Rimmer?' etc....alternate realities is the only thing i come up with because,as far as Listers twins go,the Nanos rebuilding the Dwarf and its crew shouldnt have made a diff in their birth....

A great scene from a very underrated episode. Almost a whole half hour of just interaction between Rimmer and Lister, excellently written and excellently acted. It's a shame that Red Dwarf turned a bit silly in later years and just went for the cheap laughs, but there you go, that's only my opinion of course.

In the Red Dwarf book 'Better than Life', it reveals Rimmer's thought process during this scene, and it states that he is indeed lying.

He didn't have sex with Sandra, McGruder was his only conquest. The novel is written by both Rob Grant and Doug Naylor, so I guess it counts as canon!

Plus, there are some great grand laughing moments on series 7 and 8... strange thing is that this seem to have had way more funding than the previous seasons.. Guess it just became too expensive by the end... tho the 1-6 seasons are amasing as well, even being low bugdet.. the way I see it, they could have made it until the 15 season (or at least 10).. it's space stuff, its easy to change the scenario:)..

hmm im not sure about the movie tbh, I really didnt like series 8, especially the casting of katchanski and the really poor dialogue compared to the really clever stuff from the previous series(s). If there is a movie I really hope they take series 3-6 as prescendent, and do not have the (new) katchanski actress.

well a lot of people didnt like series 8 or 7 for that matter, personnally i like to remember that 8 and 7 are only half as good because rob grant left after series 6 ultimately this is why series 7 and 8 were worse, as for kachanski the original was better but the new one was ok. unfortunately if the movie does happen it will stil only be doug naylor doing the writing so it probably wont be as good as series 1-6, but these days movies arent as good as the series are they?!

I think Danny describes Rob as being 'the gag man'. Doug came up with the plot, Rob made it funny... I've nothing against series 7 and 8 or Chloe Annett, but I'll agree they're not like the other series which you can watch over and over and almost die laughing, no matter how often you see it. ;)

There's eight mate. And 2, 3, 4 and 6 are the best in my opinion though series 1 is under rated. Five's just a little too... well repetitive. Villan of the week anyone? 7 and 8 just don't feel the same with their higher budgets and computer SFX. Give me wobbly sets and Toys'R'Us sprayed grey anyday!
