Two completely different approaches to the instrument and to the chart. Neither is better than the other. They both speak musically and with great passion. Buddy moves me emotionally; Max moves me intellectually. They were dear, close friends, and both of them would think this endless debate about who-was-better is pointless.
@psychedeligoat i agree... max did really have a smooth way of playing. he took to solemn beats, not spastic beats. but not that buddy rich isn't good, it's just that max kinda introduced a new style of playin drums-which, of course, is fantastic. consider watching "fantastic max drum solo part 1&2" this is absolutely great stuff!
Hands down no comparison Rich has it all over Roach or anyone else of this time period, Articulation,Speed,Endurance,Chops,Style,Attack, the list goes on....
I liked that max had the bass line going on behind his solo... really kept the groove going, no doubt they're both amazing drummers, but max has the power to make you feel it, groove to it. found myself sitting back in awe when Rich went.. but when Roach went i couldn't help but move back and forth in my seat.
@renyTmaiL - I'm glad you pointed that out about the bass line behind Max. I read in a magazine recently that Max was the innovator behind having other instruments accompany him during his solos.
I've had this album since I first started playing drums as a kid 40+ years ago. It's priceless just because it's the two of them. I have to say, I've always like what Max did better on these tracks. And Max was a NICE guy.

No one can really match Buddy's speed. control, etc. It can't be done, or at least hasn't been done. That's not to say, however, he's the most musical drummer or must be revered above everyone else. I think these battles were kind of unnecessary, for the simple fact that Buddy pretty much lived to full-out solo and pull out all the stops, while Max and many others took an entirely different approach. Cool to hear, though.
When Max Roach died, WKCR played 24 hrs of his music. There was a song (I forget the title) where it was just Max & Buddy on the drums exchanging licks. Buddy would go & sound like the Energizer rabbit on uber steroids & then it was Max's turn. Max played just as fast but with several magnitudes of higher difficulty & technique. No matter how fast Buddy played, Max totally out did him. Anyone who can shoot me a message identifying the record, song or session, I'd be real thankful.
these two never should of een gon up against each other. They were both amazing drummers but in their own way.
rich was amazing technichally(rudiments and things like that). Roach was a sloppy drummer but one of the most influential. He was one of the few drummers that actually played music with the drums. They were both great, but in their own way.
It's funny to pair these two together, because in my mind, Max Roach is pretty much the image of minimalistic, melodic playing, while Rich is the image of technical trick playing basically.
well i guess i'm fool to say roach was the sloppy jazz drummer ha.....Buddy Rich had it all max roach struggles on this recording in jy opinion Buddy just plays at master ease
If anyone can find me a clip of Buddy making a mistake no matter how how subtle it is please post it Otherwise I cannot find anything Buddy ever played that wasn't perfect. Technically or from the heart.
Wow, could these guys play any different? One of the most musical drummers ever and THE most technically gifted drummer ever. They are equally entertaining.
I believe there are some extended track versions of this album on the itunes store.I have the original album but would be interested to hear these versions.Any thoughts!
There are 4 previously unreleased versions of songs on this disc. "sing sing sing" being one. "The casbah" being the 2nd. "bigfoot" the 3rd, and "limehouse blues" the last. Perhaps when I have the time I'll post them all! Thanks for listening.
Some new pics of buddy that I've not seen before.Great album also.Max's ideas on this album are so opposite to Rich's & yet they work so well together. Some of the tempos are scary. Thanks for sharing
Ah, i see.I remember seeing the cd version some years ago in the shops but missed these alt versions.must try & get my hands on the cd,cus i got the album as a gift from a drummer friend that did'nt want it would you belive,

I really get tired of Buddy's solos he plays the same rolls triplets and eighths. Max lets it breath and build with style an musicality.

I'm really enjoy the comments on this video! You can certainly see who values chops over feel and vice versa.
Personally I prefer Max's playing. Serious tech lovers should check out Joe Morello: technique, sensitivity and humility all in one.
