My friend Brandon introduced me to Firehose who was introduced by a guy named Fernando who was way into cool music. It led me down one of the best musical paths ever. The Minutemen, Sonic Youth and so on. I loved all of Firehose's records and wore the cassette tapes out. I never saw them live as they had broken up by the time I wanted to see them. But I have seen Mike Watt play many times. I sit in Ohio as I write this. Thank you to Ed, George and Mike for the soundtracks to my life.
for me , when i heard this 1st time was a trip down A1A
melting keys dropping on my toe, i became half man half metal man....went over to the st augustine wax museum....left ..and went & saw the WRONG movie , "natural born killers"
ha ha
left went to a state park and laid underneath the pine trees swayed by the wind and just watched them move above me for hours
The sun was just coming up and was creating some crazy and gorgeous patterns being filtered in the room through stained glass. All night the intercoms had been blasting the local college radio (WRAS, Atlanta) throughout the home - and at that moment in the tub "Understanding" was played by the DJ. Wow. I'll always remember that feeling. Of course I bought the LP that day and would see fIREHOSE perform ten or so times before I finished high school. Never spoke to either older girl again.
(I swear I'm not that school and few crazy things like that have happened to me since - but that's what happened...). Anyhow at a quarter before six that morning I escaped the two and went into the master bathroom and laid down in the spa-like tub to get some rest. Far from feeling like a stud I instead felt kind of confused and overwhelmed - all of this came from who knows where and the sex I never saw coming. I was totally passive in the whole thing, not that I wanted it to stop.
MY "UNDERSTANDING" STORY IN 4 PARTS - WARNING - NOSTALGIA!! The year was 1989. I was a freshman in high school and was 14 years old. One Friday night in April I lied to my folks and slept over at a friend's house whose parents were out of town. Of course we got pretty wasted and eventually I ended up in the master bedroom essentially being "used" by my friend's 17 year old older sister and her friend. (More to follow)
Always loved this tune. That bass line flows and pulls me along. Great pics too. I got a chance to meet George H. and he was the nicest guy. A big influence on my drumming too. Thanks for posting.
i met him once too as he was drumming for red krayola and got a standoffish vibe from him -- had the feeling he thought i was gay and trying to pick him up...or maybe he just didn't want to be bothered.

Amazing band, they were!! Glad I got to see them as much as i did back in the day.
I've probably got 50-60 'hose / WATT / minutemen gigs that i've converted to DVD if anyone's up for trading.
Been filming gigs for about 18yrs and have thousands on my site. Email me for my website info...
