Gei-sha means "art person" a woman who entertains with music & dancing. They are NOT prostitutes. Women were barred from Kibuki on account of prostituting themselves during the Tokugawa shoguns and today men still play womens roles. Don't look for prostitutes here.

@aellarex: Yes, Geisha are art person, but in this case, Oiran is prostitute. Visually, the diference is in girdle, belt. The Geisha's girdle has the tie in back.

@culturapopjaponesa Oiran/Tayu wear much more elaborate Kimono than Geisha and Maiko and they also have more elaborate hair with many more ornamants.
