It's always best to learn by ear first. Most people who read music wish that they can play like that. However most people who play by ear wish they can read music so it's a catch 22

I don't agree with it being 'best' to learn by ear first. It highly depends on what your goals are. If you are going to classical route, sigh reading is a must. If you are just someone who wants to jam, play songs and perhaps produce then playing by ear proficiently will get you further.

I'm self taught and play by ear exclusively.

However the catch 22 you mentioned is absolutely correct. People who can sigh read and play a song never played before amazing me. I know professional pianists who wish they could jam like me and I am no way near as good on the keys as they are.
