That looks like shit and im hoping its more of a beta placeholder that is going to be polished later. I'll add it to the list of D3 disappointments (I have ran out of fingers and toes).
I'm glad you made a video highlighting this, as it's a very real problem. Another problem here though is something Einstein spoke of once. If you don't understand something enough to explain it swiftly and simply, don't explain it at all. Lol, this was painful to listen to. I know you understand it, but you took the long road. Maybe write notes next time before the commentary.
Why does everyone bring up "OMG THE PIXULZ" when it comes to talking about skill and such nowadays?! I think we all know its a game. D2 was legit with targeting but D3 shows blizzards gameplay integrity is now focused on moms credit card over the seasoned-veteran players.
For Example:
Would you get the same thrill say playing CoD/Halo if you shot 3 feet above his head and still got a head shot? Or if you actually laid it directly on your enemies fat pixelated head?
The bigger issue is not being able to move if using a ranged skill or weapon. You click-to-move in the diablo games, and if you click to move to an empty space but the too-large hit box has you targeting a mob instead, you will attack rather than moving. I never noticed this on my barbarian, but when playing a wizard it started really driving me crazy. It really is a pretty big issue if you can't move when you want to!
This really isn't as big of an issue as people make it out to be. Doesn't need as much skill? Come the fuck on, since when the ability to click on a bunch of pixels is some huge indication of skill.
@Rennaaa It is a big issue, if you are fighting against an elite monster, boss, or whatever and you want to use a certain skill on that one monster that will stun him or debuff him, you might hit a wrong target and fuck you over.
You should make a Thread somewhere on official Blizzard forums to pin-point out this issue, because its serious. You are Real Beta Tester - Great work!
"You don't require to have as much skill as before..."?
In my opinion, the skill checks in most games, including this one, should be the wise selection of character skills, correct gear, clever use of game mechanics and so on. NOT the ability so precicely click on specific pixels on the screen, maintain 400 apm and lightning fast reflexes.
just wondering why you'd wanna send your arrow flying right next to the enemy. Doesn't make any sense.
Further, you're talking about issues with multiple targets, but I could see you just fighting one enemy at a time. That just didn't prove anything related to multiple targets
Yes its probably a little bit big but this game isnt like d2 where everyone used spam aoe skills like bh, fb, bliz, orb, ww, and traps. I dont see this as a big problem at all. I actually dont see how this can effect ACTION gameplay. Its made to be played FAST so they try to be more forgiving so everyone doesnt use aoe skills all the time because its harder to aim.
hey.... this sucks :/ + i saw that wow players will have a diablo 3 for free... sooo i hope diablo wont be another wasted by easy control and flooded by kids :/
@OrtyCZ WoW players only get D3 free if they payed for a full year of WoW. Its not like every WoW player gets it free, and they paid for a year of WoW they will probably be playing that more anyways because they paid for it and got D3 free.
@jamesh2594 Well its not really, it basically means you may hit monsters that you are not aiming at all. So it could be hard to prioritize certain monsters in a pack if this problem exists, stop looking at it from an easy mode point of view.
yep i'd also prefer the box to be smaller. i guess it is ok for smaller target that the box is bigger because otherwise it could be annoying to target them. if iam not accurate i should perform worse and miss sometimes. it was true in d2 and it was ok.
I think what you are doing here is really good, don't get me wrong. It's just that I get your point quite fast so there is no need to explain it that thoroughly in my opinion. Keep it short and simple!
Good video, but would like to see you testing it in other situation. For instance get a bunch of monsters and see if it's hard to target the one that is in middle etc. Maybe it works in a different manner when there's not just an empty space behind.
Seems fine to me: there's no point in trying to fire into an empty space adjacent to the enemy. I expect that if 2 enemies are near, the "sticky targetting" will always target the closest enemy to the cursor, so resolution isnt impared. The idea here is for the character to interpret the click logically as in "attack that target", not literally as in "attack in that direction", and it's what I'd want it to do.
The only problem with your comparison is that in Diablo 2, characters were way bigger than in D3, so if the same 'spot on' target system was to be used here, it would have been more challenging. But this true only for people who aren't used with a mouse, and I can't think of many PC users not being used with a mouse.
looks bad to me.... made to be easy for noobs perhaps... but they need to get some skill, not be handfed... and it also cause messups and innacuracies for the pros that we are. Definitely needs to be tightened right up! Very nice useful video.
Oh yeah, and I have wondered myself, WHERE is the gauntlet or other cool cursor?! Forget that crap mouse cursor.... =\ it's a disgrace... hopefully that's just in the beta.
@Frejborg not really, its the same in WoW and its perfect this way. Ever played Aion or SWTOR currently ? Then you would know how shit it is to dont have an invisilbe hitbox around your cursor or NPC. Its really nearly unplayable especially for PvP when things moving fast. If there are 2 mobs you will target the one which your mouse cursor is closer to and I think it will be the same in D3, perfect.
@crusher143 WoW combat isn't as fast paced as Diablo's is. The more fast-paced the combat, the more important accuracy and targeting is.
Anyway my first post is just an impression based on this video. I for one do not lay down judgements set in stone damning everything that isn't just exactly how I might think it should be. I haven't played Beta or the real game of course, so I don't know for sure!
I am very confident that D3 is going to be the best ARPG ever made by far. Cant wait
@crusher143 Your logic is undeniable. Comparing third person MMO combat to an isometric point-click game is perfectly valid. . ./sarcasm off
Seriously, stop being a damned fanboy and actually pay attention to what the video is pointing out. If you still think that the hit boxes don't need to be adjusted to be more accurate and compensate for ranged classes then you're either inexperienced with this sort of game or you're just dense.
Blizzard themselves has said that they want players to be able to pick out different unit types within a group and be able to identify them, in order to tactically win a battle.
It's the main reason they toned down the special effects (was way too messy b4 & too much mindless clicking with no forethought), and they made the decision to go with a painterly backdrop so that the characters stick out more. D3 is a whole different beast than even its predecessor.
@Frejborg It's not necessarily bad for a game to be newb friendly early on, but punishing skilled players for tactical game play is counter-productive to the natural progression one makes throughout a game. The mere fact that this invisible hit box conflicts with precision shooting as a ranged class and one can't single out a mob within a tightly packed group (this game has hordes of monsters mind you) should tell any gamer with some sense that it's flawed.
this looks quite intentional as oppose to be inaccurate for easy targeting purposes. I dont see it as a problem unless you prove it wrong on a very large groups of mobs. Also in d2 mobs used to come mindlessly as a big line up that was favouring the direction based spells which I didnt see it quite often in most beta videos yet.
First off, does it apply in PvP as well? Kind of interesting having a game like this without skill shots! Not bashing anything just curious. I can see it working very well in certain situations. It also kinda seems like they where trying to idiot proof it. However I could potentially see it making it harder for some of the more elitists. I would still need to see it on a large group of mobs, like if a mob gets really close to you while your long ranging another, is gonna switch automatically?
Your pretty much proving you own point, they have a larger hit box therefore you can hit them even if your cursor is not ontop of them. if the add didnt glow and you shot and killed them, then theres a problem but since your cursor is still in his hit box then theres a reason for it.
Yea, it seems like it is a very large targeting box. I can see why they have done it that way but it does seem a bit... forced. Like people don't know where they are targeting. I really don't like it. Makes the cursor look floaty and not at all accurate compared to the shots fired. I love the aiming aspect of projectiles in Diablo and this certainly takes that away.
great job, through the beta, I only hope that blizzard have some kind of department where you can receive some kind of feedback to all these aspects and this will let them think twice, not just based on their in-house testers solutions.
well, did you experiment with this on large groups of mobs then?
thats where you should test this, if you're concerned about that :)
on single targets it's kinda making it easier, but i can see how it could mess up in certain places. but i think that was an issue in D2 also in some places.
Like for the work but Dislike for the thing showed.

I am guessing that they will reduce box range with the difficulty ergo harder the difficulty level in game smaller the box.
But that is just mine guess.

They need to fix that.. We are pc player, we play with a MOUSE. We don't need big console hitbox with auto-aim...
