I once woke up to two alarms going off and screamed "WAHHHHHHHH WHAT ARE THESE NOISES?!?!" before skanking in my bed. I wasn't even thinking of this song until I did it.
I saw them at Toad's Place in New Haven last year (which is the worst venue ever, in my opinion) and Dicky's voice was SHOT, so Chris Rhodes and Johnny Vegas picked up most of the slack.
I don't think they can be compared since Streetlight Manifesto can't really be called Ska since it encompasses so many different genres and the Bosstones are pretty definitively Ska-Core; occasionally drifting more towards one of those parts. I love them both.
I'm not really calling Streetlight or the Bosstones ska, although I classify them both as ska. But still. Mike Soprano and Chris Rhodes are both two of the best trombone players I've heard, no matter what genre of music they play.
Really ska is a combination of several other genres to start with, so even though the bosstones often integrate a little more punk or a little more hardcore than say...streetlight manifesto or catch 22 or whoever, i still put them in the ska category. its not nearly so cut and dry as what some people seem to want to make it.
They aren't one of the originals, you would have to go way back to the likes of Desmond Dekker, Prince Buster and Laurel Aitken for that. They aren't even close to being one of the "true ska originals"
I do like The Bosstones though.. well some of their stuff anyway.
Devil's Night Out and More Noise and Other Disturbances are both great albums. (and clearly their best work)
When I said originals, I meant American/UK Ska originals. Them, Madness, and a few other bands really brough ska into the UK and US scene during the 70's and 80's. While Desmond Dekker and all of the Jamaican dance hall acts really did start it. Bosstones only started in the early 90's, and while they are awesome, I don't think they can be called "originals".
They are considered original because they were the first Ska-Core band. in a sense they paved the way for harder, more metal-based ska. for that reason. they are not original pioneers in the Revival movement like Dekker. Madness, or Atkin. Its more like, they are the original band to mix such metal roots in their music
so sad to say is from Pay Attention where The Bosstones drifted closer to hardcore and had less of the ska essence in their songs. But every other album is ska-ed up to the limit.

what dvd is this from anyone know?

It's from an online show they did. Notice how Ben Carr isn't dancing? That's proof that it's not a show.

chris rhodes is a god, only rivaled in his trombone skills by mike soprano
punkskabassist87 3 years ago
To be honest, Chris totally crushes Mike. Chris's trombone skills are tied with Mike's, but Chris owns with the rocking vocals.

That top paragraph is irrelevant. They created Ska Core. Nuff Said.
Jayguy851 3 years ago
yes and there's nothing wrong with ska core.. I enjoy it as much as the next guy.
I would still prefer to keep my ska and my punk separate any day though.

I agree with you! They aren't originals but they are still amazing. The specials and Desmond Dekker are originals.

the specials were just copying Jamaicans, wat makes them any better then the bosstones?
