Its a full bodied muppet suit that was first used in the third season and named after the man dancing inside, Graham Fletcher. Who, by the way, was a former Royal Ballet dancer that worked with Jim Henson in other full bodied muppet suits.
Actually, the Muppet Show was a variety show. it wasn't specifically for children. The kids had Sesame Street. This show was on prime time. They knew adults would be watching this as well. Plus, you don't have to dumb down a show just to be entertaining to children. I watched this when I was little. I got to know most of the musical artists, actors and actresses from this show.
