They were launching the missile with that button which Fry had pressed. Him being the stupidest person on earth he missed a button. Something so stupid that some people consider it funny.

Only someone that idiotic would miss a button like that when it is so close. I have a friend who cracks up hysterically at it when he watches it. It may not be funny to you, but it is to some people. If you seek more meaning in it, go right ahead. I have nothing other to say than it is simple comedy.

Exactly what was the point of having him miss the launch button? Did they need to make the episode a certain length and were 3 seconds short or something? Or did Fry's voice actor mess up and say that while recording and they just left it in and put this on the show when it happened? Either way, if you really think about it, this is the most pointless thing I have ever seen in any cartoon anywhere.

@RyanDaRizzle Sure it wasn't necessary, but my take on the joke was rather in the camerawork, rather than it being just a "stupid joke" as @eric4110 said (though I do partially agree with him, for sure).

In many other (particularly older/80s sci-fi films with poor scripts), you'll have the camera zoom into the launch/self destruct/whatever button, as the person goes to press it, building tension in the scene. Fry missing the button is a silly release of that tension.
