I have uploaded another version of me playing Syrinx live on my channel. I play this piece very often, and have many videos of it- will upload some other live performances of it too.. for you to compare..it is slightly different every time of course! (FYI when I recorded Syrinx in the TV studio I was exhausted -on the road touring with my baby!)
Sometimes playing in a TV studio can be nerve racking. Did she have time to practice there to hear herself. Was it a morning program. Many variables. but I agree about the vibrato. Shaky and uneven.
Nice. Vibrato is OK, just some of the note endings. It's called a "terminal vibrato", e.g. Louis Armstrong uses it, but not commonly heard in classical where the vibrato is usually in the middle of the note then trails off into a vibrato-less fade kind of ending.
Interesting. I was told the same legend but with a twist. Syrinx leaps into the river and is transformed into some reeds that Pan then takes up and begins to play.
If you read the score and listen, she's accurate and expressive at the same time. She has rubato where Debussy says. Yes the vibrato is wide but still tasteful to me. Very beautiful overall. Some of you who hear a problem with her tone, I think it's her microphone. It's way too close. Don't do that to a flute!
I love the Syrinx and most of Debussy's work. It is so mysterious and something in between happy and sad I think. It could even sound scary depending on your imagination. What other mysterious classical music would you recommend?
I think her vibrato was violent because of nerves if anything and the way she interprets it is fine im not particularly keen on her ending or odd rubato in places but she seems to be doing her best mind you, most people expect better from a proffessional flautist
quelle joliei femme, l interprétation est bonne, certains passages sont trop appuyés comme au début, mais chacun son interprétation, cette pièce est libre....bravo..Stéphane ROGER Flute solo
I had to breathe in an inappropriate place as well, but I worked it in with the previous phrasing. Debussy never even wrote in the breath marks, another composer did that. It's the kind of piece that its up to the musician to interpret where to emphasize certain emotions - I don't think breathing in a place that's different from the music is a major issue.
It is a wide range vibrato that is not well supported, especially toward the end of each note, where it notably causes the loss of tone and pitch control. NOT something to emulate when you are ending a phrase and especially when you make a diminuendo at the end of a phrase. I didn't mind the interpretation as it was very musical, just the way the sound is produced and shaped is very different (that may be what is "sensational" to some).

i think that you can't play this piece without vibrato, but it must be soft... looking for the harmonics...

I would agree that her vibrato is very harsh. It almost interrupts the actual note she is playing, almost like a stammer?
However, apart from that I'd say that was a great performance of a difficult piece.

She has a "different" vibrato but the interpretation is beautiful. Also her low notes are really nice.

she breathes in wrong places...

I don't like her vibrato. It's too hard, almost violent.

This is called over-sentimentalism... Pseudo-classical artists like Andre Rieu and Richard Clayderman love it.
I think she is one of them.
