Not sure about that: the fact is a lot of innovative early 80s music relied on state of the art technology which was difficult to re-create in the studio. It might not have sounded as good played live. That was certainly the case when New Order did a live version of Blue Monday on Top of the Pops in March 1983. It didn't sound very good.

They did look a dissolute bunch who looked a good 10 years older than they actually were compared to the young and fresh Miss Kenyon. Their suits weren't too hot either.

This song changed Heaven 17 from being a cult synth band. They wouldn't have lasted around if this hadn't been a big hit.

Of course the 3 members of Heaven 17 were about the same age as Carol Kenyon, but in 1983 it was fashionable to dress older than you actually were by wearing suits, etc, whereas these days most singers like to appear younger than they are.

also i have the song on 3 occasions of TOTP from that year - 21/04/83, the 1000th edition, and this one from the Christmas special - which i havent watched so far and but even the 1000th edition wasnt shown on uk gold of that matter - also i have got a number of episodes on dvd in some black-slated cases.
