  • @kulkraghav yeah I felt bad for her when he said that... I'm sure it made her feel small almost like she shouldn't be in the same room with him let alone be playing together. I'm sure it's true that he probably just heard of her but he could have said something like... "I'm hearing so much about you" or just said thank you to her and left it at that

  • That was rude of him to say "And I just heard about you..." Major dislike

  • Just pure awesomeness !!!

  • Wow that just blew me away!!! Awesome

  • Melody Gardot just blew my mind.

  • She most be the most sexy artist in the world. She is sexy, but she becomes more sexy on the way she sings.

  • 10 peoples dislikes good music....???

  • Think about a piano player learning the guitar lying on her back and imagine how a singer could be this gorgeous and talented. If I were with her, all I would want is for her to sing one song over a glass of great wine, once a night. Everything else would be a side dish.

  • where can I buy this Video? is this a TV programe?

I don't understand Melody's version is not contained in the album "River" .

  • When you're thrown into the ocean without knowing how to swim, it's not as big a deal if you're a natural at it ;)

  • melody is a legend and is fantastic.

  • Man I love her! She is so talented!

  • thanks ssnipes ... seems like a good download .... thank you for the heads up.

  • i think herbie was a little rude when he said "i just heard about you"

  • @TheJazzStreet he was kidding. she said "i have heard a lot about you" which is a little bit random to say to someone who is a modern jazz legend when you just got in it 2 years ago. dont get me wrong, i am a BIG fan of melody's...

  • @ssnipes - I think if anyone made an awkward comment, it was her...she's talented, but like you said, had been in the "game" only for a few years, when the other (along with Wayne Shorter) is a a true multi-genre legend in the very sense of the word, with a career spanning all the way to the early 1960's...

  • Herbie ... release this song so I can buy it and millions of others could as well ...

  • @wsg909 actually, i found it on beemp3.com for free download. you have to search for Melody Gardot and it comes up as a listing "Herbie Hancock/Melody Gardot". it is listed as being on later with jools holland but it is this recording...

  • lucky girl to play with these stellar musicians.

herbie and wayne are so divine masters.

  • YEAH AGAIN ANOTHER "GOLDEN GIRL " COMING TO JAZZ. PLEASE LISTEN TO TINA. THE SHADES ARE NOT THERE WITH MS G AS WHEN YOU HEAR TINA',.TO JONI'S WORDS FATIQUE AND RESIGNATION.TINA ROCKS. HOPING SHE WILL CONTINUE TO FOLLOW THIS PATH.

  • From fear into fearlessness, obsurity to stardom, she touches gentleness like few others because she lived at death's door. She brings us a treasure of otherwordly nuances, a taste we all may one day savour.

  • @FrancescoGuardi @naggers123 @boojum and others...

yeah... i'm sure when 'they' envisioned this composition they were thinking "how can we do it better than joni and tina"?... man, there will always be critics - fine. and they will always miss the point!

  • @bluegazoo I agree with you. So mutch titles have been interpretated a lot of time in different ways (for example "Love me or leave me" or "Body and soul"). It is a new challenge and why an artist should not attack it? Excuse my bad english!

  • I love real music!! x

  • Melody by name melodious by nature - what a beautiful voice. I do agree though - she could have 'owned' the lyrics a little more - just an observation not a criticism. And I agree with boojum - no one does it like Joni M - I mean who can stick the ending like Joni does? And let's not forget the musos around her - what a treat to see this - thank you!!

  • Nice job from everyone but Wayne is just OUTSTANDING!

  • Guscaldas hipped me to this video and what tasty dope stuff Herbie is layin' out;

    Thanks Gus and eezlewax.

  • I like her voice, however I would enjoy hearing her "own" the lyrics. What made Tina's version so convincing is that she experienced a brilliant yet troubled Kingpin (a pioneer of Rock and Roll--check "Rocket 88") in her own life. As one musician said, "If you haven't lived it, it won't come out of your horn". This doesn't take anything away from the obvious talent of Ms. Gardot (I will listen to more), it just means that her version is inauthentic to the nature of the song.

  • She has the chops to sing with some of the best Jazz musicians in the world.

  • It DOES get KUUUU-LER: Herbie and Melody doing Joni Mitchell...at Abbey Road!

  • Such critics. This is absolutely eargasmic. You can say so-and-so did it better, and you know what? To each their own. I love all the previous versions, but this is absolutely fan-fucking-tastic. To deter from that is absolute sacrilege.

  • Nice try but she really can't manage all of the subtle twists and turns that Joni deploys.

  • @boojum couldn't agree with you more. Gardot's own compositions are delicate enough to bring out those subtle nuances in her voice - she's simply not suited to take on Joni's raw emotion. This just sounds like a cover.

  • This goes to show how important music is to cognitive development. Music brought her back and look where she is today. yet music is the first thing 'they' cut in public schools. It should be as vital as reading writing and math. Music is all of those things!

  • prefer tina turner doing this, although melody does do a nice job

  • Maybe my favorite Joni Mitchell composition. A good version. I love Melody..and well, Hancock.... wonderful phrasings.

  • sublime

  • Amazing, i just recently became aware of Tina's version and this was my first time hearing of Melody Gardot but, i am now a new fan. Beautiful

  • delicious !!

  • Who needs Tina Turner after this?

  • @klausthemusician Enjoy the great diversity that we have, that's what it's all about.

  • @klausthemusician Me. Why Hancock did this song a second time with Gardot ? She is great with own stuff but this is disappointing. I even couldn't recognize her voice...

  • @FrancescoGuardi He might be seeing eller hearing something in the music and the artist you don't hear...

  • Melody's voice is sublime!...

I do prefure... (Herb & Tina Turner version!)

Tina's vocals, (for me) are, so much more hypnotic & filled with depth!!!

  • @Naturalllee I agree; Turner's voice is more layered and subtle, perhaps the years of experience provide the added depth

  • Beautiful!

  • awesome !

  • There's not much greater a compliment than being invited to play with these guys.

  • gimme back joni please.

  • Monsters really exists....

    No words..

  • i like this version better than the tina turner version. does anyone know if there is any way i can get this version?

  • such a great soundd

Herbie is so sexy and F*** THIS GIRL CAN SING!

  • Herbie Hancock is musical genius! And Melody Gardot omg pure beauty, both amazing musicians, what a gift to hear them together. What I would give to have even a quarter of this talent!

  • I'm sorry but you are way too much! way to amazing, wish i could call you cheri!! this sort of talent have to be celebrate...tanx for the gift of you...In return i'm giving you a jar full of star...

  • man, i'd die to have sung with those guys. i love the solos in this way better than the tina version- the sax lines are more... right. you know? yeah. : )

  • Its so cool how these guys respond in this situation. They don't hear 'Edith is his bed...' and she has gone ahead to the crescendo. You can HEAR them regrouping and then anticipating the belated verse...kinda waiting...and then giving up/giving in and guiding her back down. Its all so kind.

The sorrow is that she misses the crescendo also no? She must have felt this too or not?

    We'll get there!

  • It must be a great personal achievement for a musician to get to play with Herbie Hancock and Wayne Shorter.

  • o ya

  • oops, she missed the last verse! Ya know the part about the wires in the walls humming? Its kinda important because it

leads to the final message of the song, duh and the composition. Oh well, I like Tina Turners rendition more.

  • @Trubisha

I agree. Tina sings the shit out of the tune and the power in her voice and persona comes right out. And that last verse...

  • @Trubisha I you listen to what she said at the beginning of this song, two years ago she couldn't remember anything short term, nor could she speak. I'd say it's rather remarkable what amazing work she does now. So I'd cut her just a little slack on the lyrics ;).

  • @michaelteter

So true! I did consider that BUT, the big but is that, the final verse is the crescendo of the story and the musical composition...the deal breaker in the song...which Joni nailed. Broader comprehension problem?

To add to your sentiment, listen to what Hancock says even before they begin about 'compassion' and how kind they are, joking about being young. They noticed it too but they were very calm and generous. Bravo!

Nothing against Gardot...all the power to her! : )

  • When Herbie speaks his peace as in the beginning of this video there is deep truth and knowledge there. It captures his persona and spirit and it flows through his music and instrument. An instrument of love and peace. This is heavy shit here. Great tune. And how 'bout Wayne Shorter. What can I say?

  • I love River - the Joni letters CD as it came out. But this rendition by/with Melody Gardot is very nice nonetheless.

    Thanks for posting!

  • v cool.... music b the food

  • Tina Turner is nowhere to be found in a video doing this song. She was of course on the recording. Tina should do a jazz album.

That being said, Melody does a nice job here.

  • She is far better on her own songs, but she could sing the "Barney" song, and I would trip out! The problem here is that Herbie and the boys pretty much own this performance. Melody's just a pleasant aperitif.

  • good lord look at what she has over come yeah herbie has been around forever

  • Love Melody, but this is basically a copy of the Tina Turner version. The best, though, is Joni's own rendition, from the Shadows and Light album.

  • This womans voice is really really something special. she reminds me of peggy lee - that unbelievable tone and strength - although never going ooverboard and screaming. This is talent. wonderful

  • The Lord works in mysterious ways. May he bless you and keep you safe from harm for the rest of your life, so you continue to bless us with great music.

  • That was really a terrific cover of one of my all time favorite Joni Mitchell tunes..... Nicely done!

  • That wasn´t a good idea after all. Maybe came from some corp guys, as usual. I like her very much but after Tina´s version, this is unfair....

  • beautiful !

  • Does anybody knows who plays with Melody, Herbie Hancock and Wayne shorter ??

  • vinnie colaiuta!

  • Not my favourite female voice for this song but cool rendition all the same. Great to see the old masters at work!

  • I prefer the Tina Turner-version.

  • agreed, but this is still nice.

  • Many thanks for posting, that was great.

  • Nice to see the Mighty Steve Pearce bashing the tree!!

  • Just discovered Melody Gardot - she is truely awesome - I like her music and style - and this song with the legendary Herbie Hancock is beautiful...she says she does not see herself as a jazz singer in a different interview I saw once which is an amazing statement...I think she's great whatever she thinks she is !

  • joni mitchell's song

    loving it !!!

  • BEAUTIFUL

  • what was the 'joke' he made when he met her? i couldn't hear.

  • "I just heard about you"

  • Melody Gardot is a true jewel. I listened to George Michael, Joni Mitchel and Tina Turner all singing this song and this is my favorite. She has such a way of bringing peace to me when I listen to her.

She literally makes me feel the music she sings and experience it. My husband, my 4 year old and I really enjoy her music. Its funny, she says that music heals the nural pathways in your brain...when I listen to her music it is definately healing for me and relaxing. She is unbelievable.

  • Melody Gardot told me she loved me once... I will never forget that moment, nor this video!!! Amazing!!!!

  • Not to worry Melody he will never forget your name now.....however you just might forget his...!!!!

  • Anyone else hear a likeness to Carly Simon on this track?

  • lol...that doesn't sound like a good thing

  • I like how she handled herself when he made that joke. quite unneccessary of him but whatever.

on some level i do feel 'this accident' is capitalized on so much.

  • @TCt83067695 in spanish we said .... "se paso de verga" ohh c´mon im herbie hancoock, a jazz music master ... and who are you .. just a girl whit a great voice.... im sure that herbie likes her voice ... she is awesome

  • @TCt83067695 Her music speaks for itself regardless of the accident.

  • @TCt83067695 I for one am glad that she was able to take a tragedy and turn it into something very wonderful for the ears instead of feeling pity for herself and resorting to the bottle.

  • @TCt83067695 I agree about the accident bit, but it's kinda also wrong to say "hey, tone it down a bit".

  • @WirlWind494 it's not as good as tina's

  • @Noidal77 Not as good as Norah's

  • @ralphbernabe

The joke Herbie was making was about his age as compared to her age. He brings it up all the time in interviews. He's a nice cat.

  • @TCt83067695 It seems to me that you don't know very much about Herbie Hancock. If I was her, he could say whatever he wants. He's one of jazz's greatest innovators. What is Melody Gardot? A great musician, but not a pioneer.

  • i can't believe ppl are comparing this version to George michael's. I've listened to most mentioned here already and this in my opinion is the best. soulful enough that its not too much. only the essense of the song is portrayed here. and that's how Melody likes to sing.

i always called her my white corinnee bailey rae and its nice to see HER video on the right.

And who else feels the dude was just talking at the beginning for absolutely no reason; with nothing to say but talking anyway.

  • The dude? Herbie Hancock? Yeah he was rambling on, as elderly do. But one of the finer elderly folk in the musician world. George Michael covered this? O_O Was unaware..

Melody is class though =) Loveable voice.

  • Stop down rating comments because you simply don't agree with the persons opinion, please. Everybody is entitled to musical taste, that's what makes music half the battle for gaining peoples interest and sharing your own like interests amongst others! Big hug now, come on. bring it in.

  • U r right, this is a J M-song. I wrote that the same arrangement had been already done with Tina. So u can compare, because the band plays the same - like a caraoke. May be she is good in her style - but not with this. I will forget this one soon. From the other hand, with Metheny, Pastorius, and Brecker Joni played a jazzy version - u can also see on utube. Sounds good. And ... George Michael's version is also respectable. That is all. And this is my opinion , nothing else.

  • Look, Man, Women,

This song arranged by Hancock first appeared featuring Tina Turner. Enterely the same but with Tina Turner. Which was much more better than this lady's voice, sorry. My problem with this version that I simply cant believe she sings.

That is why I dont understand how she could play together with such a good pianist as Hancock. And from the other hand: somebody took away from utube Tina's much more better version!

  • I agree with you ! You are right !

  • Look you - this is a Joni Mitchell song if I am not mistaken, not a Tina Turner song. Granted, Tina sings it wonderfully - one of the better performances I've heard of her - and I wouldn't say this is a perfect interpretation...but to call into question Melody's talent is a sign of ignorance. Her note choices and dynamics as a singer are a rare sign of great talent. If you can't hear that with the other performances of her, then you are simply not listening.

  • questions:

    1. Am I (or anybody) oblidged to have a lexical or any other kind of knowledge about this lady on the video?

    2. is it the question of anyt ignorence that i aver about this interpert of Joni's song?

because not, that is why I (pr others) can have my own opinion about it. I don t like "authority -kind" thinking. Even I respect e.g. Pat Metheny or Frank Zappa sometimes i dont like that they play. And it is ok. U can choose.

  • have to agree. But she seems cool and soulful though. Tina has 40 years on her, making her sound shallow in comaparison. Wayne is still sick on this. Live for him. Check Joni's live version from 75 on youtube- pure as crystal.

  • Yes! Joni's live version is awesome. And there is a Metheny, a Pastorius, a Brecker..

Brecker and Jaco 'overplay' the song (also the Black Crow) that i like and after that it is difficult to come back to sing, but it was nothing for Joni.

  • That's great music! I saw this ep 3 weeks ago and recorded it. This song was by far the best of all the music being played that night, it left me wanting more.I really think she should stay in the jazz realm.

  • She is incredibly sweet and talented. I can tell you one thing... I saw her live in a jazz festival here in Belgium, where Hancock, Shorter and Metheny were also playing. She was the first band (out of 3) to open the day as a support to Shorter.

Out of all the support bands that I saw in those 3 days, she was the ONLY one that got a standing ovation and was called back on stage (to the frustration of the organisers that wanted to keep a perfect time schedule).

  • I'd also like to hear a Nashville C/W version of this song! (The Shaft guitar licks were pretty cool too!)

  • Its great to see Herbie and Wayne. Herbie is always around but I havent heard to much of Wayne lately but he still kicks major butt

  • It's a Joni Mitchell's song (great song, one of my Joni's favourite). Herbie Hancock made a record called "River, The Joni Letters", which is an "hommage" to Joni Mitchell. In this record Tina Turner sings the song "Edith and the kingpin" (her version is superior to this one in my opinion)

  • U r right!

If somebody also could sing this well it was Geroge Michale and his arrangament. It is also worth to be listened to.

  • classy rendition of this classic tune. Her voice is as smooth as glass.
