old emperor, gorgoroth, dimmu and defiantely bathory were badly recorded...bathory were the ones to start it...they didn't have enough money for good sound quality so they used crappy equipment...so when their recordings came out, their sound quality was poor...thats why most black metal bands sound like that

true for most old school black metal. but today's black metal bands (new Gorgoroth, new Dimmu Borgir, Vesania, and Satyricon) are actually going for a more abrasive sound. Most of them like the roughness of the recordings because it gives it a little more brutality. But almost all of these bands are now more professionally recorded. Hence the latest Vesania, and Dimmu albums. Gorgoroth, Satyricon, and 1349, however, have stuck with the old school black metal sound.
