  • was sarah willis doubling first horn?

  • 10 dislikes must be to Dudamel's new haircut... I can't think of any other reason...

  • @sergen919 What the bloody hell does Gustavo's haircut have to do with his amazing talent? Nada!

  • Who is the other 1st trumpet (not Gabor Tarkovi) in this concert?

  • @SchwarzeDose21

  • What a spectacular music. Dudamel is a small man but what great he is in his conducting. Thank you for sharing this Video. Lovely.

  • Dudamel sucks.

  • @TsarBovov Maestro Dudamel is a genius: you are not. пошел на хуй!

  • @TsarBovov You, sir, are a total wanker.

  • @TsarBovov Sucks what you total wanker. Get a life.

  • @jslasher1 What are you attempting to say in simple English. It's all gibberish.

  • Dudamel cut his hair...

  • @SchwarzeDose21 First off, learn how to conjugate a sentence before you proceed to make a total arse of yourself.

  • GO TRIANGLE PLAYER!

  • Ah yeah, love the low brass <3

  • Gabor Tarkövi!!!!!!!! amazing

  • My God... this orchestra is really unbelievable, such a clarity of sound, such a professionality, in whatever they play... so German, so crystal clear, viva the Berliner :)

  • @avakrob You should also hear the Teresa Carreno Youth Orchestra of Venezuela.....all high school students!

  • @avakrob "so German" try listening to the Teresa Carreno Youth Orchestra doing this same piece with Dudamel conducting. You will say sooooo LATIN.

  • @padredemishijos12 What a stupid comment. There is nothing Latin about the performance by the Teresa Carreno Youth Orchestra under Dudamel. If you close your eyes you will hear the DSCH 12th performed with such a level of commitment that you might be listening to the best symphony orchestra in the world.

  • @jslasher1 What I mean by "latin" is the passion, intensity, emotion and sheer joy of life that you see in their faces, young, beautiful faces. You will not find that in any orchestra in the USA or Europe. Teresa Carreno Youth Orchestra under Dudamel is one of the best collection of musicians in the planet. I am trying to unravel this beautifull mystery.

  • @youngergermanpope Does anyone actually care?

  • SBYO/Dudamel performance of Moncayp's "Huapango" is also superior to the BPO/Domingo performance of the same work.

  • I prefer the performance done by "Teresa Carreño" Youth Symphony Orchestra, with Dudamel, much more exciting!1

  • @orovalleydude Me too!!

  • that's what i call a horn unison...

  • I am a Shostakovich NUT . . . but I haven't heard this symphony yet. This EXCELLENT recording convinces me that I HAVE to.

  • Timpani, Snare and BassDrum are absolutely exactly on time. Very nice!

  • BRAVO!!!!!!!

  • When Simon Rattle leaves the Berliner Philharmoniker, I wonder who would become the new principal conductor? I was thinking Barenboim or Dudamel? Opinions anyone? And where would Rattle go? Maybe to America? The New York Philharmonic maybe?

  • @elgarian497 He would be crazy to come to the US. In my opinion, Rattle is the best. Dudamel is having too much fun.

Rattle can go anywhere he wants. He is simply the BEST!!!!!!

  • @alejoeisabel haha, Dudamel definitely has a lot of fun at the podium and it shows! And I agree with you though, Rattle is the best conductor! He is definitely my favourite! If only he came to London more often and then I could actually see him live!

  • @elgarian497 Rattle is great but Dudamel is greater. A matter of opinion.

  • @alejoeisabel I'd have to disagree with you. Dudamel is the shiz.. He is young and he is completely passionate about what he does, not that Rattle isn't. If you can't have fun at what you're doing what's the point? A conductor that has some "fun" ~ i.e., passion is exactly what they need. The way they're playing speaks for itself!!

  • @LLJtbone What pray tell is a 'shiz'? If you can not elucidate in educated English please don't elucidate at all. Verstehen zie?

  • @jslasher1 Ok pray tell what rock have you been laying under? The "shiz" means politely the stuff. BTW, it is not your place to say what I can say or how jack....

  • @LJlovestbone This is not English class! Most if not all of the people making comments are "educated". Quit being a total arse and listen to the music.

  • @LJlovestbone It is an English class when you are unable to conjugate a single sentence. You should have typed "this is not an English class. Yes, most of those making comments are educated. You, however, are not. I have listened to the music several times. I have the conductor's score in front of me. The Berliner Philharmoniker performance pales in comparison to the performance by the Venezuelan Youth Orchestra conducted by Dudamel.

  • @LJlovestbone I don't live under rocks, mate. I live in the real world. The 'shiz' sounds like something concocted by some ignorant Yank. I may say whatever I like. Get used to it.

  • @alejoeisabel The first thing they will do if he comes to the US is to order him to undergo a circumcision. The Yanks are 'crazy' about such things.

  • @elgarian497 Why would anyone want to take on a conducting assignment in America? Too much politics.

  • @elgarian497 Rattle would become Dame Edna Everage's conductor in chief.

  • I have heard all performances of this, in my opinion, masterpiece. The performance that still holds its place is the one by Evgeny Mravinsky and the Leningrad Philharmonic. That performance was released in the West on many incarnations and is the one that still remains supreme BUT this attempt by Dudamel is excellent and I will buy it as soon as it is available. No one can predict what would become of this Venezuelan talent but he seems to know his Shostakovich very well. Thank you Gustavo.

  • @Neishapour +1k

  • There seem to be a lot of deps in... 3rd and 4th horn, 2nd oboe, etc.

  • Just because it's the BP, I'm not going to say that's good. The percussion looked lazy and the brass were missing beats, which is usually top notch..... look at the way the percussionist with the glasses turns the page of the score in disgust. For some reason they don't seem to like playing Shostakovitch. Their playing of the 10th at the Proms wasn't inspiring also. I feel there are so many younger orchestras around now, that deliver better value for money.

  • @pitbull2005 They play it better than most other orchestras....the low brass was excellent as was the clarinet player.

  • @GregHales

Yes maybe a little harsh. There's a high standard of playing, but then you expect high standards from them. I just feel, in the snippet we can hear, they just lack soul and emotion for Shostakovich. They are just too sterile.

  • Maybe he is a facsist. After all this is about the Russian Revolution. I'm sure Hitler would not approve that "his" orchestra play this piece by a Latono conductor. What has become of Germany, lol.

  • @pitbull2005 They don't play it well because of ideological reasons and historical as well.

  • @pitbull2005 One must first understand the social class of classical musicians in Germany. Music lessons are about ninty to 100 Euros per hour. To become a BPO musician, one's family must have invested 150,000 Euros in music education. That puts each musician in the bourgeois. They must hate playing Shostakovich who was a revolutionary and communist. In Venezuela, music education and instruments are FREE thank to the revolutionary government of Venezuela. The Venezuelans get it.

  • Simon Bolivar Youth Orchestra with Dudamel is 100% times more entertaining..

  • Dudamel is wonderful. Standing on the same spot as Karajan and others I wonder if Dudi gets his energy and drive from zen practice as Karajan did? No matter. He's got it and that's great for the audience, the music, and orchestra, alike.

  • What a great performance... the whole orchestra is truly top of the world, jaw dropping, phenomenal! The horns are of course my favorite. This is the first time I've seen Dohr use an 'assistant' or 'bumper'. Sarah Willis at that!!!

  • <3 the percussionists' banter from 1:08 to 1:15 (snare and bass drums)

  • @ctfamily40 Very unprofessional. They wouldn't have tried that under von Karajan.

  • @ctfamily40 Any performer in a professional orchestra who 'banters' during a performance should be 'sacked'. No more work, mates.

  • wunderschoene Musik!

  • Bravo!

  • Ausgezeichnet!

I must say, Berlin is one of my favorite orchestras now; even surpassing my long favorite, the Chicago SO. The CSO has lost that characteristic sound it once had when Herseth and Ridenour were playing principal, and orchestras like Berlin and Wien are more appealing to me now--although Pittsburgh is the closest to that old CSO sound I've heard and are my U.S. favorite; )

  • Great Balance throughout the orchestra! I love it. And Bravo Horns as always!

  • Tipically Shostakovich.... rsrsr

Great interpretation!!! Dudamel is amazing.... a proud for South America!!!!

  • does dudamel memorize all the music he performs?

  • Looks that way.

  • Not always.

  • That is the way they train then in Venezuela. Watch Venezuelans, Diego Matheuz, Christian Vasquez and Manuel Lopez Gomez conduct. No score. The saying in Venezuela is 'better to have the score in your head than your head in the score' Its just part of their training. AND ITS ALL FREE THANKS TO CHAVEZ

  • @alejoeisabel

Yes, when a youth orchestra in Venezuela has more commitment, more drive, better interpretation of a pieces and more excitement than one of the supposedly best orchestras in the world, it's time for them to go back to the drawing board.

The percussion at 29 seconds is pathetic....

Watch Christian Vasquez with the Simon Bolivar Venezuelan Youth Orchestra playing Mahler's 2nd Symphony and you can see how much the established orchestras have to do to catch up.

  • Why is it pathetic?

  • @stromskij

It's an aggressive piece and should be played as such. The timpani player seems to be afraid to hit the instrument, as is the case with the rest of the percussion.

The trouble with the BP is they know they are good, think they are good, but are not any longer.

  • They ARE good. :-)

  • @pitbull2005 Good comment. The BP timpanist is no where as good as that of the eighteen year old in the performance with the "Theresa Carreno" Youth Symphony Orchestra conducted by Dudamel.

  • @stromskij Because the percussion player is suffering from a case of the 'scheisse'. He's much to lazy to perform the score as written.

  • it has been started in Venezuela much time before Chavez. It's declining with Chavez.

  • @dainerflute Before President Chavez, no one ever heard about the Simon Bolivar Youth Orchestra. 80% of their budget come from Chavez. He plans to extend music to all Venezuelan children ie triple the music program. Viva Chavez

  • I have some Venezuelan friend that are from this musical method of teaching who don't share the same opinion. Many "ditadores" sponsored music, but we need to observe the oppression itself.

  • @dainerflute, The oligarchy cries opression whenever someone puts limits on their otherwise free reigns. Currently they are squaking because of tax enforcement, paying deliquent tax bills, enforcing minimum wages, and work safety standards. Plus they no longer run the show, Chavez does.

Chavez, Abreu, and Dudamel plan to expand music to ALL Venezuelan kids, from 300K to 1M, create the new man.

  • @AntonioStradivarius lighten up, the Central Bank of Venezuela has just signed an accord with "El Sistema" to support world travel for the youth orcestras of Venezuela. This Central Banker was a Chavez apointee.

  • @dainerflute My dear friend, it is irrelevant that El Sistema began before President Chavez was elected. What is relevant, however, is that the Bolivarian Revolution headed by Chavez, and FULLY supported the musicians, and more importantly their families. Remember, they come from the poorest families of Venezuela. That is why the Bolivars sound so great. Lets give credit to where it is due. Thank you Chavez.

  • @dainerflute WRONG, WHONG, AND A THOUSAND TIMES WRONG.

  • @padredemishijos12 Right, right and a million times right.

  • @FungoBoy Dudamel spends a lot of time studying a score before he performs. Check out Dudamel doing a talk about Mahler's Simphony No. 1, Titan. He is talking to a Salzberg audience.

  • Really! Have you had a chance to rehearse with them? it would be very interesting to see a video of their rehearsals

  • @FungoBoy He most certainly does.

  • I haven't seen Albrecht Mayer in the past few concerts... I'm guessing the Philharmoniker are going through a different personnel rotation this season? Perhaps he only plays certain subscription concerts? Not really sure how that works at the Berliner Phil. Does anyone have any ideas?

Of course, great performance, as always! The horns at around 1:30... wow!

  • I'm not sure how the rotation works. The orchestra gave 2 concerts in SF in mid-November and he played one and Kelly played the other.

  • mayer is in the states for a period of time. he was actually just at the new york string seminar at carnegie this past week.

  • Ahhh... That's right! I read about this in the NY Times just a few weeks ago. Completely slipped my mind.

    Thanks!

  • I've seen this concert on the DCH several times, love to see it come out on DVD/CD. It is excellent.

  • Absolutely phantastic. This might be a performance I would want to watch entirely at the DCH. My favorite orchestra and my favorite conductor of all times... :-)

  • Wonderful Dudamel!!

So excellent to see him here, with the Great Berlin Phil, followed him a long time, and I celebrate this moment by creating a playlist for him. And favourite and rate with all the stars....

    Congratulations!

  • Dudamel looks like Sir Simon from South... thanks for uploading this video~

  • Aaaah Gustavo Dudamel cut his hair!! How Great the horns are at 1:30...no words
