Thank you SO MUCH for including the lyrics in the info. It amazes me how many people don't do this and how annoying it is to go back and forth between two different sites. Well done!
I'm SO happy to hear that the generation coming up behind mine still loves this stuff... TO be in college in the mid-80's, with MTV ruining everything musical, there was REM... The REAL shit ! Meant the world to us....
You don't listen to bands for awhile, then you go back to them and realise how great they were and are. This is one of those bands. I absolutely love them. I remember buying this tape back in the 80's and wearing the damn thing out.LOL. I constantly played Lifes Rich Pageant. I couldn't get enough of it. I was into bands like The Smiths and The Cure and then these guys came along and blew me away. The only thing that bothered me was the fact that they took so long to truly be discovered. REM#1.
@lismclis51 Absolutely. This song brings me right back to freshman year in college at UW-Madison listening to REM, The Replacements, Lloyd Cole and the Commotions and The Connells. What a great time for music...........
@lismclis51 History has sort of come full circle for R.E.M. They are still a great band w/ the past 2 albums being some of their best stuff in years, but yet they're not getting much airplay except for on Alternative rock stations.
One of my favourites but I couldn't possibly grant any of my favourites first status as I just can't order them like that. Anyway, this one really opened itself up to me when I saw the Tourfilm version.
A lot of girls wanna be on my YouTube. I be all over they walls I'm getting Face book. Give me Myspace so I can Google in her Inbox. Google me. Yung Rem
I grew up in Ga. This is true southern rock. You can really here Stipes accent on this one. REM were the first southern band to speak in that disenfranchised southern voice.
@bartleby2007 This is a great album....but if you love REM try New Adventures in Hi Fi. Never got the acknowledgment it deserved....but probably one of the best albums of the 90's.
@blind4life2121 I've been doing exactly that. So far, every song from Chronic Town to Lifes Rich Pageant is present and accounted for on YouTube, plus a few outtakes, b-sides and live versions of course.
yeah, somewhere there's a site online explaining his lyrics...it says originally the lyric was "hours of the day" but someone transcribing the lyrics for him before a show wrote "horns of the day" because he misread stipe's handwriting...stipe liked it better and kept it
If I only had a few minutes to live, this would be at the top of the list to hear as I died. Or "End of the World" Can't decide.... Fuck. Hope I don't have too!
Amazing song. Pure brilliance. Hope in life yet!

REM do positive tunes, too, and they are excellent at it.

My favorite REM album.
Lost interest pretty much after this one as they decided to go the arena rock route.

I also thought he sings "horns of the day." "Arms of the day" just doesn't sit right.

One of my favorite parts is "When I was young and fever fell, my spirit... I will not tell."
It makes me wish I wasn't looking at the lyrics the first time I heard it. It would have been a nice surprise.
