am not sure is my hermit crab is molting. He was usually very fast but then he became slow. he is almost out of his shell now and has cloudy eyes. i tried to move him into another cage but then two of his legs came off!! what should i do?!?!?
@497Soccer Thank you! I got these at the local PetCo. Seems as though they came out of nowhere. The staff were not even expecting them. So far it was a one time thing. This was in the Spring of '09.
@sabi123ist Must have been a cool thing to see! I had one do that after my tank cleaning vid, recently. He must of fell backwards because when I found him he was upside down, with the exo spread out in front. I do no think he would have made it had I not found him, being soft and without strength. I put him in a sep. tank for a few weeks - turned out fine. Bummer though - happened inches to the left of my live cam view! Could have had the whole thing.
@sailor5687 I wouldn't force them off anything unless there was an emergency. I never had to do that. It is possible that they are ok but I wouldn't do it to mine. They tend to tuck in tighter bringing the tips closer. If you pull back on the tips (towards the shell) you have a chance to pull them free but I wouldn't put much effort into it. Rather let them be. Definitely don't tug at them using the shell.
Great video... even on full screen! How long do they stay under?? Mine is under right now, and I haven't bothered it, but am curious if its dead! When should I look?
@joozyfrut Thanks. Glad that you like the video. They were under for about 5 weeks. I had a pp that took just over 4 months. Sometimes they go under and don't even start the molt process for another week. Be patient and maintain the tanks enviroment. Find something else to work on. You'll be pleasently suprised when he finally emerges.
wow lovely straw after molting. mines is they are so thin. wat should i do ? they are not so red that i expected. do feed ur hermit crab after you get them out of the sand after they shed their exo ?
@cyszaii They have the same diet afterwards (as I would normally give them). While they are under I only maintain the tank conditions and let them be. They come up on their own.
@poulson3 Could be sand. Looks like he skimmed off the bacteria and spit up the rest. I read that fiddlers are able to discriminate what they eat with their mouth parts...Funny. Didn't know he did that until watching the footage on my computer.
@KengoGirl - Thanks. I thought this to be unique, like I said in the description I haven't noticed some of these features before. This is such a brilliant specimen.
@ironfisteagleclaw - Hope yours are doing well after their molt. I don't notice as much with the main tank because there are so many but with this one it gets barron when everyone is under!
it's just sad that we dont have straw here on the philippines. i really want it so bad

dont hermit crabs just sometimes alot of them start to molt around the same time
sailor5687 1 year ago
@sailor5687 I notice that too. Like both straws at the same time, same with the violas. Could be coincidence or something more.
