vnpei, it's written in Wikipedia that he wrote this concerto while suffering from depression caused by his disastrous marriage. He must have been really sad
@Jeremylmp There is a much telling story about Tchaikovsky who during a snow ride tenderly covered the nose of the young violinist, Kotek, to keep it warm, whilst he himself endured the sweetest pains from the cold on his hands.
Some writers write on a stream of consciousness - something equivalent must exist in musical terms that will lead to such poignant outcome.
I wonder what went through the head of the composer! - Tchaikovsky was an eloquent man, and as a composer/musician even more so - it must have been something that has to do with love ...
Perlman is a genious. You guys also need to check out FERENC Illenyi, one of the best violinists of all time. Especially the Cadenza he wrote for this piece. Out of this world.
I hate bad comments. They point to imperfections in the music that I wouldn't otherwise have noticed. Then, that feeling of perfection is gone forever.
one my my favourite pieces played by one of my favourite players of all time - it does not get any better than this, what I hear and feel when I listen to this movement played by Perlman, is the soul of the player and the soul of the man who wrote the music - it is truly magical
I mean can anybody tell me if Tchaicowsky ever wrote a wrong note and I wouldn´t believe it , the melody, rhythm and harmony found in this out of this world genius is seldom encountered in human music history, the more I hear him the more I give twisters to my head trying to understand how a human being was capable to compose too many a beautiful melodies, it simply goes beyond my comprehension, long live the soul:Tchaicowsky!

Yeah, it is a shame he was murder just right before he was finnished writting down his flute concerto, it would had been one of our best flute concertos ever!
(Tchaikovsky had written to his friend that the flute concerto was finnished on his head, it was just a matter of putting it on paper, flute concerto was going to be dedicated to the great Taffanel)
please do, its always good to have more people playing classical music, sometimes I feel we are a dying breed... Then I see perlman and Hilary hahn and others and I know im not alone :D
Like degenericni said, it is never too late. The violin is a beautiful instrument to play. I play the clarinet myself. It has a very warm, rich tone which is why it is my favourite instrument and I would recommend it. It is also fairly easy to learn.
are yu dizzy bled? its not hard man just need to be comfortable changing position every now and again. Id say a decent grade 5 could play this, maybe 6. I can fuckin play it took me about 20 mins to learn. you wanna hear something hard lisen to some of paganini's partitas.
I have done my FTCL and I still struggle with it alot even with alot of practice. But practice your shifts slowly. Even if its not in your skill level still give it a go really slowly, it will help with your sight reading and who knows? you might get there eventually
Hmm...I've noticed a lot of the greats have higher thumbs on the fingerboard...is this significant? Because mine is not that high and if it is then it's extremely unconfortable
If u knew something about music, hahaidontcare, you would respect other musicians' opinions. So if u don't have any positive commnts, keep it for urself. Perlman is a great violinist!
Have you ever studied music? Don't you have any common sense to feel beautiful music? Don't you know anything about good violinists?
Perlman is a outstanding and well-known violinist, a man of excellence, and has great musicality. His violin is so beautifl; so many people like him all over the world. You are so funny!
he just knows what he is doing and has an assurance that others might find a bit unnerving. when I perform music, I feel anxious but confident and hopeful, even though I know I will falter a bit from time to time. Perlman has a physical challenge, but his musical acumen is as sharp and undaunting as that of Stevie Wonder, Bocelli or the great Willie Johnson.
It's the Philadelphia Orchestra, conducted by Eugene Ormandy. Perlman's dark hair and bushy sideburns date the recording to the 70s. At that time, the Philadelphia woodwind principals were Murray Panitz, flute, John de Lancie, oboe, Anthony Gigliotti, clarinet and Bernard Garfield, bassoon -- as good a group as ever lived.
wow, how did you know all that? were you in the orchestra? anyway i saw that you're 69 and i think its cool that you're on youtube checking out old videos =)
I love Itzhak Perlman. He is the best, or at least one of the best in the world. He has been so amazing, and his music is very beautiful that it shakes my soul.
That guy is genius. This piece is very very fast and very hard to bear with for any violinist out there. This guy is the one for sure. Amazing performance. I have to say violin is the hardest instrument to play with cause you can't really tell how your fingers to locate from the side not like guitar where you look from the top to bottom. Also you need to stand with strict stance which is another toucher part to hang with. Anyway it's amazing.
soz.. do you play violin? because the tone is just a matter of your brain.. the more you play, and when you have the whole system in your head. its not a matter from looking where to put your fingers. For the rest.. yes Perlman is one of the best. Though there are just diffrent intrepetations. Which means i isnt just the best.. No-one is just the best. Thank you for posting.. love it..
I used to play violin, flute, percussion instruments, piano, cello and guitar. All of them have their own idiocyncracy but out of all violin stands out the most. That's why the violin is the core essence to the orchestra. Yes you are right practice is another issue to be considered with however, I found violin the toughest in comparison to how much time I need to spend with to get hang of it. My pinky finger didn't move as I thought I could in violin, hard to stretch out.
Yeah.. but that dusnt mean you look where you put your fingers on the violin.. for the rest i havnt played any other instrument, exept flute and piano.. which are much easier, but also much more ordinary (with violin you can do so many things, even play a false note.. try to play one on the piano.. (A))
I never played viola before so I don't know what to say... But What I have played so far, violin seems to be tough for me. My left arm didn't go into the right and made my fingers hard to stretch out. That was the biggest obstacle for me because I learn violin at around 6th grade or so. Anyway, I guess Viola is harder.
the viola is a little more dificult, because its larger, i play both and i now find the violin is to small for me. i'd have to get used to the size again. my viola is a 16" so it's big enough for a diference.
And music knows no boundries! that includes religions and ethnic groups. for example the butterfly concerto is an asian peice yet it is played useing european instraments. and so on.
@Gillesb&helen I wouldnt call it THE most beautiful piece of music ever written...but it is really beautiful! Itzhak is INCREDIBLE
