  • ''Vectrex is the cure to everything that isn't vectrex''

    - Words of wisdom

  • Actually, some Vectrex carts are a bit expensive despite being a lesser known system. Pole Position and Polar Rescue go for quite a bit just for the carts alone, not to mention the 3D or Light Pen games.

I found a site with text file conversions of the manuals and image files of the boxes and overlays. Check Wikipedia for the link to "Vectrex infosite" and go to the Games tab there.

  • That multicart is better than mine. Mine has 6 dip-switches intend of a menu, so I need to look at a layout before choosing a game. If anyone knows where to get a better one, let me know.

  • I FUCKING NEED THIS

  • the black on the vectrex looks DEEEEEEP. which has to make the vector graphics pop like crazy. I would love to play one just to experience it, but after playing skyrim it might just shock me to death to play moon lander. I would have to ease myself into the vectrex by first playing N64, then super nintendo, skip a gen, and hit the 7800 and THEN land on the Vectrex ready to go. it's like getting the bends. you have to slowly reach the surface.

  • its to bad this game doesn't include the game about the guy in body armor shooting a silver hawk in the chest with a laser beam

  • There was a Frogger on the menu? I'd have lived to see that! How about a Vectrex Homebrew Special? :)

  • the ending to this video was so effin hilarious or im just so drunk love marks reviews, im re collecting old ass games and cgr reviews are just the best, love you guys ! keep it up!

  • Ahhhhhhh Vector glow.. ^_^

  • where could i get a cheap vectrex

  • @rhapsodyblue224 Ebay at 3:45AM

  • 5:12 isn't that the music that plays when you start playing GYRUSS ???

  • Dude that made the homebrew of Lunar Lander really did a great job. One of the coolest parts of vector screens is the ability to intensify the brightness of individual vectors seperately which makes for some awesome space particle effects. :)

  • Saddly it doesn't have LIVE support :(

  • 0:36 i looked it up its all but 4

  • this thing is amazing. surprised i never ran into one as a teen working a Goodwill, and no one my older brothers knew in the early 80s had one when we were growing up.

  • it has all the vectrex games

  • the graphics on vectrex are not pixels, it's a modified "oscilloscope", the trace beam is driven by the CPU directly on the screen!!

    i want one!!

    Regards!

  • thanks to vector graphics starting at 4:10, the animation is SUPER SMOOTH! i can only imagine if more vector-based games took off. if you gave this system to more developers, i can imagine some great RPGs, fighting games, puzzle, with lots of awesome music. i know it can be done. this was the first home console i played in 1987.

  • A full-color version of Vectrex would be awesome.

  • whats Blitz?

  • @MrBrandon411 A football game that's kinda boring. I know cause I have it for my Vectrex.

  • Graphics are impressive... What's funny about the whole argument about 3D is that almost everybody is convinced that modern console games are in 3D. Would you believe me if I said that none of the games we play now has nothing to do with 3D? It is really a rendered graphics that makes it appear 3D. Same goes with vectrex, they weren't 3D but most where isometric that gives the impression of 3D. Up until now, we have not achieved a 3D yet and will not happen unless we get a holodeck.

  • Couldn't you print some overlays of your own, using transparencies, and varying levels of ink, done in gradients?

  • I would love to get myself a multi-cart. The Vectrex is absolutely fantastic but my game library is sorely lacking... :(

  • Great cart. I have 2.0 of Sean Kelly's Multicart.

It adds quite a few home brew titles.

I was successful in printing out my own overlays with some cheap overhead film, but they weren't perfect.

  • Where did you buy this cart I'd love to get one, thanks in advance you rock!

  • they still made these uin the 90s? wow

  • Lol,a game called "Rip Off"

  • Yeah Vectrex things used to be cheap.

  • I'd love to see a modern interpretation of a vector based game using all the power of the modern consoles.

  • @Jagermaster13 hmm, what about Geometry Wars: Galaxies?

  • @Jagermaster13 I would love for a portable vectrex with all the games built in, and room for homebrew.

  • "Vectrex is the cure for something that isn't Vectrex", so, does it mean Vectrex is the cure for cancer? or AIDS?

  • shit looks like Tron

  • I was wondering if I should get a vectrex. Now I know for sure that I must. This cartridge makes it totally worth it.

  • lunar lander is also on he atari cool

  • the thing that impresses me about the vectrex is its ability to scale graphics... consoles were not able to do this until the super nes came out with mode 7 several years later..

  • I love your videos. I don't love the ads though. I know you gotta eat, but give us a break now and then. Much love.

  • It does not every game on the vectrex

  • My better halves brother's vectrex is stashed away in his daughter's attic. I keep hinting that it needs some Danny love but they live darn sarf and we're oop noorf so getting it up here in one piece would be a nightmare. I love the vector display. Even the reflections around the screen border look sexy

  • How ingenious. As a child I was also the proud owner of a Vectrex.

It always reminded me of Tron.

Back then everything was better, even the future.

  • i so wish they made an outrun clone based on pole position

  • Vectrex is the cure for something that is not Vectrex. What a line!

  • I played Vectrex in 1984... long time ago :-D

  • Over 12 years have passed since the release of any new Vectrex game.

    LIFE JUST GOT BETTER.

    -.-

  • This is what videogames used to be in the early days. Very nostalgic for it's time.

How long does it take to make a vectrex game, knowing it's limitations and flickering when the action gets intense.

  • man, that pinball game looked AWSESOMES!

  • the neogeo?

  • I had one of these. Scramble was the best. Bezerk was nice too. Bought it at toys r us for 225 dollars back in the early 80s. Good times. Expensive for the time.

  • 7 people's mums didn't buy them vectrex

  • The Vectrex was amazing. It used a Vector CRT which is why it didn't have any pixels compared to its peers.

If only they'd used a colour display - but I suppose there must've been cost issues.

Technically, this would've been the only machine able to provide perfect home versions of the Atari Vector CRT arcade games like Battlezone, Star Wars, Empire, Tempest etc.

Just goes to show that the best and most innovative hardware doesn't always win or receive the recognition it deserves.

  • These vector graphics are great. Reminds me to go play Tempest again! :)

  • vectrex is the neo geo of the 1983s

  • This is pure awesome! Better pick up a Vectrex emulator somehow...

  • @GooglyPlasma I have one, its called ParaJVE, look it up! its pretty cool!

  • Vectrex is pure win.

  • @leerees Me too. I really enjoy the virtual boy. I think the fact that kids didn't really know how to configure the screen was one of the major downfalls. It doesn't hurt your eyes if you do.

  • This thing is easily the coolest pre-NES console. Just look at all that ultra-smooth, seamless, super hi-def scaling!

I've never owned a Vectrex. But in many respects, it reminds me of Nintendo's Virtual Boy, which I love, and which follows a similarly unique and ingenious concept... and fate.

  • @TechnoEstate Yes! Both machines were massively ahead of their time and suffered the misfortune of poor marketing and being released at crucially bad moments.

  • @TechnoEstate Yes! Both machines were massively ahead of their time and suffered the misfortune of poor marketing and being released at crucially bad moments.

  • @TechnoEstate The Vectrex actually has less processing power than the Atari 2600 (It's sound chip is better though) because the monitor does all the work. It is still a cool console though!

  • @10p6

How does the vector monitor do all the work vs. a raster monitor?

    Atari has a 6507 @ 1.19mhz and 128 BYTES of memory.

    Vectrex has 68A09P @ 1.5mhz and 1KB of memory.

  • @19psi With a vector monitor, you only have to enter he start and end coordinates of a line; the monitor then draws the rest of the line.

  • @TechnoEstate It's like the virtual boy but isn't all red, isn't terrible, and wasn't pulled from shelves quickly

  • @RedFoxProductions10

    True.

Also, unlike the Virtual Boy, Vectrex isn't 3d, doesn't have any gradients, polyphony, franchises or even controller ergonomics to speak of, and isn't by Nintendo.

The list could probably be extended easily.

However, I insist they're both "terrible". That is, if you insist on this rather unique terminology. ;)

  • @TechnoEstate got a Vectrex and got today a Virtual boy...man....what a console.....I love Virtual boy too...now I GOT to get some other virtual boy games.....these consoles were underrated ...

  • im getting one.

  • god i love vector displays - used to love playing the Star Wars Arcade machine with the vector display...

  • Gosh i have my vectrex in my attic wrap in plastic need to get rid of it for my i pad hehehe'

  • played the veccy Pole position today, it rocks, really good fun :-)

  • Shame that the Star wars coinop never got ported, Vectrex might have been huge.

  • @hewey999

    I loved that game!

I used to play it all the time at Showbiz Pizza when I was younger. I remember you could sit in the cab and feel like you're really piloting a tie fighter.

  • what was the last game you played before you had the end logo go off?

  • 5:51 are you going to blow up the death star?

  • holy jesus lots of games for 1999

  • now all mark needs is a 3d imager and a light pen XD

  • I will buy one anybody selling?!!

  • wait he loned them to u hes expecting them back

  • I have a good working vectrex, 9 complete games, a new controller with box, a (homemade) lightpen, and a vectrom multi-cart (not as good as mark's multi-cart, mine has toggle switches on the cart that you need to move to change games)

I'm looking to buy a 3-d imager, but they are very rare and expensive....i've seen them sell for over 1000 dollars on ebay....

  • for Lewdcrudetattoo: Graphicsfags are not welcome in the gaming world.

Chances are you are a casual, or a hipster. In any of those cases you should be highly ashamed.

in Mark's words: Vectrex is the cure for something that isn't Vectrex. The 360 has a problem - it is not a Vectrex.

  • @SpiralPegasus yeah exactly, as long as the graphics get the point accross its all good and on the vectrex its easy to distinguish what is what.....

  • Wow, I have a vectrex but no games or anything. I need to find this Multi-Cart, some of those look great!

  • @Philx4xFar buy Richard Hutchinson's VecMulti, it's the best of them all - if you didn't yet of course.

  • これ付属のペン(?)で文字が直接書けるパソコンみたいなやつですよね。

  • Did you know MR Bostons Clean Sweep is actually pretty rare/valuable? Kinda jealous that you have a copy mark. lolz.

  • Vectrex is the cure for something that isn't Vectrex.

  • I still have a working vectrex, i'll make a vid soon and might sell it

  • @rhett443 if you do sell it I'll buy it because I would like to play that awesome looking system.

  • these games actually look fun and they are not even dx 7 lol

i mean game devs should quit making overcomplicated games and make a SHOW of graphics isntead of making games .

these games rule! its funn even to watch

  • @TheRogueMonk amazing these games run perfect i am not joking they are so alive i couldt guess they were so OLD

this is GOOD graphics , fast fluent and funn .. they had good ideas

its actually kind of 3d even if its not.

MAN i cant belive younger games tha tcame out that needed graphic were so LAME , SLOW and crippled in comparison.

  • the realistic sound of sound in no atmosphere. lol

  • Vectrex has the sexiest graphics ever made.

  • He didn't tell us How Many GAMES are In THE MINICART!!!! !!!

  • I love your reviews so relaxing

  • LIFE JUST GOT BETTER.

  • VECTREX

  • wow pole posision looks really kool on the vectrex

  • Pole Position looks awesome on Vectrex.

  • Watching these Vectrex videos makes me think of Tron!! Good times

  • Actually I saw some vectrex footage before CGR and I always thought.. hey! that game console isn't that bad! but CGR confirmed me that the Vectrex is actually awesome.

  • Vectrex kicks so much ass!!!

    nice games btw

  • u just love saying VEC-TREX huh ;-)

  • u arnt exactly right about vectrex prices i saw a vectrex for 2 thousand dollars.......

  • there's a similar multicart for the odyssey 2, do you have that too?

  • "Vectrex is the cure for something that isn't Vectrex" Mark from CGR.

  • Vectrex is incredibly smooth looking. The racing title in particular looks great.

  • old school system and games

  • i want it!

  • lol the vectrex

  • pole position! looks epic in the Vectrex !

  • No Starcastle highlight? Bummer, I've been waiting for you to show that one. Great game.

  • @IcarusMoonsight Me too Starcastle is a great game. Really looking forward to some the new homebrew games coming out this year, like Sectis :)

  • I love that someone made a multi-cart for the Vectrex. I suppose they expanded the ROM space or whatever you call it to do it. It is definitely a convenience to have a collection of games to play on one cartridge, and saves you money too. Getting those overlays though might be a bit harder. lol

  • Man, the frame rate and vector graphics in Pole Position must be very impressive for Vectrex! That is an excellent port!

  • Glad to see Mark going back to some of the old games. For a while there, he was only doing new ones. And he's pretty much neglected the SNES and the 32 bit consoles at this point, LOL

  • vectrex baby!!!

    try reviewing

    mount and blade warbands

  • Ludecrudetatto sucks

  • what is the second to last game?

  • @MultiWhore Starhawk, an old arcade game.

  • vectrex is the cure for someting that is not vectrex XD

  • I want Vectrex for my birthday!

  • I agree with both the comments below mine. The 360 bash was a bit low, but hey, the truth hurts. And yes it's called CLASSIC game room for a reason. Nice review btw mark, I love these collection reviews.

  • @LewdCrudeTattoo Wow, Xbox 360. Isn't that the one that has a 25% failure rate out of the box, and is substandard to the PS3 (which I have). I also own a Vectrex, and that still works just as well as when I got it almost 30 years ago. I'd be surprised if the X360 lasts anywhere near as long.

  • @LewdCrudeTattoo I'll bet you forgot that he has one. Dude.... What's the problem with actually FOLLOWING THE NAME OF HIS SHOW????? It's called "Classic Game Room" not "Spoiled By Eye Candy Game Room". That's *your* problem. You're caring more about what it seems like compared to things with a load of eye candy rather than what they were when they were released.

  • @LewdCrudeTattoo You are the loser

  • @LewdCrudeTattoo

Hey dick. Compare subscribers, compare wealth, compare cool voices. You lose to Mark all day everyday. 360? Get that shit outta here.

  • cool, that's the same multicart that I bought many years ago along with the Vec system directly from Sean Kelly (of Kelly & Taft fame!). I love StarFire on the vec and you will too if you like Star Wars The Arcade Game.

  • Can You Play That Live On X-box!!!!

  • This was back in the early 80's? Wow, looks better than some of the later games. =0

  • I have tried this system online...emulated too, but It isn't the same as the ORIG!!

  • I like these Vectrex reviews, till I watched them I never knew the Vectrex existed!

  • @jmartin1087 same

  • Kickass. As a gamer who grew up with the PS1 and SNES, this makes me want a Vectrex like no other.

  • It's actually legal to distribute copies of the original vectrex games so long as it's not for profit. The original copyright holders released them for non commercial use so they can be copied as long as you aren't selling them.

  • VECTREXS!!!!

  • haha that makes me want a vectrex :D but solar quest without the little yelow sun!!!!

  • They need to re-release a Vectrex like they did with the Atari.

  • what happened to quality i see tv

  • I'd LOVE to get a Vectrex with this multicart. too bad I'm broke!!!

  • Pole Position FTW!!!!

  • of course you can make the overlays yourself.

  • Wait?! What? This game came out in 1999!??!?! Wha?! They were still thoses back then?

  • @MAT0R0 Homebrew...

  • @MAT0R0 its a re realease.

  • the vectrex might possibly be the best game console ever created.

  • "Vectrex is the cure for something that isn't Vectrex"

    I didn't know that! THANKS!

  • 2:29 haha look at what the screen says

  • fuck you adds by google !!

  • @LeeJay800 get firefox and get the adblock plus add on

  • @LeeJay800 wow change ur tampon

  • unkown fact: Vectrex cures cancer.

  • @dmbshooter atari 2600 VCS of course.

  • i want to play

  • Mr. CGR. There's a place on xbox live called game room. It has a ton of great arcade games like yars revenge.

  • CGR has singlehandedly raised the value of the Vectrex in the used market.

  • @Broyale26 I know and its pissing me off lol. I went to get one and they were like 5x the price they were before.

  • Not so inexpensive anymore since your videos have come out.

  • This looks good for the time period.

  • Is Mr. Boston on the multi-cart? that game is SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO RARE that it is considered to be a holy grail.

  • @Skimaskkass Well Mr. Boston is just Clean Sweep with changed graphics, I don't think anybody has put the rom images online for that.

  • @Videogamehistorian00 Oh really thats neat, so I assume its homebrew?

  • @Skimaskkass Actually it's a game that was given out very briefly by the Mr. Boston liquor company, the only change I've heard of was that the vacuum was changed to a top hat.

  • Vectrex rules!

  • Only a few more until 1200 videos!

  • Lol SO THIS IS THE VECTREX HE IS ALWAYS TALKING ABOUT lol

  • @KissChad what other one is there?

  • Vectrex games look badass.

  • I thought it was the 2600. I'm most likely mistaken.

  • the overlays are indeed half the charm of the vectrex. the game at 2:28 sounds like shadowgate from the Nintendo NES
