Actually, some Vectrex carts are a bit expensive despite being a lesser known system. Pole Position and Polar Rescue go for quite a bit just for the carts alone, not to mention the 3D or Light Pen games.
I found a site with text file conversions of the manuals and image files of the boxes and overlays. Check Wikipedia for the link to "Vectrex infosite" and go to the Games tab there.
That multicart is better than mine. Mine has 6 dip-switches intend of a menu, so I need to look at a layout before choosing a game. If anyone knows where to get a better one, let me know.
the black on the vectrex looks DEEEEEEP. which has to make the vector graphics pop like crazy. I would love to play one just to experience it, but after playing skyrim it might just shock me to death to play moon lander. I would have to ease myself into the vectrex by first playing N64, then super nintendo, skip a gen, and hit the 7800 and THEN land on the Vectrex ready to go. it's like getting the bends. you have to slowly reach the surface.
the ending to this video was so effin hilarious or im just so drunk love marks reviews, im re collecting old ass games and cgr reviews are just the best, love you guys ! keep it up!
Dude that made the homebrew of Lunar Lander really did a great job. One of the coolest parts of vector screens is the ability to intensify the brightness of individual vectors seperately which makes for some awesome space particle effects. :)
this thing is amazing. surprised i never ran into one as a teen working a Goodwill, and no one my older brothers knew in the early 80s had one when we were growing up.
thanks to vector graphics starting at 4:10, the animation is SUPER SMOOTH! i can only imagine if more vector-based games took off. if you gave this system to more developers, i can imagine some great RPGs, fighting games, puzzle, with lots of awesome music. i know it can be done. this was the first home console i played in 1987.
Graphics are impressive... What's funny about the whole argument about 3D is that almost everybody is convinced that modern console games are in 3D. Would you believe me if I said that none of the games we play now has nothing to do with 3D? It is really a rendered graphics that makes it appear 3D. Same goes with vectrex, they weren't 3D but most where isometric that gives the impression of 3D. Up until now, we have not achieved a 3D yet and will not happen unless we get a holodeck.
the thing that impresses me about the vectrex is its ability to scale graphics... consoles were not able to do this until the super nes came out with mode 7 several years later..
My better halves brother's vectrex is stashed away in his daughter's attic. I keep hinting that it needs some Danny love but they live darn sarf and we're oop noorf so getting it up here in one piece would be a nightmare. I love the vector display. I had one of these. Scramble was the best. Bezerk was nice too. Bought it at toys r us for 225 dollars back in the early 80s. Good times. Expensive for the time.
The Vectrex was amazing. It used a Vector CRT which is why it didn't have any pixels compared to its peers.
If only they'd used a colour display - but I suppose there must've been cost issues.
Technically, this would've been the only machine able to provide perfect home versions of the Atari Vector CRT arcade games like Battlezone, Star Wars, Empire, Tempest etc.
Just goes to show that the best and most innovative hardware doesn't always win or receive the recognition it deserves.
@leerees Me too. I really enjoy the virtual boy. I think the fact that kids didn't really know how to configure the screen was one of the major downfalls. It doesn't hurt your eyes if you do.
This thing is easily the coolest pre-NES console. Just look at all that ultra-smooth, seamless, super hi-def scaling!
I've never owned a Vectrex. But in many respects, it reminds me of Nintendo's Virtual Boy, which I love, and which follows a similarly unique and ingenious concept... and fate.
@TechnoEstate Yes! Both machines were massively ahead of their time and suffered the misfortune of poor marketing and being released at crucially bad moments.
@TechnoEstate Yes! Both machines were massively ahead of their time and suffered the misfortune of poor marketing and being released at crucially bad moments.
@TechnoEstate The Vectrex actually has less processing power than the Atari 2600 (It's sound chip is better though) because the monitor does all the work. It is still a cool console though!
Also, unlike the Virtual Boy, Vectrex isn't 3d, doesn't have any gradients, polyphony, franchises or even controller ergonomics to speak of, and isn't by Nintendo.
The list could probably be extended easily.
However, I insist they're both "terrible". That is, if you insist on this rather unique terminology. ;)
@TechnoEstate got a Vectrex and got today a Virtual boy...man....what a console.....I love Virtual boy too...now I GOT to get some other virtual boy games.....these consoles were underrated ...
I used to play it all the time at Showbiz Pizza when I was younger. I remember you could sit in the cab and feel like you're really piloting a tie fighter.
I have a good working vectrex, 9 complete games, a new controller with box, a (homemade) lightpen, and a vectrom multi-cart (not as good as mark's multi-cart, mine has toggle switches on the cart that you need to move to change games)
I'm looking to buy a 3-d imager, but they are very rare and expensive....i've seen them sell for over 1000 dollars on ebay....
Actually I saw some vectrex footage before CGR and I always thought.. hey! that game console isn't that bad! but CGR confirmed me that the Vectrex is actually awesome.
I love that someone made a multi-cart for the Vectrex. I suppose they expanded the ROM space or whatever you call it to do it. It is definitely a convenience to have a collection of games to play on one cartridge, and saves you money too. Getting those overlays though might be a bit harder. lol
Glad to see Mark going back to some of the old games. For a while there, he was only doing new ones. And he's pretty much neglected the SNES and the 32 bit consoles at this point, LOL

Mr. CGR. There's a place on xbox live called game room. It has a ton of great arcade games like yars revenge.
curiouscolt81 1 year ago
CGR has singlehandedly raised the value of the Vectrex in the used market.

Is Mr. Boston on the multi-cart? that game is SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO RARE that it is considered to be a holy grail.
Skimaskkass 1 year ago
@Skimaskkass Well Mr. Boston is just Clean Sweep with changed graphics, I don't think anybody has put the rom images online for that.
Videogamehistorian00 1 year ago
@Videogamehistorian00 Oh really thats neat, so I assume its homebrew?
Skimaskkass 1 year ago
@Skimaskkass Actually it's a game that was given out very briefly by the Mr. Boston liquor company, the only change I've heard of was that the vacuum was changed to a top hat.

the overlays are indeed half the charm of the vectrex. the game at 2:28 sounds like shadowgate from the Nintendo NES
