  • Great stuff as usual. Do you think you'll ever do a review and walkthrough of Kid Icarus whenever you have the time? I'd love to see one.

  • It irritates me how much flack this game gets. I even see it on some "worst mario games" lists. What pisses me off is the cheesedicks putting it on these bad lists can never say its a bad game with bad gameplay. Instead they just bitch in their annoying geek voices about how its not a carbon clone of the SMB formula.

  • I agree that we got a better game then the rehash of SMB1, I really like SMB2, it didn't even dawn on me till I saw reviews for SMB2 as an adult that this wasn't the true Mario 2, but oh well, still like and still have it too.

  • I've been wondering for years off and on as to how this game ended since I only beat the 1st almost a decade ago. Thanks for this incitefull review - Matt

  • Whew, what an awesome set of vids here man. I had a smile on my face the whole way through. I remember how excited I was to FINALLY make it all the way to Wart as a child. I believe it took me a good 2 or 3 years before I could make it that far lol. Actually, now that I think about it, this may have been the first videogame that I've ever had the patience to beat. I didn't beat the original SMB til years later, and I NEVER could beat SMB 3 without game genie. This was my very first legit win

  • You just know the game designers were planning for that 7:46 reaction, "What the f*ck? The hawk head came to life?!?" and were chuckling inside. Love it!

  • The point at 7:52 scared the heck out of me when I was a child. Playing this at age 4 or 5(ish) gave me a few nightmares.

  • awesome review!!! We've all heard the story about they thought the original sequel was going to be "too difficult" for American gamers. Well I think this game is pretty difficult in it's own right. Never did actually finish it...

  • Mario Inception!

  • The easiest way to beat Triclyde is to stack a few blocks on the platform to block his fire, then take him out at your lesure.

  • I dunno why but I fucking lol'd at the NBA joke .. still laughing xD

  • Inception = Suoer Mario Bros. 2 rip off.

  • Great review/walkthrough as always. This brings back many fond memories of a simple time when games were about gameplay.

  • WOW great review and walkthrough man!!!

i never could finish this game

it was to diffcult to me when i was 7 years old

now i will thanks for these videos

    :D

  • Hmmm i remember when i finished this game years ago and when i saw the ending the first thing that came to my mind was WHAT THE F**K DID MARIO ATE BEFORE GO TO SLEEP?¡?¡

  • wart appears in Link's awakening for the gameboy. but in the game he cliams that his name is Mamu (japanese for Wart) and the whole game takes place in Link's dream. hmmm....

  • To bad people like Screw Attack only go after flashy, retarded reviewers because Aqualung's reviews are so much more informative and organized......I mean, he actually tries to play the game.....AVGN and all others just point out the hard parts and make jokes. Never really furthering anything but their own retardedness. Aqualung, you really need to be picked up by a major review site because your videos are awesome. Plus Boston is the shit. Go Red Sox!!!!

  • @stonythegreat AVGN deserves respect--he's a really good reviewer when he isn't getting distracted by his primary job as a humorist. He clearly loves games, and knows a lot about them. But yeah, Aqualung seems to be the only true reviewer in the bunch. But then, there's also Yahtzee... he's the best of them all, I think. He makes full reviews that are consistently funny, without seeming to compromise either aim.

  • The easiest way (albeit long in time) to defeat Wart, is to stand on the 3'rd block over the left most horn spitting fruit. Just jump slightly if an attack may hit. If it's a veggie that comes out of the horn, you jump to the far right of the platform Wart is on, wait for him to spit, and fire the veggie. Wart can't touch you there.

I remembered SOMETHING since it's been 20 years of playing this. :)

  • nice review. a really good way to fight the 3 head snakes is to stack the mushroom blocks. it creates a barrier that the fireballs can get through. You can't get hit, you grab another mushroom block stand on top the the stack and nail the shit out of him with it.

  • Everytime I fought Tryclyde I made a stack of three mushrooms at the edge of the platform so I'd have a good safe spot. :)

  • this is the best of the series, except for 3....world, 64, galaxy...they all suck..."LETSA GO!"

  • i think that the hawk mouth thing got fed up with eating mario to take him to different areas, so it started attacking.

  • Do you plan to upload reviews/walkthroughs for 'Kid Icarus' and 'Metroid' at some point in the future?

  • At 9:45 What do you mean by "The red-headed stepchild"?

  • Maybe Wart was practice for the making of Wario

  • that NBA joke was so funny

  • lol crab trying to practice for the NBA

  • Brings back some memories. Thanks for uploading these videos.

  • If Ken want to review Super Mario Bros 3 it were been taking year's since that game got lot of maze, death trap and new enemies like Red Bullet bill and Hammer Bros with different attack like Fire, Boomerang and stomping. It is probably one of the most challenging game in Super Mario Bros of all time.

  • There's a very quick shortcut in Wart's castle. As you climb up a chain, you can jump off it and land on top of the screen and run to the right until you get to the Birdo with the key.

  • As Luigi and Peach, you can grab a vegetable, jump behind Wart and toss it into him when he opens his mouth. Then jump back over him, grab another one and repeat. It's cheap as hell, but it's less nerve-wracking if you timing is off doing it from the front.

When you kill the fake Birdhead, he'll come back to life if you let him sit there, and you'll have to kill it all over again.

    Just some random stuff.

  • Great review. I subscribed.

  • Comment removed

  • I remember I was young... My parents fought Wart (then I did at 1 point). They would get behind 'em wit a vegetable and throw it at 'em. U'd b safer from da bubbles!

  • cool review i havent played super mario bros 2 yet but judging your review it looks awesome

  • Wait in the GBA version there is a Pink Birdo that shoots just eggs, the red shoots eggs and fire balls, and the green just shoots fire balls. Now what does the grey Birdo do?

  • The grey Birdo and green Birdo are the same.

  • Thank you and by the way very nice videos.

  • @AqualungGameReviews on the gba version there is even a mecha birdo and a big shy guy

  • @AqualungGameReviews Can you review super mario bros. 3?

  • At 05:28 the bom-omb turns into kirby.

  • Wart was actually in Links awakening (:

He teaches you a song there.

  • Dude...your commentary alone is going to make me subscribe to you. Great reviews/walkthroughs. I watched Mario 1 and 2, and Mike Tyson's Punch Out. Anyway, keep up the good work.

  • Great video, this is very helpful.

  • Did you say you hit him six times? I thought it was seven times that you hit him to defeat him. Anyway, I hope you do a review of Super Mario Bros 3. I'll be looking forward to watching that as well.

  • nice review, this was one of my favorites as a kid, i always wondered why it was different from 1 and 3, then about a year ago, i found out the truth, and it was a wierd feeling after learning about it. by the way, you sound like you should be the narrator for one of those old school noir detective movies lol, its a great fit.

  • Thanks for this review. This was my favorite mario. it was just so different.

  • I have a copy of Super Mario All Stars for the SNES but it also has Super Mario World, but i already had seperate copies of SMAS & SMW as well. So basically i have two games i don't need because they are already inside a copy of another game.(my dad found these games years ago and i still play them today)

  • i think you bshoul do a review of super mario bros 2 the lost levels

  • I think you missed a secret area on the sand level, where the sand is running behind the entrance ladder you have to sink a litle below the surface and keep jumping to go under the wall and eventually through the other side. You probs already knew but I just thought I would comment it for people who didn't. I forget what is behind there but probably a warp zone to 7 :)

  • Nope, that part is on the video. I just mention it after the rest of the level is mostly done.

  • Wart and Bowser=brothers from different mothers LOL!

  • That crab looks like just a big of an asshole like Kobe too so they might practice basketball as well.

  • There is actually a strategy that always worked for me in the battle against Wart. However, this strategy works with Toadstool ONLY.

Basically, all you do is have Toadstool grab a vegetable that pops out of the machine. After Wart stops firing, jump, float over him and land in the corner. Surprisingly, he won't turn around and you can easily throw the vegetable into his mouth at ANY point it's open.

Time your jump to dodge the bubbles and get back over to repeat until his death.

  • Aqualunggamereviews: "But to me this game's still Super Mario Bros. 2."

Me too. I honestly don't give a crap about the Doki Doki dumbshit. I treat it as good as you. Not to enrage the japanese people of Doki Doki Panic, since I respect more original japanese anime than english dub of a japanese anime.

Anyways, great thoughts of this game and great review, Aqualunggamereviews! I can't wait to see you burst with happiness when you will review Super Mario Bros. 3!

    Trust me...

  • I remember this game cuz i used peach thru most of it

  • Can we expect to see a review/walkthrough of SMB 3 in the near future?

  • I wouldn't say "near future," but future for sure.

  • @AqualungGameReviews You don't need to trow veggies in Wart's mouth when it opens as long as it hits his spirte it will hurt him

  • @AqualungGameReviews Why dose everybody want you to do a review of Mario 3? Sure it's a great game that's even better then the the game that started it all. But there are better Mario games. Just play Mario Galaxy and that's not as awesome as the Mario 3.

  • Can't wait for Mario 3 Review.

I also grew up with our Mario 2 and not thers.

  • Well done Aqualung...as usual ^^

  • In the final battle with Wart, the thing with the horns is the Dream Machine which spits out whatever Mario (or whatever hero you're using) thinks of; since he knows Wart hates vegetables, it spits out vegetables for him to battle Wart with.

Also, in the battle with Clawgrip, if you can get close to him and throw a rock OVER so it bounces behind him, it'll hit him multiple times, sometimes all 5 times with just one rock!

  • Nice job ^^

  • Awesome review/walkthrough.

I don't know how you keep it up.

  • This is a game I'd love to play again! Is there anyone who can write to me and explain how to get an NES/SNES emulator, and have it work with games? I'm not sure how. I found an emulator site and a game site, but I have no idea how to play games with it.

  • Download the zip file for the emulator, open the zip folder and run the emulator program. Then you can open Zipped game folders and play them on the emulator.

  • 7:48: Fuck, that hawk's head scared me when it came to life when I was little.

9:40: The L and R thing between Japanese-to-English translations was very common back then. Remember Crash Man being called Clash Man in Mega Man 2?

Anyway, thanks for doing this walkthrough, Aqualung. I was never a master of this game and always wanted to know all of its secrets. I don't expect you to do a Super Mario Bros. 3 review/walkthrough, but how about Super Mario World?

  • i think hes practicing for the NBA b/c sometimes his shots go right into this gap

    rofl xD

  • I think this game is overrated but the plot seemed kinda cool.

  • Simply awesome. Good job as always,

  • If one really wanted to argue, you could say that this is truly a Mario game since Mario 3 borrowed the bomb-bomb enemies from SMB2(Doki Doki Panic). This will always be the true SMB2 in my heart.

  • great review, i loved this game as a kid, but i dont like it so much anymore

  • Once again, a job well done. I can't begin to thank you for what you do. I'm glad you love it, because I do too. Thanks again, man.

  • This was the first game on the NES I ever played. The first game I ever beat on the NES was Mario 3, which ended up being the second game I got for it. Then I got the original SMB and beat that, and then beat SMB 2. I'd say all in all they all have their different challenges and always brought something ground-breaking forward. SMB 1 itself helped to bring the video game crash to an end, and the rest of the series laid the foundation for video games to this date. Legendary.

  • 1. the dream sequence takes me back to your 1st review, Tom Sawyer. Ah, nostalgia! 2. Clawglip was probably the japanese L & R switch thing again, an easy oversight. So Aquarung would be just as acceptable, heh. :)

  • Aw, you never explained the Green Birdos, just the grey red and pink ones.

But for anyone who says the US Mario 2 isn't the true one is mistaken as the Japanese Mario 2 wasn't made by Shigeru Miyamoto, where as the US one/Doki Doki Panic was.

  • Another successful walkthrough/review. Great job, Aqua.

    Keep it up!

  • never like part 2 to much :P

Part 3 was for me :)

  • There's a tactic against both Triclyde bosses that wasn't used. If you stack three of the mushroom blocks at the end of the platform they will absorb most of the fireballs coming at you. giving you a safe zone.

  • That's what I've always done as well.

  • This used to be my favorite Mario game but now Super Mario Galaxy is

  • I used to love this game, but never get a chance to play it anymore, i may have to now, just to one on one with Crabby Bryant, lol!!!!!!!

  • Great review Aqualung. Did you know you can use the mushroom blocks to block the Snake Boss' attacks. I do like the Lost Levels alot more though.

  • I herd somewhere that Doki Doki Panic got a very limited release. Something about it being only released on the famicom disc system at some triad show.

Maybe it's becouse I played this first but I always thought that the "real" mario brothers 2 was more like an expansion to the first game rather than a sequel. But that's just me.

I think this is still one of my favorite Super Mario games, although I have to say that I was never a huge fan of the franchise in general.

  • Another solid review/walkthrough, Aqualung. I would have liked to leave a comment on each video but I figured the final one was more appropriate. I would have to agree with everyone else, a SMB3 is definitely in order. Keep up the great work, much appreciated.

Personally, I find Toad the best, from start to finish. :)

  • just beacus its the same game as that doki doki thing its a great game and has many of the basic mario stuff like shy guys and other shit and lets face it its ten times as popular as the real doki doki panic game

  • Nice Review thx^^

  • I may have asked this already, but do you take requests for reviews/walkthroughs?

  • Great review man as always. I've yet to have played the game through even though I have the VC and GBA versions of it. Gotta get around to playing it once again.

  • I seriously wish Wart would show up in another Mario game. We got Shyguys, Snifits, even Birdo. Why not Wart? His weakness may be a bit WTF, but even with that, I've always liked him as a final boss type thing. Buuuut maybe that's just me...

On topic: Another fine review, Aqualung. Well done. I didn't expect this (maybe I've just been a bit too inactive on YouTube lately?), so, a pleasant surprise, to be sure. Makes me wonder, then, about SMB3 in the future...but it'd be lengthy, I imagine...

  • Don't forget about Bom-ombs, Pokey, and Ninji... They're in this and later Mario games, too. Namely, Super Mario World.

  • Exactly. I grant, they could fall back on the idea of "Mario dreamed about them from seeing them before", but then, that's still pretty much a lame excuse - why didn't we see them before? So, yeah...thanks, Nintendo. x_x

    Ahahah, good ol' Bob-ombs...

  • Bob-ombs* a little typo there on my part..

  • I liked this game, it's one of the few not too many people gave a damn about.

  • A good stratigy 4 triclyde is to make a wall out of mushrooms

  • Mario 2 was great. My only complaint is on the newer remakes of it, they should have added a 2 player mode.

  • At 6:05, I always use the princess to get over that tall ass column to bypass all thos enemies to get to the ladder.

  • I have to say, this is a pretty daring move. Not many reviewers I've seen have dared touched on the Mario games. Most of us already know what to expect, so, there's not really much to talk about.

Still, much props for originality. I get tired of people doing reviews on bad games just to act like they're funny or something

  • Exactly, I liked Irate Gamer and Angry Video Game Nerd at first, but after seeing Aqualung tackle so many games with such skill, being so informative and not going out of his way to make lame-ass jokes, I frankly don't watch anyone else's reviews anymore. None of them stack up to the quality that Aqualung consistently pumps out.

  • Ive played these games a million times before. I watch these reviews for nostalgias sake. It reminds me of being 10 years old again. That, and Aqualung has this addictive charm and style I cant quite define.

  • I still love this Mario 2 as well. Wart also made a small cameo in Legend of Zelda Link's Awakening for the GB.

  • The last stage always made me throw my controller at my NES. Great walkthrough, man.

  • Mario Bros. 2 of course it's not like the original but it's still a good game to play every once in a while.

The lost levels ah yes I played a couple of levels of that it was okay a lot harder than the Mario Brothers that we are use too.

  • nice review/walkthrough. you're right, this game doesn't deserve all the crap that people throw at it. it may not be the actual sequel, but it's a good game, and that's all that matters.

  • Great review/walkthrough!
