@001GenLee Pontiac had an agreement with Universal to have all of the original cars destroyed after the series was canceled. Universal then contracted with George Barris to have him build the official replicas, many of which have survived to this day. However I don't know if George designed or built the originals. I think Universal built them themselves. The cars were all donated to Universal by Pontiac following a cargo train accident that by law rendered the cars unsellable to the public.
@mk1505 George did not create KITT. He was brought in during the 3rd season as a consultant for upgrades for KITT. I don't know if it's from George getting up there in age, but he's been taking credit for vehicles he had nothing to do with for years. For example, The Back to the Future DeLorean, General Lee, Monkeymobile, Smokey and the Bandit ect.
@alphadelta227529 Thanks for the reply. I never said George created KITT. What I said was that George was contracted by Universal to create the "official replicas" of Kitt after the original cars were all destroyed as per Universal' s contract with Pontiac.
However you are right that George has been known to take credit for cars that I know for a fact he had nothing to do with creating. Most notably the General Lee which was created by Warner Bro.s own auto shop.
@mk1505 Sorry dude, I responded to the wrong person. But thanks for the kind reply. Yeah, he'll build a replica of a famous TV or movie car and take credit. Also on a side note to other viewers out there, yes the cars were ordered to be destroyed after production, but a few got back doored. In fact a good friend of mine has 1.
WOW.... I was 4 years old in 1985 when I first watched Knight Rider & I remember it like it was yesterday.... Seeing that car the first time, even then I said to my dad.... I WANT ONE OF THEM!
24 years later & I sadly still do not have one:'-|..... I will some day......
Hey man if you have more info about what happened to all the cars of the show and if you have pics of the original cars please contact me!
Send me message alright.........please I need it
