evil is the selfless act which only purpose is to cause harm to another. In this experiment they are being payed. They flick the switch for money, they switch it for selfish reasons, not evil reasons.
@millionairejh Yes, the true reason would be exposed sooner but it always is after the researchers gather the info/data they need. You would prove yourself to be one of the "less evil" variables if you stood up to him instead. It's a shame more ppl didn't do that & easy for others to say they would or wouldn't do certain things when they're watching the experiment on tv. -.-
yea all this proves is that ppl can be made to believe anything. if this show makes u think ur evil, they can find all the reason to make u think that. like ridiculous tests that seemingly prove ur evil but just proves that ppl are scared of authority
the milgram experiment shows that most people are sheep easily manipulated and coerced into doing things against their will i am glad i am not like that.
Authority figures are supposed to provide moral example, knowledge, guidance and leadership. They are not supposed to pressure people into doing things that they themselves don't want to do.
If you are capable of doing evil things with an authority figure, you better believe it you are capable of doing evil things without one.
Because let's face it, all it takes is a nudge, an inner voice instead of authority figure saying "do this or that, it's the right thing" and you're off to the evil side.
Most people say "it's not about being evil, but about obeying authority figures", but this is plainly WRONG. Same people are justifying Nazi scientists who were developing weapons to kill millions of people and Nazi officers doing the extermination of Jews.
Simply saying "they had to do it, they had orders" is so morally corrupt that I can't even begin to explain how wrong it is.
If an authority figure is capable of pressuring you into anything, you have no moral integrity as a person. Period.
And ryou have to consider how evil he person redoing the experiment is as well. i mean it was known that this experiment caused some of it's participents mental tramua the first time. And then this guy goes ahead and redoes it for science maybe causing people even more tramuatic mental experiences.
Participants of the 60's experiment stated they were glad to have participated. This goes to show that individually each one of us know what is evil but if instructed by an authority figure we change our concepts. I have seen people that know something is wrong but if their parents encourage them to do it, they'll do it. Anyway if you want to see the UK version of this experiment look for HORIZON HOW VIOLENT ARE YOU? here on youtube.
@oolong2 yeah but that could also show why this isn't very accurate. The people they would find would be kind of uneducated and i'm not trying to say that that makes them evil just that it isn't a good representation of the population.
@DrDorian89 Even if it wasn't the motivation for this experiment, how can you ultimately not elude to Nazi Germany ? There have been other mass atrocities and smaller with followers but NG was foremost in my mind watching the 50's & 2011 experiments. The potential & capacity for this to happen hasn't changed & I'm not surprised,at all.I believe there isn't much holding it all together.
*Sigh* Obvious sensationalism. This experiment doesn't show how "evil" a person is, it shows how compliant a person is to a perceived authority figure.
This experiment has become illegal ever since its first appliance with Milgram and 1963. Mostly because of the distress the participants went under. Obviously.. this wasn't even an actual experiment. The APA already made this illegal.
@spanishtrouble What I took from that was that it is illegal for PHYCOLOGISTS to do. I'm not sure but this man is just someone who wants to conduct the experiement on his own time. He doesn't have a doctor's degree anyone can take away or anything so i think it's legal for him to do it. I still think he's the evil one though for redoing the experiment even though he knows it caused people distress the first time.
@stmb1 It should be noted that in the first experiment, after the participants learned about the deception, virtually none regretted taking part in the experiment. And the participants were also evaluated by psychiatrist, who found no emotional aftereffects. Milgram said that the experiment caused no more distress than a college student facing and failing big exams.
I don't get it, if he said he wants out and they shock him again then thats breaking the law. The person who did it would go to jail. If they don't know its fake no one would do that.
The Milgram experiment has nothing to do with evil. All it shows is that people succumb to an authority (which is why the test leader is wearing a lab coat), even though their own morals might tell them it's wrong.
@AndreasPetersen although the test was originally designed to test a candidate obeying someone in authority, one could argue that the ultimate choice of flipping the switch is down to the 'evilness' of the candidate, regardless of what the instructor is telling them..
@UnknownXV Agreed, and even as I watch this, with the Guardian angel part I still think it can still be evil, even with others there. Not everyone is evil parsay, but the moment you basically pressure some one or basically to have a gun to your head, do you think you'd pull the trigger on a stranger? Or someone you know and/or love?
@AndreasPetersen how do you know? did you conduct a research or do you think you are better than DISCOVERY CHANNEL researchers? oh did you devote your life on telling DISCOVERY that it's wrong!!!
@darkreaper193 I know because I've studied psychology. You might also want to relax - pointing out possible errors in science is what makes science great.
@AndreasPetersen Totally agree with you, I studied the Milgram experiment few years ago and it has nothing to do with this. I don't know why discovery claimed that this is an ''Evil proof'' or something like that. Maybe they did to increase the audience, I don't know. But Milgram explained this experiment in the book called ''Obedience to authority'' and has NOTHING to do with this.
@mitkoogrozev I think Evil itself is very very rare, most people considered evil like murderers or rapist are only trying to accomplish their bodies desires or there mental desires. They don't want to do it, its in their nature. And that nature is formed by past experiences which is how your mind tries to defend itself, like a defense mechanism. Not to mention alot of Evil things people are capable of are no different from what we used to be back when we where cavemen, when humans where "untamed
It's so simple when you're not seeing that person to dehumanize them and do what you have been told by an authority figure you trust. I think most people in the experiment don't feel like they have to option to leave (I may well be wrong though) and that's why they're doing it?
very eerie
