evil is the selfless act which only purpose is to cause harm to another. In this experiment they are being payed. They flick the switch for money, they switch it for selfish reasons, not evil reasons.

You would prove yourself to be one of the "less evil" variables if you stood up to him instead. Authority figures are supposed to provide moral example, knowledge, guidance and leadership. They are not supposed to pressure people into doing things that they themselves don't want to do.

If you are capable of doing evil things with an authority figure, you better believe it you are capable of doing evil things without one.

Because let's face it, all it takes is a nudge, an inner voice instead of authority figure saying "do this or that, it's the right thing" and you're off to the evil side.

Most people say "it's not about being evil, but about obeying authority figures", but this is plainly WRONG. Same people are justifying Nazi scientists who were developing weapons to kill millions of people and Nazi officers doing the extermination of Jews.

Simply saying "they had to do it, they had orders" is so morally corrupt that I can't even begin to explain how wrong it is.

If an authority figure is capable of pressuring you into anything, you have no moral integrity as a person. Period.

Participants of the 60's experiment stated they were glad to have participated. This goes to show that individually each one of us know what is evil but if instructed by an authority figure we change our concepts. I have seen people that know something is wrong but if their parents encourage them to do it, they'll do it. There have been other mass atrocities and smaller with followers but NG was foremost in my mind watching the 50's & 2011 experiments. The potential & capacity for this to happen hasn't changed & I'm not surprised,at all.I believe there isn't much holding it all together.

This experiment has become illegal ever since its first appliance with Milgram and 1963. Mostly because of the distress the participants went under. Obviously.. this wasn't even an actual experiment. The APA already made this illegal.

@spanishtrouble What I took from that was that it is illegal for PHYCOLOGISTS to do. I'm not sure but this man is just someone who wants to conduct the experiement on his own time. He doesn't have a doctor's degree anyone can take away or anything so i think it's legal for him to do it. I still think he's the evil one though for redoing the experiment even though he knows it caused people distress the first time.

And the participants were also evaluated by psychiatrist, who found no emotional aftereffects. Milgram said that the experiment caused no more distress than a college student facing and failing big exams.

The Milgram experiment has nothing to do with evil. All it shows is that people succumb to an authority (which is why the test leader is wearing a lab coat), even though their own morals might tell them it's wrong.

@AndreasPetersen although the test was originally designed to test a candidate obeying someone in authority, one could argue that the ultimate choice of flipping the switch is down to the 'evilness' of the candidate, regardless of what the instructor is telling them..

@AndreasPetersen Totally agree with you, I studied the Milgram experiment few years ago and it has nothing to do with this. I don't know why discovery claimed that this is an ''Evil proof'' or something like that. Maybe they did to increase the audience, I don't know. But Milgram explained this experiment in the book called ''Obedience to authority'' and has NOTHING to do with this.
