The term "mezzo-soprano" are used for opera singers who usually sing in the alto range, and the term "alto" are used for choir singers, and mezzo-soprano in choir is usually called a "Soprano 2."
There's no such thing as a "true alto". Alto is simply the section of a choir filled with mezzos and contraltos. Most of these girls ae mezzos because true contraltos are rare, but the sing alto because alto is mezzo. At least, that's what my choir teacher says.
@angelzplay2000 alto does not mean you can't sing high. A bass can sing as high as a soprano. Alto just means your voice starts lower and sounds heavier
@highnote32 See but the problem is that true altos are hard to find. Much less classify within a singular voice type. So mezzo-sopranos end up singing the lower female part in the 4 voice set-up. And that just so happens to be alto.

(I hope that makes sense.)

@BlackLightning20101 I am a Countertenor and I sang Alto when I was in HS.

@highnote3 This proves my point exactly. If it was real alto (contralto) you wouldn't of been able to sing that part.

@BlackLightning20101
true altos are around babes the thing is people can't tell an Alto woman from a Mezzo
Mezzos sing low YES but altos sing extremely low
angelzplay2000 6 months ago
@angelzplay2000 Why can't people tell an alto from a mezzo? I don't get that.
Sure, mezzos can sing low but they sound comfortable singing in the 3rd octave. Some altos have the ability to give tenors a run for their money.
BlackLightning20101 6 months ago
@BlackLightning20101
cause mezzos tread our territory and many times wit ease
Yes the dramatic contraltos can sing tenor low notes and probably bass
I've sung a song wit extremely low notes
