the best way to train a dog not to break is to get a heeling stick or horse whip without the rope teach them to walk with you while they are on a leash and dont let them walk in front of you use the heeling stick on their shoulders and wave the stick in front of their face because they wont want to run into it and teach them heel by saying heel and tapping the dogs butt till they shift onto your heel after that you can break them of their breaking habit

after you get that down throw dummys or what ever while still having the leash on and if they break whack them with the stick they wont feel much just enough to get them to listen and tell them heel they will get used to the stick and listen and its way more effective they will respect the stick way more than sitting there frying them on a collar need any more questions leave me a message

shouldnt need to use the e collar very much if at all get a heeling stick or to go a cheaper route buy a horse whip with out the rope and have the dog on a leash and teach them to walk by your side and heel to you.

It's one of the hardest things to teach a dog, but when a dog holds it's great. To keep him from breaking I just put a shock collar on him and go out in the off season and during the season and sit in my layout blind or whatever and stand up and shoot towards a dummy that a buddy throws, if he runs after the shot I light him up and make him come back and send him on it, they figure it out pretty quick, but repetition is key.

Thanks for the advice! We just got a shock collar so I will have to give that a shot. Our yellow has been doing pretty good this year. She doesn't like jumping off the boat real well so she holds real good on the bow. Haven't had her in the field yet but I am sure she will need some training.

I am from Iowa. I live in Marion. I hunt in Johnson Co a little. It has been a wet year. Hopefully they get the crops out soon so you can get some hunting done.

thanks. good question. honestly we just have never spent the time to train a dog right. As long as the dog doesnt break before we shoot we have always called it good enough. we retired the dog in this video though and have a new yellow we are working with. Any suggestions on how to train the dog the right way?

Never let your dog go for a retrieve unless you give her the command to go. When training her to sit and stay throw plenty of retrieves over her and around her but make sure you retrieve some yourself or use another dog also. She just needs to learn that not every retrieve is for her and that she always needs to await your command. Generally they grasp this pretty quickly. Hope this helps.
