my grandad used to sing this song to me every night just so i would go to sleep ,when he past away my mother sang it to me for years untill she passed, now its my duty to carrie it on, though i am onli 18 .. i will always love this song
This is actually not the sweet little song most people think it is. Like most of the folk songs of the 60s it's a protest song. The key is the "It only cost 100 million dollars to build." It's a dig at the defense budget for the war against Viet Nam & the creation of weapons the manufacturers didn't have any idea how to control but were lethal & a threat to humanity (especially children).
my father used to play Peter, Paul, and Mary all the time when I was younger. I was singing most of their songs by the time I was in grade school. Thank God for my dad and introducing me to Peter Paul and Mary. My dad is still alive, but thanks to him I have a respect for good music! This is one of his favorite songs. Love you dad! Thanks you for being the best dad ever!!
THANK YOU for posting this. My daddy sang this to me regularly when I was a wee & tiny person - I have searched for the album for years, and never found it.
We all think about Daddy... how many of them are and have been in the world! Mine is not here anymore, but we still can all enjoy with this just remembering them! thanks!
my father passed away this past sunday. and i found this he was in a folk music band and he sang this song to me my whole life god i miss him soo much. please lord watch out for him. he was the greatest daddy a child could dream of..
@vtectuner1 My heart is with you...my Dad passed several years ago,,we used to love to get him to play "Under the Double Eagle" and "Mapleleaf Rag" on the piano..and "RedWing on `the guitar..Your dad is still watching over you..bank on it.
@vtectuner1 My thoughts are with you at this Holiday/Christmas season. And so is your Father! Let the tears make your love for him new and fresh again.

I think my son has a great teacher. She is using this song in the classroom for the children to listen to, interpret, and then draw the toy.

This song is full of memories for me. I thought the toy was a top, my brother thought it was a train. I just played it for my son. Sweet sadness.

What i don't understand is how they get such a great sound outside in the wind with just two puny looking dynamic mics?????
SuperBeanson 7 months ago
What I like best about this song is that you can hear in their voices that they are having fun singing this, that is what real music is all about.
tvkid9879 8 months ago
@tvkid9879 I was just going to comment on that. You can hear the laughter in their voices when they are singing. True music.

Concert at the Opera House, 1970. The reference to the "$100 million" is the cost of building it - big money in those days.

I learned this song from a Chad Mitchell Trio album of my father's, but PP&M do a really nice job too.
