Loved the vid, great footage! For a minute there at the beginning I thought mama bear was going to attempt a tight rope walk out to the food barrel, lol, give her credit though, she stuck with it til it was close enough to grab. It's amazing the sense of smell they have! Being out there in the bush she was able to smell food in a tightly closed bin. In "86 I came between a sow & her cub and ended up with a severe arm injury & cuts to my head and back, Thank God my friends heard me& chased her off
This just reinforced my theory--that the barrels keep the smells sealed in. If they can't smell the food, they ignore the barrel. On my last trip, I used a bike cable lock to secure my barrel to a tree--just to be sure no bears would haul it away during the night. I think I will forego hanging from now on.
This must have been the same black bear and cubs that came to our camp in mid August. Luckily we scared them off before they did any mischief and we moved the next day. We heard from other campers in the area that these bears had been coming into camps up and down the sites on Knife Lake.
One note on the video is that it would have been kind of funny to see it get sling-shotted some how by the rope!

Thats why you don't tie your food pack next to a tree, but very interesting video!
