i've never tried a gateway so I can't say about that but never buy the aspire series, i'v had 3 different acer aspires and they all broke with very light use.

netbooks aren't as powerful and normally have pretty darn small screens (9-13inches) notebooks are more powerful and normally have larger screens (15-22inches) so notebooks are better all-around were netbooks are better for on the go, word documents and light web browsing.
