Woah, they're seriously teaching people to block a mea geri with a gedan barai? I've seen a few broken arms because of that. You're better off just getting out of the way of a kick rather than trying to meet force with force and block it. Just a thought from someone who has learned the hard way...

Ok I have the first vol. of the series. I've watched it and I like it. I wouldn't go to say that a person will learn from this alone but it's next best thing if your stuck that way somehow. I'll be using it along my instruction and to insure I keep my techniques down and remember the key points. The teacher does good explaining the exact components of the teachnique. My fav. was the stance actually. So as far as dvds go, this is a good buy if you want some thing to help study your shotokan

Who decides that? The JKA has gone through several splits because of internal politics. The WTKF which Richard heads is just one of those splinter groups, but founded by some of the top names in JKA Shotokan karate.
Thats a pretty ridiculous comment. Richard Amos is one of the tiny handful of Westerners who completed the instructors course at the JKA hombu, bashing it out daily with the likes of Asai, Kagawa, Isaka, Abe, Kawaguch sensei etc. ... the very top of Shotokan Karate.
If you saw him in person (I have) you wouldn´t make such a silly comment.
I don´t know what list you are looking at, but you are definitely wrong. I was not there at the time (as a student in the hombu dojo, not in the instructors class, lol), and I met him as well as all the world-famous instructors at the time. He was teaching and HAD graduated from the instructors class (the first westerner ever, I understand).
Look, this is nothing to argue. Whatever source you found, it is wrong.
@Derukugi2 You are right, there is nothing to argue. I went to the JKA home page, went through the menu until I got to the list of those who have graduated from the instructor program and, lo and behold, he isn't on it. Believe what you like, he is your hero not mine. BTW, I trained with the JKA in Japan as a Marine and have been involved since 1964. Your hero doesn't look Nannadan material to me, but, what would I know, only been training for 46 years give or take a few days.
You are probably unaware of JKA politics and the split in the 90`s.
If you look up JKA at wiki, you find this. "The list at the JKA's website, which includes most members who left or were expelled, may also be incomplete... during the troubled period between 1990 and 1999 each JKA faction held its own instructors' course."
Amos graduated in 1994, I believe. I should have mentioned that at the time there were two hombu dojos (Takanawa and Ebisu), but I assumed everyone knew that.
@Derukugi2 And just why would I be unaware of the split and the politics? There were not two hombu dojos, there was one and a dojo headed by Asai. If Amos attended the Asai school, he is not a JKA graduate. The original JKA won the law suit and Asai was forbidden to use the name ever again. Your man's name is not (that would be NOT) on the list.
He practised in Ebisu before the split and went through the instructors course during and after the split. And at the time there TWO hombu dojos -- they were both called that, and the court case was raging.
In retroactively re-writing history, you are dissing some of the greatest instructors at the time (and today)... Yahara, Abe, Kagawa, etc etc.
Fact is, Amos did graduate the course, and if the current JKA leaves out names from the other faction, that is pure politics.
@Derukugi2 You assume a lot. You assume a name and a so called rank to be a legitimate source of karate. Well, let a long term Shotokan practitioner set you straight. Shotokan karate is incomplete as a martial art and sports oriented. In terms of original karate, it misses the mark badly. Japanese elitists have removed numerous elements of karate in favor of their way. They are arrogant, silly and stupid. Real karate is Okinawan, period and historically factual.
@Derukugi2 Do yourself a favor. Instead of calling me names, research Okinawan karate. Find out why they developed it, how they practiced it and how kusho played a vital role. Understand yakusoku kumite as regards kata and kata as regards combative bunkai. Get on an actual combative level and you will see. I spent a long time in Shotokan and am registered with the JKA as a yudansha. I would not go back to it for anything. There is a reason and THEY GAVE IT.
LOL, you have now gone from dissing Richard Amos, to dissing some of the most famous instructors of Shotokan, to dissing all of Shotokan.
If you think all of Shotokan is useless, why did you start out making smartass comments about Amos´ 7th dan, based on your expert opinion as yudansha, LOL!
Do yourself a favour and stop putting more egg on your face by continuing this.
@Derukugi2 Well, how about this? Nishiyama was my last teacher. Does LOL make me wrong? Or, is it a nervous response to the prospect that I may be right? Doesn't actually matter, you and yours are caught up in rank, titles, lords, earles and dukes so a nannadan must be right down the old pike. Expert? Decades with Nishiyama, Okazaki, Yaguchi, Koyama, Ochi, Oichi, Kawasoe, Takashina etc. You tell me? You will never know, you are blinded by the hype, the egg is sadly yours. Osu and Ijo.
@IEKUKATAKA Nishiyama left Japan then his karate did not get better ,just he was older and every one had to say oss oss, look the people trained with him all moving like an old man ,Nishiyama could not make them to understand they should not copy his body .
@Red171 Richard Amos is not a 7th dan ,he is 6th dan from one of the JKA's instructor called Abe (keigo)sensei ..however he has a good standard .you coming up here talking crap, move your back side do a bit of work not just bal baling

i think if done superficially then shotokan won't work, but when done with the true essence of karatedo then it can be effective cause this does not restrict you to sparring it allows you to so anything to defeat your opponent. i practice shotokan karate and fought people from different arts and have been very successful. the only thing that i would admit is that other styles can often handle being hit very hard better.
Sounds like your Sensei was over dependent on the constant training to understand the good fundamentals that other teachers try to get their students to understand.
