In that universe, those "shorten your lifespan" jutsu always kick the most ass, and in that series, shortening your lifespan doesn't seem to count for anything significant. So, basicly, every time Pain is 100% and ready for battle, he's got a nuke-level-shockwave on standby. I know Sage Mode is much tougher than normal flesh, but I'm not so sure that it can block a shockwave THAT powerful without an ass-pull thrown in somewhere.
