I am so glad I found your video. Thnaks so much. I would appreciate it if you can tell me what type and size thread is best used for this particular design???
@queenbahamamama1 I used embroidery thread, pulling out just one strand at a time. This can also be done with very thin wire (32 GA), or other kinds of threads if you can't find embroidery thread.
Hey Camille, I have to say I love your videos. I've been making jewelry for only a few months now, and I've found your videos completely awesome for instructions! I've made the tree-of-life pendant a few times now, and have loved every single one of them. I found some amazing iridescent leaf-shaped beads (like the ones found in the Beaded Grapes tutorial) and I threw a few of those into the most recent pendant I've made, loved the results!! Can't wait to see what other creations you'll teach us!
I use the same thickness for both the coil and the wire inside, and I make the coil so that it's not snug against the inner wire. That way you can pretty much use as many colors as you want 'cause there's more room to build up layers before the string pops off. But I used this tutorial to learn it :)
THANK YOU...I have been looking for a tutorial on this...I was actually acble to do three colors...and green floral wire in 22 gauge and i think 26 gauge ( I just saw the #26 on my package)and that was the extremely thin wire...but it is very sturdy...just another cool pair of arings...DIY style
Have a great day and thanks for making the video ;D
@purplelove566 My guess is that it would work. I use copper because it is less expensive and once you finish the wrapping you won't really be able to see a lot of the larger wire. You will be able to see the thinner one in the coil.
Hi Camille, very nice video!! I had a question, while pulling the 24 guage wrapped wire..is there a way such that we can uniformly do it? I tend to pull too much at some portions, thereby it comes out non-uniform. Thanks in advance!!
@86lathasridharan I tried some different thing and my best suggestion is to make a larger coil than you need, pull with even tension from the ends, and hopefully you'll have a large enough section of it turn out evenly which you can use. Best of luck!
@peg0806 The skeins I used are about 8.75 yards long, but how long you'll need the thread to be really depends on 1) how big you are making the pendant and 2) how many times you plan to wrap the thread around. I used these skeins because they are fairly inexpensive and I also had a lot of them around that I inherited from my grandmother. They were more than long enough.
On this tutorial can one use cross stitching floss? Or does it have to be a certain kind of thread? I have a bunch of floss that's not being used and thought this would be a great use for it. Thanks ahead of time.
Just what i need a video on threaded earring. I watch your video, but i would like to know how do u add a second or thrid color at the dottom of the earring. Help!!! I love the threaded earring
OMG! I have purchased tons of these earrings just because I love them soooooo much. now, I will be attempting to make them myself. Thanks so much for sharing you are the only one I have found who is willing to share their knowledge for free! Thanks a ton!
God Bless You Camille! These are going to be my Xmas gifts! I am soo excited to start making them and saving some money! Thanks so much....Happy Holidays~
@Blackprincess89 To make earrings, make sure to make the same pendant in a size you think is appropriate for earrings, then make 2 of them as much alike as you can. You can buy ear wires on-line or in a local craft store, or if you do wire-wrapping, you can make your own. Attach the "pendants" to the ear wires and voila-- earrings. Hope that helps!
@cherrycake2 I haven't tried, but my concern is if you use a wire which is too small, it will become bent out of shape when you are winding the thread around it from the tension. When I was looking for the wire for the outer hoop, instead of making full pendants with each, I tested the flexibility of the wire by bending it with my fingers to get an idea of how pliable it was. I needed something which would hold up to the pressure I was going to put it under.
Hi, i would like to try this out, but what if I can't make the second one the same as the first one? is there a way to know how to do it so it will look the same??
@p0interz Practice. ;) Even when I've seen these for sale "professionally" they aren't a 100% exact match, just pretty close. The more you make, the more consistent they will be and the better your chances of making 2 that look almost identical. Good luck!
@happyfikelpikel Embroidery floss. DMC is a big brand for it, but I also have some by J. & P. Coats, Coats & Clark, and Lily Craft. It comes in hundreds of colors.
That is really cool. Now I finally have a reason to use my Coiling Gizmo!
A couple notes: The safety-pin-like thingy is called a stitch holder; in the craft store it would probably be with the knitting needles and other supplies. The embroidery floss you're using is, I think, rayon; it's shinier and more slippery than regular floss, which is cotton. It's also more fragile, so you're right about not pulling too tight - besides changing the shape of the pendant, it might break the thread.
I love your videos. You explain the techniques very clearly and make them easy to follow. I am a metalsmith and there are a few of your ideas that I pan to use and adapt to my methods of working (I solder) so Thanks for the great ideas.
I used "Wild Wire" brand in the video, from Michaels. Not all stores out here carry the brand, and it isn't always in the jewelry section. You can always try Rio Grande online, but they don't carry all the colors.
A couple of ways that I can think of - you'll have to experiment. First, don't use one piece of thread all the way around. Start and stop, leaving some "breathing room." Another thing to try is when you're counting to the middle of the coils to start wrapping, make your first wrap less than half way. That way, as you keep wrapping, they'll never overlap. I'll post some photos of this on Twitter so you can see what I mean.
Thank you for sharing this craft! People are so stingy with the technique, I can't stand it! Thank you a million times 5 STARS and I'm subscribing. :)
Thank you so very, VERY much for sharing this. All I could find online were tutorials that cost money, and sadly I don't have the funds to buy them. So thank you from the bottom of my crafty heart for sharing this for free.
I know some people are sending me video repsonses - youtube didn't even allow mine! I don't know what's going on. Sorry if your video response doesn't get through. It's out of my control.
can you make another video for this on how to clean it up at the end like putting a bead on it how to fix the string i saw the one pendant you have at the beginning and it was cleaner with a bead on it
I don't have plans to make another video on these at this time, but I'm thinking of ways to answer your questions and will let you know when I've got something either on my Twitter or my blog. Maybe someone out there has been making a lot and has some suggestions?
Hey. Just wanted to let you know about Sandi and her blog, Silver and Crystals and Beads, Oh My! She's got some great tips on the string-art pendants. No URLs in comments on YouTube, but search for her!
Thank you so much. I have been making necklaces that call for a pendant but didn't know how to make one. This is so clear and looks like something I can do.
I have just been making a knot in the middle of the design if my color runs out and letting the on-going wrapping hold the ends down. Not the cleanest look, I'll admit. I've seen one blogger who has been doing some nice work using machine embroidery thread. One benefit I can see with using a spool thread is that you won't need to knot in the middle if your pendant is too large for one length of the skein floss. The downside is it costs slightly more. I've never used it, so can't comment more.
I haven't done many different designs, but I'll post some pictures of other things I've tried on my Twitter site - @CamilleSharon - over the next few days.

i just have a question. when you get to the end of your string in the same color where are you making your knots?
hot419fem 2 years ago
I have just been making a knot in the middle of the design if my color runs out and letting the on-going wrapping hold the ends down. Not the cleanest look, I'll admit. I've seen one blogger who has been doing some nice work using machine embroidery thread. One benefit I can see with using a spool thread is that you won't need to knot in the middle if your pendant is too large for one length of the skein floss. The downside is it costs slightly more. I've never used it, so can't comment more.
