  • What Chords are you playing around 2:20?

  • Do you offer personal lessons?

  • Great lesson, gained a lot from this!

  • great job!

  • you really should do a tutorial on how to make in depth wovels with fm8 =)

  • 3:40 - 3:46 you sould make that into a sound.. it sounded pretty funky

  • @Urbanearmusic - dude, just adjust the envelope and you have then made that sound yourself.... it's not that difficult, trust me!

  • This is a very silly question, and myabe my FM8 isnt working for some reason but...1:38...how did you do that? I can't get my oscillators to do that. Is there a button you have to press?

    Cheers

  • @ChaX424 - turning on the feedback is simply clicking down the mouse, holding the button down and dragging up. No additional keystrokes required.

  • @thepluginguru boy do I feel like an idiot. thanks mate! let the FM8ing begin!

  • hey @thePluginGuru, at @4:33 i was wondering something.. when you show the sine looping effect in the dropdown box, how come on my fm8 it just says "init" repeatedly?? I cant see any of these effect choices that you have (and yes i have a purchased version, not cracked) :(

  • @delucey - I am NOT official NI Tech Support - but my guess is that you're missing the standard template files that were installed when you first put FM8 on your computer. Simplest solution would be to do a re-install, if possible... hope you get things working - these default templates are very useful.

  • how did you tune your sounds, the bell in particular, it has a very dark character, (I downloaded the free pack), but what I want to know how to tune sounds like that!

  • @skateman247 - The ratio in simple terms is the transpose for that particular operator - however, in FM synthesis, this relationship creates additional overtones. Certain ratio settings make the harmonics that we relate to as "bell" type tones. Set one operator at 1.00 and another at 16.00 and you'll be in bell-tone nirvana.... :D

  • hey.. thank you man... i appreciate your effort in helping :)

  • Brilliant really helpful, thanks!

  • I want to thank you personally, man. The manual on this synth kinda sucks about explaining how to program it. Kudos to you for your generosity in making this video.

  • @graphiteplacenta - That's why I do what I do.... Glad to help and thanks for the kind words!

  • I love this video! I've gone quite deep into FM8 lately but I feel there's still so much to learn and I would love to see a follow-up to this video! Thank you so much, cheers!!!

  • Please make another tutorial video on FM8. I know my way around the app but, I'm sure I'm just scratching the surface.

    LOVE the Absynth vids BTW

  • Thanks for opening up my eyes. I will study these vids and get cracking on some serious Dub Step and Pop/ Electronica!

  • Awesome tutorial. Feel like I get FM8 a lot more now!!

  • buy hhow can i record that sounds for create music ? what sofwarre can i use ?

  • @yoeltape A RTAS (real time audio station)....you can use FL Studio, Cubase...

  • @Metallicafanfrom93 actually you're talking about a DAW.. but yeah..

  • Man You Really know about this Plugin

  • Wow! Thanks this is very very helpful! Your the man!

This also reminds me of Sytrus.

  • @Brinemusic Because all fm synthesizers works the same!

  • This is awesome, but all I want is your track!! The track that plays a few times throughout the vid... I love it! Any way I can get an mp3 or something?

  • @fstball4110 - Dude - I posted this just now (March 11, 2011) on the PlugInGuru Soundcloud page. So go to soundcloud [dot] ]c.o.m[ and search for PlugInGuru. It's called Blue Shoe Shuffle and is in the FM8 set. You can also find it on my pluginguru [dot] ]c.o.m[ site on the FM8 page, it's there for you to download.

Glad you like - I want to make an album later this year where I work some of these demo tracks up to full-blown tracks.

  • love it, still not understanding this whole tool tho...

  • Great job! I liked it very much, thanks!!!

  • Nice review, can't wait to to get this. Just ordered and I'm waiting for it. Wonderful tutorial as well.

  • Cheers for this really useful for making more 80s is sounding synth patches.

  • Learned a great deal from this. Didn't realise it was such a great sounding, powerful synth.

  • excelent tutorial. tx a lot !!!

  • Nice Job Uncle John :]

I remembered you did this so i was like I should watch it :'3

  • really really good tutorial, made me understand so much better what I'm doing

  • @Blowjegek - Thanks ! That's why I do these. I believe everybody should have and know what the tools can do. That way we all create our own music but with more of your personality infused since you know what you're doing. I think I'm part Borg. : >

  • awesome video! do you have any more illustrating how to initialize a rhodes patch or an organ sound?

  • thank you very much, that was very helpful!

great job on a fantastic tutorial.

  • You can copy the Envelope settings from one to another on the envelope edit page. But no, there isn't a copy one entire Operator to another, unfortunately.

I hope they bring out FM9 someday !!

  • Very Good. Thanks for the insights. T9

  • This video was very helpful. Feel free to make 3rd video with the bits that got chopped coz I'm sure they're useful too.

This has given me inspiration to try different things with Fm8 because I was growing dissapointed with the factory lib: there seemed to be too many slow-attack pads, and not enough interesting polysynths.

I am looking to make synths like:

Ryan Leslie feat. Cassie - Addiction (youtube: 1UZuEmz7aHk )

Everything Everyday Everywhere - Ryan Leslie ( youtube: QKnSrEKydGQ ) thx!

  • nice tutorial. This helped a lot with a university project.

  • Great review man. Your tips helped a lot. Your work is greatly appreciated. : )

  • Great tutorial!

Could you explain what "ratio" exactly does in FM8?

  • Pitch, the higher it is on the modulator the "brighter" your sound becomes. Also the pitch changes. It's FM, so you can expect things to be really unpredictable. Which is cool if you ask me.

Try detuning two OPs or OSCs or whatever you want to call it in the ratio bar and boom, you get a wobble but with different depth than if you'd use the detune in the Master Edit Mode/Tab on the left.

    HMM!? Love fm, shit.

  • awesome awesome AWESOME review !

  • very nice review! helped me a lot thanx!

  • I can't manage to make feedback on the operators. I've been double clicking and draging in all sorts of kombinations. I'm using demo version.

  • Robbinsffxi, Only Operators A - F can provide feedback. So make sure you are doing a single-click in the box DIRECTLY above one of those (A - F) operators. Drag up and down and you'll get the feedback turned on.

  • i always come back to this synth!!

    very useful info mate...thanks u-)

  • I stand corrected. Now that I have watched this a second time the excerpts of background music in Part 2 is equally as satisfactory. Nice.

  • I found this tutorial as I am considering NI's FM8. As primarily a guitar player my technical intuition is grossly lacking. You have a way of making the complicated understandable, are detailed but not overly complex, and have a positive and pleasant voice. I suggest you consider making tutorial DVDs. I look forward to checking out your other tutorials and will likely purchase your product after acquiring FM8, especially with the background stuff I heard in Part 1! I am now on your e-mail list.

  • great job !!!

  • MC - yes, I'm using Screenflow to capture the raw desktop and iSight video. I record the audio externally to a Korg MR-1000 and then import and place it back into screenflow. Final editing done in Final Cut :D

  • Incredibly well done. Are you using Screenflow to record these tutorials?

  • This is really informative. I'd love to see more FM8 stuff done by you.

  • Thanks Plugin Guru :D

  • Yes, this rocks. Niiiiiice!

  • You are great mister thepluginguru !

  • thank you very much

  • Mate! this is awsome

Cheers for posting this, Extremely useful!!

  • Very easy to follow explanation. I've posted this review on switchedonsynthesizer.blogspot . com

  • Thanks, Thalassa!
