Im quickly getting over both sides of the debate. Its a little hard to take sides when after an hour and a half of heated intellectual debate and insulting the two of them part ways to flog books. It kind of takes away the seriousness of the debate when you realise the whole reason of it was to promote a book signing. I mean both these guys have money and their books are well known, why cant they just meet and debate a serious topic without selling anything?
I've always been a big fan of Hitch. Seriously... I really admire the man a great deal and I usually find myself in agreement with most of his viewpoints.
But I don't think it's right for us to be so dismissive of Galloway's comments. I feel that he did indeed make some very good points. I didn't appreciate his ad hominem attacks against Hitch, but I do agree with many of his observations about the true nature of the Iraq war.

I've always been a fan of Christopher Hitchens but I never knew just how arrogant and self-righteous he could be. I'm surprised and very disappointed.
I think you didn't know him all that well. He was brilliant, extremely knowledgeable, singularly eloquent but also often quite obnoxious, insulting and not afraid to use his intellect and ability to construct a convincing narrative to cherrypick the truth and even misrepresent his opponents. Despite that, I am a big fan. He is mostly right about most things and has a style and wit you just have to admire :)

It is not a political rally, it is a debate and it seemed to become a we-can-shout-louder-than-you competition between factions in the audience. It may not have been majority campus students but, as hosts, the buck stops with them.

Christopher Hitchens was a rare treasure, the likes of which we may not get to see again for several lifetimes. His only failing was his ties to communism. If it wasn't for that, he'd be a secular saint.
Galloway supporters: that the Iraq War has been "adjudged" is an unconvincing argument to end on, and tells you all you need to know about Galloway's escapism and yourselves. Hitchens is right to denounce Blair's and Bush's fear campaign (if we call it that) because though it handicaps his position, it fortifies the integrity of his argument. I don't understand why people use the changing of one's mind as an argument against one's position. A person who maintains his position regardless of the introduction of new evidence is far more untrustworthy than the person who constantly re-evaluates, reconsiders, and then forms a position based on the best evidence. Hitchins really irritated me in this debate and nearer the end I almost couldn't listen to him as he was so totally wrong. Its was palatable. Im quickly getting over both sides of the debate. Its a little hard to take sides when after an hour and a half of heated intellectual debate and insulting the two of them part ways to flog books. It kind of takes away the seriousness of the debate when you realise the whole reason of it was to promote a book signing. I mean both these guys have money and their books are well known, why cant they just meet and debate a serious topic without selling anything?

I've always been a big fan of Hitch. Seriously... I really admire the man a great deal and I usually find myself in agreement with most of his viewpoints.
But I don't think it's right for us to be so dismissive of Galloway's comments. I feel that he did indeed make some very good points. I didn't appreciate his ad hominem attacks against Hitch, but I do agree with many of his observations about the true nature of the Iraq war.

A person who maintains his position regardless of the introduction of new evidence is far more untrustworthy than the person who constantly re-evaluates, reconsiders, and then forms a position based on the best evidence. Hitchins really irritated me in this debate and nearer the end I almost couldn't listen to him as he was so totally wrong. Its was palatable. I'll respect what other people believe if they believe it in the privacy of their own mind- when you say that Hitchens is intellectually mediocre, that "chimps" are a "falsely claimed ancestry" and pulled your whole '10th graders are more intellectually stimulating than your typical atheist' remark, there's absolutely zero chance of me respecting your beliefs and attitude.

Hitchens is an opportunist who flips flopped on principles (not just issues) for personal interest & benefits. He became a gun for hire! to do so he had to have an elastic conscience the intellectual dishonesty to support his moral contradictions. That is a major problem.
As for Galloway, even if you disagree with him, he has been consistent on his principles and applied them to the issues of the day. Was against Sadam when he gassed Kurds but with Iraq when foreigners attacked it.

No intellectual apart from Chomsky has asserted so much with evidence as Christopher Hitchens has, to those who say his a war monger or throw callous remarks towards him show a great ignorance on the work he has done during his long and fulfilled lifetime. He has been from Iraq to Nicaragua and back and seen and written about it all first hand. So don't sit there telling us, those who know best that he is this or that and that George Galloway knows more than him.

I have oft respected Hitchens' intellect, however.....interesting, that @3:35 he makes points of international law, by which, in fact clearly implicate and condemn both U.S.A. and Britain among other terrorist states (including Iraq). He seems to blatantly supports a rather gross hypocrisy. Which suggests to me that he is racist and highly ignorant,and a propagandist.
