I first heard this version of "Clancy" in Vietnam in 1970. One of the guys had the Carpenters first album. It was originally called "Offering" but by the time i got home it was in stores under the name "Ticket To Ride" with totally different cover art but the same song line up as I remember. Personally I like like both versions but must admit the Buffalo Springfield original has more depth and soul.
I think this arCarpenters arangement of this song very sensitive more than Buffalo Springfield sounds.
The keyboard is solid attack and solid drum beats beauty heartbroken harmony with the clear ensemble and musical making. And nowadays Karen can't even sing.
I do think that this is excellent, especially Karen's back up vocals, but I understand the criticisms of it: they were far too young and naive personally to understand fully the message of this song. Also, their obsession with perfectionism did hurt them when they covered folk or country songs. Those genres work better, I think, when the performances are a little "rough."
I still would not use the term "butcher," though, as that indicates lack of musical ability, and these two had a ton of it.
This is such a personal, introspective Neil song...how anyone could turn that into a pop number is beyond me. I'm going to try to forget that I saw this.
Thanks. I never realized this was a Spiringfield song. Never heard any other version other than the Carpenters till today. I like this except for the intro, "sINNNNNG", that was bad juju. But for a change, Richard sings, and his piano at the end is excellent. I did always like this song.
Nobody seems to have mentioned this, but this is actually a Neil Young song. It was recorded with Buffalo Springfield without Neil singing it because they felt his voice was too shakey. A version of this song is available with Neil singing it and he does a great job of matching the feel of what it should sound like so that it fits the lyrics.
I was first turned on to the Carpenters with their second album, Close To You; so when I realized there was an earlier album, I went searching in the bargain bins at the music Store. I found this album on a four track tape; about the only one I ever saw; fortunately it woud play on my state of the art 8track player, only just two tracks, though. At the time[1971] I think Lee Michaels, the Rock Keyboardist was very popular, but I thought Richard was as good or better. Thanks again, Florcha34
Edgey bad-asses! Love KC's drumming on the early stuff. Has some moments where I think they borrowed from Another Song (not an other song, but their own song "Another Song") Compare Another Song's second and third parts where they go into the instrumental sections. Every time I hear the lesser known stuff I love them even more.
Here's another song by the Carpenters, I never heard of. Was this ever released? I love getting on You Tube, and finding all these Carpenter songs I never heard of. Sounds like Richard was lead in a lot of these very early songs. That is funny, them cussing. Thanks for posting.
In my opinion, their first two albums were their best. There was a sense of urgency and focus in the vocals, and a more organic feel to the arrangements, compared to the occasionally over-lushness of the later years. Karen's drums was the hook for me in this number. And they said "damn"!
Richard Carpenter is acclaimed as an arranger and song writer, but this excellent cover of the Buffalo Springfield song demonstrates his vocal ability.
Thank you!
Most Carpenters songs were written by Burt Bacharach & other people. After the first albums, Richard became an addict, and soon Karen died of anorexia. Her death did draw attention to that problem though.
thanks Leah!, I just recomended Florcha34 to put TURN AWAY on her channel. and I told her that a friend of mine from your country, hate carpenters but he LOVES at same time "turn away" (you know..turn away is in the same "offering" album that "nowadays...") Thanks again Leah.
Hey! I've never heard this Carpenter's song. Thanks for sharing it, and for the pictures as well. Great job of varying the way each photo is presented.
Thank you very much!! Make me happy that you have liked it!! Actually I am charmed with all his songs!! But there are several and for example this one that is very pretty and it was not available here in youtube.

Sorry, but I think they butchered a great song.
It's too sanitized, the rhythm is weird, strings and horns are overdone and I hate the electric piano. Intro is wretched.
I guess if you like great songs turned into elevator music this is great, but not me.

it's a decent version, but it lacks the despair of the other which is just so haunting

This must be one of the oddest choices for a cover the Carpenters could have chosen, but it's pretty good.
