I have never seen anything like this and am nonetheless impressed. I can see the art in these pieces and am simply amazed by the work that goes into them.
My initial reaction was that the doll's movements are disturbingly life-like. Thinking on it a little more, though, the machine isn't bolted to the doll. Instead, it's actually padded, more like a cradle than anything else. Does the machine animate the doll, or does it react to an infant's movements? Interesting piece.
From a purely mechanical standpoint, I envy the gears. My own tools and techniques are... limited.
I was struck by how the machine sounds like a heartbeat to me - the fast heartbeat of a small body, but amplified by a machine that is supporting it, like a machine would support the body of an infant in a hospital - listening to the thing that keeps us tethered to this world.
This reminds me of a very sad Macy's day balloon. I love how in this piece and 23 scraps of paper the main objects of the sculpture are seem to be almost separated from the rest of the mechanism. But with out the mechanism they are no longer transformed and lose the specialness that they obtain by being connected to the machine.
Thanks for your thoughts. Yes, the separation with rods and the quiet space between the subject of both pieces felt important. In the way way back of my mind I was referencing what feels like heaven and earth with both works.
